The most recognised of all tinned pies, the classic Fray Bentos Steak & Kidney Pie was originally launched in 1961. This great value option contains delicious pieces of steak and kidney, covered in tasty beef gravy and topped with puff pastry.

Fray Bentos Steak & Kidney Pies are perfect if you are shopping on a budget and also if you don’t have the time to make your own pies. They take about 30 minutes to cook and can easily feed four people.

Perfect for warming yourself up on those cold winter nights

Well, even the dodgiest estate agent in the country would baulk at that description

Well, they got the first bit right, anyway

As a temporary warming pan, perhaps

On our first trip abroad sometime around 1965 with my parents, towing a trailer tent my father made from a kit, my mother took tinned butter with us. I didn't think this was still available but a quick Google suggests it is. The value of tinned butter is it doesn't need to be stored in a 'fridge, until you open it of course. Though we didn't have even so much as a coolbox on our trip so I remember you could have spread the butter with a brush when we got to Yugoslavia.

Shepton Mallet?
That was in he stone age!

Yeah, serious stuff, that place was.

"Top" is at the bottom of the page to cater for upside down antipodeans.
That's where the military gallows was situated.

The remaining military nick is in Colchester, but the glasshouse was one of the buildings (with a glass roof) that made up the old nick in Aldershot.
Ah ha! Thanks for that. My dad always referred to the correction centre in Colchester as the Glasshouse. Is it now a generic name for a military nick?

Our first caravan adventure was to Switzerland where we stayed on a site called The Lazy Rancho ( it's still going). Along side us pulled up this little Motorhome and out spilled a couple from NZ who fell on us with glee when they heard us talking English. We sat one evening swapping stories ( as you do) when they confessed they had stocked up on Frey Bentos pies at the start of their odessy, only to discover they hadn't got an oven! However, with all the cunning of a true antipodean, they opened the tin, carefully prized the top off the pie, emptied the filling into a saucepan and grilled the pastry. Have a little chuckle everytime I see those pies! ;)

I do all the cooking when we go away and one of my favorites on the menu is steamed salmon we buy some in the local supermarket about £4 £5 for two they give you some garlic butter, I put the fish onto a metal plate on top of a sauce pan with new baby potato's in, put lid on top of fish whilst potato's are cooking fish is cooking, with fresh garden peas perfect, just add desert spoon full of milk to prevent sticking. A bottle of Ross a wine cheap, tasty, and filling. any fish will do.

It is, but strangely not that widely used.
Anyway, that's where the term originated.
This is the place. It had a lantern glass roof running the length of the building.
