After becoming somewhat disillusioned with both tomtom and Garmin,I am thinking of installing co pilot to my android head unit.Could anyone who already uses it please give thier opinions on routing, traffic info etc. Also is it straightforward enough to install 3rd party points of interest? Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Was using Copilot for campers and then Trimble bought them out and ballsed it up, so I changed to Sygic which is as most satnavs okay but not brilliant.
About 18 months ago Trimble seemed to finally listen to complaints and reinstated the good points that they had previously removed.
I updated my Copilot and reverted back to using it again and although it's my preferred satnav it is still only as good as the mapping they overlay onto which is the same problem that all camper/motorhome satnavs have.

I use Sygic, the truck version as it allows me to input moho dimensions, also avoid CAZ/ULEZ and toll roads
I also have the Sygic truck version on my headunit and it was happy to try and take us under a 2.5 metre bridge in Herculaneum the same as Copilot was because the mapping used by both is not accurate and that is where the problem lay with all satnavs even if you can put your van dimensions in as you can on both Copilot Camper and Sygic fo Trucks.
Pretty well all satnavs use either use Navteq or Here Maps for their mapping.

Anyone wanting an app for free that just works and has all the features you will ever need (Can't be bothered to list them all!) just download Magic Earth and delete the rest. One little tip though, set it to do journeys is KMs to start with so when you enter vehicle dimensions it will let you put in 2.3m, 7.5m etc unless you are good at converting m and mm into ft and inches. You can then change back and it converts it for you.(y)

Co-Pilot setup correctly is brilliant, put in your dimensions and set it to "Strongly Avoid" local roads and you'll be in for a great ride.
The avoid road types function is essential as inputting dimensions only works if there is an actual signed restriction on the road.
If your display is big enough then you can set it to split screen mode which puts the next turn in a huge box to the right of the map, makes it nice and clear.

Thank you for the info.Could you please tell me if adding 3rd party points of interest is straight forward.

I have gone back to Co-pilot this year after ditching it some years ago. For me, in the MH, it works well and is easy to follow. There is often a a difference between car routes and those for the MH profile I have set.

I can't comment on adding poi. Co-pilot does not work with Android auto, I run it on a tablet.

I use copilot and it has been excellent, one thing to watch out for is when you enter your weights and dimensions into the routing profile choose caravan with the picture of a motorhome and when you save it don't give it another name, the reason for this is if copilot is called from another app like search 4 sites, navigate to option, it defaults to caravan routing which if you've saved as another name won't include your dimensions and routing preferences I learnt this when it took my 6 tonne 8 mtr motorhome over a very narrow mountain road in Spain with nowhere to turn around, I was lucky that nothing came the other way otherwise we would have been well and truly stuck, all that stress would have been averted if i'd understood how it worked properly. Every day is a school day as they say. :giggle:

I hope you do have better luck than me and if you do, then write a better how-to than Coplit has. (y)

I've used Copilot. I've also tried the TomTom app Sygic Truck and Road Lords. Although they have vehicle dimensions, I've never been impressed with the mapping (frequent errors), routing (irrational shortcuts) or guidance (take the M6 towards Lichfield when all the signs say Birmingham). They all seem flawed.

Personally I use Google Maps over Android Auto as it's very rare that vehicle size affects my route anyway. And I've got Sygic Truck on a tablet as a backup.

also my conclusion..

I've tried them all , even bought a Garmin Camper sat nav that I dont use now..

Google maps is by far the best.. or Waze, (Google own it) uses Google maps with a few more bells and whistles

Back in the day before smart phones, I would load POIs for lots of places onto a Garmin sat nav, not anymore, if it's not on Google maps you can navigate direct from one of the aires apps .. Camper contact, Searcforsites etc .. no more POI loading

Loaded Magic Earth onto my phone and all worked okay, but when I loaded it onto my headunit the app would not open, I uninstalled and downloaded it again and again the app would not open on my headunit. :frowny:

I might have gone back to using Copilot when they reintroduced road preferences but they can’t be bothered to make it Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatible so I will stick to Waze and Google Maps. For me if it isn’t CarPlay compatible it isn’t fit for purpose (personal opinion).

I had to change the icon to 22x22 PNG with paint on my PC.Just a thought.
Did you make your own poi for your test or did you use a previously available produced poi.

Would be interested to see a screenshot of your column and header layout with the info of your poi.

I was trying to load my own custom poi's of places to visit and sosta's for our Italian trip a few months back.
Mine is probably a formatting problem in the in the .ov2 file.

Mine doesn't do this. If I navigate to a SfS point co-pilot always uses my last-used profile, which is normally the one tailored to my MH.

That's interesting, perhaps they changed how it works, are you using navigate to from sfs?

Just compared a route with magic earth and tomtom truck and they plotted the same which looks promising especially as it's free. (y)
