Driving home in the MH after a day in the Forest with a number of other vehicles and animals around so driving about 20mph on a narrow 2 way traffic road

A car coming towards me was over the crown of the road and going a bit fast so I pulled over as far to the nearside as possible and stopped to give the oncoming car as much room as possible.
As the car passed, there was a bang but the driver carried on. I quickly checked the side of the van and the mirror for damage - not a mark and so pulled out and carried on.

After driving for about 2 miles, I became aware of a car behind me flashing lights and sounding horn but not sure it was the same car or not

My wife is immuno suppressive and vulnerable to all infections and we don't mix with others unless emergency or essential and because of this and fearing some sort of road rage incident, I decided not to stop in the middle of nowhere as i didnt know who or how many people were in the car. I had been stationery at the time of the incident and so as far as I was concerned had not been involved in an accident

When I reached my junction, there was a car in front and so I stopped. The car that had been behind me was now stationery 30 yds back and in the ns mirror, I could see and hear a woman banging her fists on the side of the van, shouting word that would get her banned from this forum and as she reached the passenger door, she yanked it open shouting that I had taken her effin mirror off. I asked her to shut my van door and said my wife was vulnerable but she contiued shouting, swearing and telling me to get out. It was pretty scary!
At this point, my wife grabbed her interior handle and slammed the door shut enabling me to move off but I could see her literally jumping up and down in the road

I fully examined the van when I got home and not a mark anywhere so still mystified - maybe she straightened up and clipped my rear corner and took her own mirror off in view of her speed as I was stopped

I reported it to the police when I got in just in case she had my reg no. and decided to accuse me of leaving the scene or failing to give details

Not a pleasant end to the afternoon

Glass smashed.
Door opened.
Access gained.
Body extricated pending severity of injuries.
Job done. (y)

I would love to have our reversing/rear view camera linked to a memory card so I can keep the footage. I am sure it it possible but I don't know how.
I bought and fitted a 2 channel DVR that records to a SD card that plugs into the video cables between the my dual rear view cameras and the monitor screen in the cab. It's only 620 X 480 resolution but it's good enough for evidence.

Do not like driving with locked doors, I may need rescuing oneday.
When I first learnt to drive my father insisted I always checked the inside of the car before getting in (it was a Ford so could be opened will anything resembling a key)
And kept the drivers door unlocked
As time passed and I was driving everywhere and anywhere he'd remind me to lock the doors.
Not only had my world moved on but the world changed and hazards were different

Don't worry if it's an emergency, the window on your door will vanish to crumbs in a couple of seconds. The same if I see a dog locked in a hot can and in distress. My answer is so sue me as it was done to prevent loss of life, you will lose in court

Hi folks, we always ensure the habitation door is locked as we drive - this is so we don't get someone opening it and grabbing something - or coming in at lights or in situations we don't control.

I would love to have our reversing/rear view camera linked to a memory card so I can keep the footage. I am sure it it possible but I don't know how.

Perhaps a clever tech person could look at how to extend the camera system to include side mounted cameras such as seen on trucks, so issues are recorded.

D

We have done that. Basically you could talk to DRW electronics about what you want to do, he sells all the kit required. He also attends a lot of the motorhome shows so you could meet him in person and check out his gear.

New Forest roads are not very wide and not very well maintained with some large drop offs at the side which can damage tyres (I've done two). Despite the 40 mph limit some people take no notice of this and many ponies die every year as a result. You are very wise with a MoHo to stop and put the onus on the other driver to pass you.

i like the look of the 622GW - have you gone full hard wired - or are you satisfied with 12v cab cigarette lighter socket and extension connection to rear camera?
Ta
I’ve fitted one of those - Dash Cam Installation - and used the Nextbase wiring kit to permanently power the base unit. If I’m parked anywhere on the street I leave the camera on the mount and running, otherwise I detach it and stow it away when stationary.

Our 622GW is hard-wired with a piggyback fuse that's ignition controlled in the drivers side fuse box.
I don't use the Nextbase rearview camera as I record the dual rearview cameras we have via a DVR unit.

How come on the TV they always cut the roof off?😂😂
Even if it’s just a puncture 😂😂
Dramatisation dear boy, dramatisation. ;)

I can't remember which Brigade it was, but a chap in a really expensive Porche was involved in an RTA/RTC.
The Ambulance crew suspected that he may have suffered spinal injuries, obviously meaning that extrication wouldn't be straight forward. The car was stabilised, and the relevant safety precautions were carried out, prior to removal of the roof by cutting the A, B, and C posts.
The chap was successfully extricated without furthering his injuries, and taken to hospital. (y)
It later turned out that he wasn't as seriously injured as first suspected, and suffered not much more than bruising, (lucky him).

Some time later, his insurers tried to sue the Brigade, on the basis that the injuries did not justify the complete righting off of the car, by removal of the roof.
Needless to say, the insurers were unsuccessful in their plight.....................thankfully.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

We have the Nextbase one, which works great, once it records! Alsatian pointed out to me other day when he was riding shot gun, it wasn't recoding (and transpires hadn't been since July last year)
Think it was an insufficient SD card (something about being writable) so look out for that (apparently)

I've got a simple Aukey dashcam I've had permanently wired since 2017. Only 1080p, but works well enough, especially in low light. I think it does have GPS, but that just makes sure the date and time is correct. It's small and the screen turns off after a few seconds, so I rarely notice it. I did change the SD card a couple of years ago out of precaution and because I had a much larger one that was going unused. I check it occasionally. Never fails to record. No gaps or stutters. Only thing is the auto tagging of events is too sensitive for British potholes, so I switched it off. Not a problem as there's still weeks and weeks of video on the card until it gets overwritten.

Can’t understand why but not we’ve not had any close up confrontations yet when travelling!
My German pal has a disarming nature about him!

Always travel with the doors locked. My reckoning is that if I need rescuing I’ve probably lost my NCD and most of the cab anyway, just hopefully not my legs 😵‍💫😇

I have a separate camera front and rear, with separate SD cards. Since I fitted it, you’d be amazed at how vehicles behind don’t tailgate me and totally change their driving.

Its prominently located on my rear window, in plain view of those behind me.

We inherited a reversing camera with the MH, which can be live whilst driving. Since I have applied a sticker to the rear, I too have noticed less drivers tailgating me now.

Jock

That reminds me of a story in the press years ago when a couple engaged in sex in a mini in Regent's park, London had to call for help, because the man's back had locked up.

Similarly it was deemed dangerous to bend him to extract through the doors, so the fire brigade cut off the rear of the mini to bring him out horizontally.

By then the reporters had arrived. When the lady was asked about the man's condition she replied " Fiddlesticks him! What am I going to tell my husband about the car?"

[It still creases me up every time I remember it]

I had a lady in a Landrover, came around a bend, over the white line, on my side of the road and whacked straight into my wing mirror. I have protective covers, but still the bottom mirror popped out and dangled on the wires. I noted she hadn’t stopped, so drove on, only a few miles later, I had pulled into an opening and had just refitted the mirror and got into the cab, when said lady caught me up and came ranting and raving to my window. Pretty thing she was too, just telling me I had hit her vehicle and that she was late for school to pick her little cherub up. I stayed polite, got out, took many photos of her Landrover and got back in. I then asked about her being on her phone and on the wrong side of the road and if she had a dash camera like the one I have fitted and had filmed her on the wrong side and on her phone. She turned on the waterworks, so at that point, I told her I’d be reporting it to the police with the evidence and suggested she did too. Now this is where it got super silly and funny, as while I started to drive off, she threw herself on my bonnet and tries to hold me back, banging on the bonnet and screaming at me. I just drove on and pushed her out of the way.

Stopped as soon as I could, took videos of my van and wing mirror and phoned plod. Reported the entire encounter and told them I had a dashcam of it and got the all important incident number. A few days later, I got a call from the police, asking if I would like to press charges against her, which I said no thanks, there were no marks or damage to my vehicle and they can press charges if they wanted.

Luckily I had the dashcam and wouldn’t be without it now. After that episode, I went and brought a new dashcam, as the one I was using was quite old and dated, so got this one fitted now. I think it’s great, I’ve downloaded the app, which links to the camera, so I can retrieve any of the images from it at any time and has Alexa built in, which means you can tell it to send clips as well 👍🏻

This is the new one and has a magnetic attachment, so easily removed and connected.

There seems to be a very wide difference in cost for the Nextbase 422 Dashcam.
Cheapest is £90, most expensive is £300 with several between £150 and £200

Before I start digging what did you pay and where from ?
Is it easy to fit ?
(I do not have a rear view mirror on my van, and the dash is all plastic, so how did you fit it)

It looks like it's about £1000 for install. So a non recording install with a small monitor is still £2500. 😫
I thought our install was closer to £500, we had two monitors so bumped the price up a bit.

I got this bundle from Halfrauds and it comes with the windscreen mount, which the power lead plugs into. The dashcam can then be removed as it attached magnetically.

Think the others you were looking at were classed as a bundle with rearcam and wiring etc.

I brought this one and happy with it so far.

The biggest giveaway was two words “speed and woman” both come hand in hand I’m afraid.

Most probs late for her hair appointment.

Back to the subject of mirrors, I met a chap a few weeks ago who had replaced the long arm mirror with a short arm one on his Ducato, has anyone changed their mirror and was it a direct replacement and can you see properly ?
