Good Afternoon everyone,
Last February, whilst travelling round Spain, I came across 2 types of Diesel at the pumps. Not sure which type to fill, I asked a local, using my Pigeon Spanish, and was directed to one of the Pumps, which I duly used. A few days later, ( can't remember the exact length of time ) whilst driving along, my Engine Management light came on, but no reduction in Speed, or any other indication of any problems. This light stayed on for about 3-4 weeks, if my memory serves me right, and then it disappeared. No other problems occurred. Can any one of you well seasoned funsters, please advise me, on which type to use, as I intend to travel to Spain again in the very near future?
My M/H is a 2010 Peugeot Boxer
Many thanks.
BillyS

This is my understanding.. so maybe wrong..

In Spain they sell Gasoil, which is diesel for all road vehicles .

they also sell Gasoil B which is the equivalent of our Red diesel, for agricultural use only and requires a licence to buy

so I doubt if you filled up with the 'wrong' diesel, but even if you had it's the same stuff with a lower tax

or it was a Shell or BP garage with V power or Ultimate diesel

Never seen Gasoil B for sale only Gasoil and Gasoil A which is the bit better stuff, used both over the last 12 years with no problem.

On some vehs the engine light can come if fuel filler cap not on tight

Gaseol a ....normal approx €1.25 litre
Gaseol +10 ...equivalent of v power approx € 1.45 litre
Gaseol b .....agrucultiral approx €0.85 litre

I've been using gaseol a in my my the last 6 /7 months that's the stuff you use

I nearly always use Gasoleo A in Spain, occasionally use the dearer stuff.

Have you filled up in Portugal yet?

Recently they introduced 'simple' diesel but in some garages this is dearer than the ordinary stuff, as i have no idea of the difference I use the cheapest, but normally only fill up in Spain as we are near to the Border most of the time and with 120 litre tank and 32/33 mpg can cover a lot of miles on a tankful.

Mine was in limp mode for eight weeks a while back, perhaps we both farted?

Diesel ( Gasoleo “A” ) is a cheaper lower quality diesel on offer for the owners of older engines, do not use this on a modern diesel car. https://spainguides.com/spain-travel-guide/driving-spain/

Agricultural or Off-road Diesel (Gasóleo B)

So @BillyS , perhaps you filled up with Gasoleo “A”.. is your van newish ?

First link is nonsense. All gasoleo A is the same standard as the UK. Anything else is super or plus.
Normal A is perfectly acceptable for use in any type of vehicle.
Gasoleo B is red diesel.normally not available at most service stations but will be often found in village service stations or around small towns. Pump should not be auto operated from till and normally would be locked.
Normally cannot be bought unless you are self employed with a card,a business, or are driving for someone who is and they have an account.
In some villages it is possible to obtain red using containers.

Yes filled up in Portugal a few times , it seems to depend on the garage sometimes the "simple " is cheaper and othertimes it's dearer ...but it's dearer here than in Spain for any diesel I'm paying around €1.45 A litre here compared to approx €1.25 A litre in Spain :(

I always use gasoleo a in cepsa or gasoleo e in repsol garages the other is usually an advanced fuel ( so they say :p )

can't argue with that..

and my first post was essentially correct

The first link is quite funny with some of the stuff it says ....you should read the whole thing especially the bit about parking I nearly spat my juice over the floor lol ...the Spanish are the worst at parking I've ever seen the park on corners roundabouts crossings kerbs pavements anywhere lol

For public use there is only Gasoleo A (Road fuel deisel)
Many forecourts sell as well as the normal "basic" version, their own "premium" poncy brand-named more expensive version.

I always remember many years ago asking a pump attendant in Morocco what was the difference between Euro diesel and diesel. His reply was one diram. I said but what is the difference, he replied one diram .

He was probably right too

I'm always dubious of these performance fuels.
I've a mate works in grangemouth .....all different names of tankers come in to fill up but it's the same fuel they leave with so when do they add this super duper ingredient that every brand of station claims they developed?

If you do a search there was a post about the various fuels and additives.
Someone who worked or does work for a petrol company executive pained it all.
IIRC he worked in the lab or similar (y):)
