Having been on the search for a motorhome for 18 months, I now find two which suit as close as I will ever get without ordering new!
Past experience has taught me that I will need to move quickly....
Here is the link to one on Mobile.de.
Broken Link Removed

The second one I came across at a dealer in Belgium where I went to look at something else! I have an option on it so its not listed yet online. It has many of the same features, but with E&P jacks, more solar and Efoy. Without the side cameras & diesel heater. I think these are not deal makers or breakers...? The one in Belgium is 2 years newer (2010) and comes with full service mechanical & has, and a one year warranty. Only slightly more expensive.

Any feedback/advice welcome!
Thanks!

Thanks for your 3 replies, full of info. I'm afraid the one I am looking at, and rather fancy, is the "troublesome pushbutton auto" !!
Can you enlighten me as to what the problems are with this? I have done a google search earlier but hadn't come up with anything about that...must have another look now!
The best gearbox you can find is the Volvo I shift , but not many about as a MH, very rare.

I can’t comment on the Iveco but my Carthago is on a MAN TGL 4.6 chassis and it’s an absolute dream to drive. Sat right over the front wheels makes it it really easy to manoeuvre. On motorways it purrs along on cruise control at 90kph although it has bags more acceleration for overtaking. It handles mountain roads brilliantly with the combination of loads of grunt for going up and great engine breaking for going down. I really can’t fault it and it knocks the Fiats on previous vans into a cocked hat. Good luck with whichever you choose.

I have owned 2 Carthagos on Iveco chassis, the first one was on a 50C chassis 5.6 ton and was not very nice to drive lots of roll and dived on corners and roundabouts and on straight roads had a sway that felt like a train my wife hated the ride so it had to go,
The second one was on a 60C chassis 6.7 ton and can only be described as chalk and cheese, all other spec was the same but 2 years newer hardly any roll very little dive and sat nice on a straight road the only thing I have added is some Marquart shock absorbers to improve off road stability ie grass fields.
We had an old Daily in the business fleet and it behaved exactly like the one you described..roll & dive and sway. Nobody liked to drive it as it handled more like a boat than a van! In fairness, it was probably overdue some attention to the shocks.
I'm not sure the eurocargo on full air will have the same issues, at least hope not

I've seen the MAN one. It's unusual to see a 940m without a smart car garage. I can't see the Iveco one, is it at Alpha?
Hi Jongood, yes its at Alpha but not online at the moment. I saw it when I went there to look at the MAN 940G mainly, and also the MAN 890L. The 890 is a beauty....if only it had a double bed! I tried to figure a way around that issue but couldn't. The 940 G didn't have a black tank!!..and needed a little work, but the black tank was a dealbreaker for me.
Thanks for your earlier post also, very interesting and fair point about the purpose ...commercial or personal

I have seen quite a lot of complaints of the Eurocargo on big A class Motorhomes. A lot saying it’s so agricultural akin to driving a tractor.
I wonder why Concorde persist with them?

The 3.9l is quite cheap and light compared to the others so they probably do all they can to stop psople having a test drive before they put some money down. Tbf I would expect the 6 cylinder to be a lot nicer but not as nice as the MAN. If you want an auto, probably the ultimate is a post 2010 250hp MAN with the 12 speed but super rare.

You will probably find the 940 is on the screaming limit for weight so they may have had to choose between a black tank or a gas tank etc.

How did you find Alpha? I couldn't get on with them, although it was 5-6 years ago and they may have changed.

I think it's all relative though, I do know of one person who jumped out of a modern IVECO daily and into a Eurocargo and yes they were not that complimentary and likened it to an old tractor, I think it was the 4 cylinder Eurocargo, you have to remember though that the modern Daily is just like driving a nice car especially when it's on full and active air suspension and has the ZF 8 speed auto BUT it could do with more torque and some of the big vans need a heavier chassis hence the trucks, I drove a 4 cylinder Eurocargo Phoenix but due to only having 5% adblue I didn't even take it far enough to get warmed up but I don't remember it being that bad and sure it would have got better for warming up.

I think I am right in saying that the motorhome builders find it difficult building on current MAN chassis because of the extra heat from the exhaust system so they only have the choice of Mercedes or IVECO but the Mercedes is not a cheap option.

I ran a 7.5 ton Clou Liner for 6 years which had the 6 cylinder 5880 Iveco engine and it drove very well and with bags of torque, never let me down.

I found Alpha a bit of a mystery to start with, after two failed attempts to get information. ON the third call I was put through to the boss, who is the only one who really knows about the larger vans. I found him easy to talk with and I spent a good day at the place with him. I left feeling positive enough to feel inclined to do business. So far so good

Hi Kilroy

If you can read German or open in Google Chrome for translation this could be an interesting read,

https://linertreff.com/board/thread/6852-man-vs-iveco-eurocargo/

not sure if you have to be a member to read as I have been on a couple of years.
Very interesting read Martin. Its bizarre that people spending over £250k on a motorhome are quite so concerned about fuel consumption .

I'm reading it that those that buy the EC do so mostly because they want front air under 7500kgs. But overall more of them think that the MAN is the gutsiest and the more robust??

Incidentally my old school 6 cylinder MAN with OE front air is a lot heavier than one with steel springs.

Where does the weight come from Jon and there isn't much extra in the suspension surely.

Yes they do digress a bit like we do on here so the first page or two are the informative ones before they drift off, but while you are talking fuel consumption a few of them on truck chassis are getting about the same as us;)

Many thanks to all those who answered my OP!!
It has been a very interesting discussion.
I know that here is no perfect right answer here, but the weight of opinion definitely seems to be in the MAN corner. My preference would be for the MAN, all other things being equal. But as you all know, and I have found out, this is definitely a strong seller's market, and I as a buyer will be a deal taker rather than a deal maker! And as I am not in the position of ordering new with all the desired options, I will be making what is the best compromise, or least worst compromise!, when it comes to buying from what is available on the market. I have been looking for the last 18 months as I said, and thinking about it for a while longer than that. Having retired in 2020 I feel I have lost time and I'm really hoping that I can get a deal done this time. There are a few issues in the background bearing on what will happen which I can't go into at the moment...
I will report back when I have hopefully done a deal!...or indeed if not.
Thanks again

Apparently if you wanted front air on the L2000 you had to order the coach chassis, I'm guessing thats a beefier chassis because of considerations with body flex not cracking the side windows etc?

The 6.9 MAN engine has been around for quite a long time and has always been known for being economical. Its is because its a truck engine and they are designed to run differently. Although HP is advertised its actually the torque that you are after, the MAN engine has roughly twice the torque of the Daily engine and is geared to suit so at 60mph ours is turning at about 1800rpm and doesn't need to downchange as often even though its heavier.
