Cleaning the roof.

Any tips for products/techniques for cleaning the roof. Even after trying to clean it with water and mild fairy liquid, it remains slightly grey with darker grey sploges all over it.

Another who suggests Jennychem caravan cleaner. Even easier to use if you have a pressure gun. Just follow instructions on container. Sounds expensive but when you realise it’s concentrate, it works out less than £1 per whole van wash.
After, spray with Fenwicks Bobby Dazzler. Protects and helps keep it clean.
Not an easy job so mine only gets done once a year. Last done in April before heading to Europe. Picture taken 3/11.

I have posted on the forum before that when I used “Wet & Forget” on my motorhome roof a couple of years ago, on the next habitation service the engineer pointed out that the adhesive had “failed” and my solar panel had started to lift.

I’m not saying that the product affected the adhesive and caused the solar panel to lift, but it did put me off ever using it again. Now I keep it just for the back garden patio!

The F word, frequency. Once it is clean, a quick wash will keep it that way.

We can’t ignore ours as it is parked under our bedroom window!
Mine too, it's a beautiful sight the day after washing!

(I use ceramic car shampoo & a soft brush on an extendable pole, standing on ladder with assistant for security and dry with big microfiber towel wrapped round same brush.)

Saw our roof from friend's second storey flat balcony, oh dear.
what a mess, no longer feel safe on ladders, although neighbour has said we can park next to his garage and wash it from the (garage) roof, arms not long enough to reach the front with a brush but can always turn the van round 🤣
Will have a chat with him in a few days and see if we can get it cleaned and polished for the winter, but may see if we can get it done for us, last time we were really pleased with how it looked, but it didn't last, had been polished, but not waxed as asked and paid for.
Tam, I say Northernraider got time for a quick run to Yorkshire for a valeting job before bombing off with the dugs. Could always bring to to Uncle Lenny's for you

If you had said earlier but unfortunately I'm on ferry Tuesday morning.

If polishing, don't forget to use a sealer or wax afterwards, that way the shine could last you two or three years before polishing again.
More than the wax that comes in the 'wash & wax' product? Have you got favourite brand names to mention?

I use Fenwicks motorhome cleaner from a spray, long handle soft brush and hose. I have a telescopic step ladder to reach the out parts of the roof and a smaller step ladder to reach through the skylight for other areas. I don't clean the roof as often as the rest of the motorhome, but several times a year.

I used Jennychem cleaner. 100% effective. Diluted spray to roof, leave for about 3 minutes then I use a microfibre on a mop to agitate it, then hose off. Very little effort and brought our black and green roof garden back to white. We live under trees, so it gets heavy sap layer, difficult to remove with normal soap and water or even snow foam.
I very much agree with you LostinWales, I use the same Jennychem Caravan cleaner and it is the best you can use.
Even bought a gallon for my brothers Hymer, and he was really impressed with it too! (y)

My previous MH cleaned the roof first time after 5 years, used flash then autoglym resin polish. Came up well but did this from on top of the roof. Better if you can do from a ladder, good friend of mine fell off his roof whilst cleaning breaking both his legs, very long recovery time at his age. So be very very careful! Next time I’ll try the Jenny Chem mentioned.

I use Muk Junkie. It's supposed to be diluted (from memory) at 6 to 1 and sprayed on. I found with a really disgusting roof that 3 to 1 was better. Brush and then hose gently off. Didn't add to the amount of damp that Elddis already let in!

When I first got the motorhome, I had Armourgard on the van, it lasted 4 years, every time it rained, all the dirt came off, and kept the shine, now I just use washing up liquid to get dirt off, I try not to use polish (as it removes top layer of paint) but only if I must on the black marks that I sometimes get if can't be removed with water & soap, and also when paint loses it's gloss due to the sun & pollution, but the important thing is to always seal after cleaning and polishing, for that I use the Chemical Guys Blazin Banana spray wax, the theory is, like Bananas everything slips off.

I hate all this "this product is best" as I always feel it's in the eye of the beholder.

I always clean my roof when I clean my van and having heard all the raving about "jennychem" i thought i would give it a go.

For 20 plus years ive used Fenwicks products, ever since the owner came to a rally when he was starting out and cleaned my caravan windows with some new stuff way back when..

Anyhow, I got that jennychem stuff after a 3k mile trip to Spain and back. I bought the foam sprayer as well.

I got on my roof , sprayed it allover, followed the instructions and literally felt I had been unfaithful to Fenwicks.
But it was amazing, and I hate speaking highly of these things. But I was genuinely speechless. I even got Nikki out to assess.

I'm mad for it now, its all over me cars me scooter and if Nikki stands still long enough she'll be getting Jennychemed too

Jennychem have 25% off some products for black friday, use code BF25 at checkout (y)

You can even buy a 210 litre drum of Jennychem caravan cleaner on their website for £295. It would last a long time as you're supposed to dilute it 1:25 or 1:10 for very soiled caravans.

I just bought five litres and got 25% off with the BF25 discount code.
