Cost of a new Cam belt

My Benimar mileo 202 built on a fiat Ducati 2.3 diesel is in for a new cam belt. I’m guessing the belt cost is about £400. The garage is suggesting it’s a whole days job. Does that sound right??? Pushing the price to over £1000???

If you give the location you are in someone in the area may be able to recommend a less expensive workshop that can do this .

Too much!

It will take them most of the day though, all sorts needs removing to do the job. Belt kit £80 to £150.

A Fiat belt, pump and parts is over £386. And pattern parts can be a lot less. What are they fitting???

Thanks for the replies. We are in south Oxfordshire. I think I need to ask some more questions of them tomorrow….i hate garages!

I don’t think that the £1,000 pound costing is far off if they are using fiat parts and doing the water pump. I paid about £900 a couple of years ago for that job

The difference is someone who knows what they are doing and someone who doesn't.
Hands up those that think Fiat parts come from Fiat. :rollingeyes:

Last June we had the cam belt/water pump changed on our Peugeot Boxer van, also passed it's MOT without any advisories. :Grin:
Total £789.55

We had cam belt, tensioners, etc. and MoT done in January. All told, it was approx £800 incl VAT at an independent local garage.

Similar ours is in right now similar price + £200 for a full service, which isn't that bad when you consider the price of the oil alone.
We were quoted a smidge above £1k for the entire job which seemed fair given the prices and fact with all the work I'm having them do it's a near 2 day job. £800 if I just wanted the belts, tensioners and water pump doing.

So total bill presented this morning for all the stuff needed (MOT, Wipers, Cam belt + waterpump + various bulbs for the mot, and a full service was £970). They actually quoted me £1030 for the job prior, but it apparently took them less time so they billed less.

Can't argue, just done a 15 mile run back to the storage site we use, and all ran well.

Out in van for second trip of 2025 in a couple of weeks.

My input is get as much info as you can, because we asked for a price for a new cambelt, water pump and MOT, the price came back at £700, I thought great and gave them the job. On the morning of the job (about 10:00) they phoned me to say it had passed the MOT but the cambelt kit didn't come with the water pump kit and if you want the water pump fitting it'll be £80 for the kit and 4 hours labour. I'd been told by many people in the know that a new cambelt can put alot of strain on an old water pump, so I said go ahead and do it, total cost £1040, this is why I say get it all clear when arranging.

4 hours to change the pump, they already had the belt off so ½hr would be generous to stick on a new pump.
Plus, they already included fitting the pump in the original price so the cost of the actual pump should be deducted...they've charged you for it twice.
Even if it was a relatives garage they wouldn't get anymore business from me.

Your right but I've been told they had it all or nearly all back together when someone suggested that the customer wanted the pump doing too.

Being honest that wasn't far off what the local place initially quoted me, but I did get a full service with that too, the mot and a few bulbs + a new set of wiper blades, as one was back.

I did make sure they included the water pump though. I see this more that they ordered the wrong kit, which is possible if you didn't supply the VIN when booking.

Place I used had at least 3 trucks in (full artic truck cabs), and 2 other motorhomes the same day, all the motorhomes were in for same work near enough.

INA belt,rollers and pump cost me under £100 labour quote £280 which is about right 41/2 hrs.Garages make a big thing about how technical this job is ...it is not I've done more cam belts on many many different makes and models with no manuals or vehicle specific knowledge,than I can remember.

You are right. It is just time consuming having to remove all the bits in the way, and pressing out the fuel pump from the water pump housing.

I think I spent about £180ish on the continental kit and the two auxiliary belts. I did take two days to do the job but that was mainly due to me painting the bracket the coolant tank sit on.
