Classic Hymers ..a good buy ?

excellent.. thanks.. :thumb:

I wonder what happened to Deepcar

In the past there were several importers of older German motorhomes to the UK. The hayday was when there was 1.5 Euros to the £. A 15000 Euro van in Germany could be sold for £15000 in the UK, giving a good return. When the £ dropped against the Euro many found it not so profitable. Coupled with the ease of personal imports from EU countries, many of the grey importers packed the job in. The older Hymers and other quality built vans have almost dried up in Germany as many are now going to the old commy block countries along with Poland. We are now in competition with these newly emerging motorhome markets.

Still some around, we have met another S700 based in Suffolk. You are welcome to look around ours (but we won't sell, still too fond of the old thing!).

Cheers

Hi Jim,I Forget the guys name from Deepcar but he sold up and went back to live in Germany  He may have just let it go

Jim I have had x2 Hymer 534 rear lounge, current model 534 is with Fiat 2.5 turbo engine, 1995 model , no probs with parts being available, brake overhaul and engine services. I have fitted an oven. 534 model seem scarce on the market when i was looking only 3 were on the market and 2 were at dealers, this over 9 months of searching.. the light wood version does spread the light much better and agree with previous comment that Hymer table is rather bulky and heavy to travel around with. have just completed x3 ski trips UK to France, no oil consumption and never missed a beat. Each to his/her own re layout, but when you find one you will feel its right.:thumb:

Old Hymers

Jim,
We bought our last Hymer fro European Campers in Preston he specialises in Hymers, he may have what you are looking for, Also Ikonic Campers in Immingham specialise in older Hymers, he might help.
Our first Hymer was a '97 564 which was built like a chieftain but never gave any problems. Our present one, a 642 has been problematic so you are correct to stay with the older ones.
Still wouldn't have anything else though.
Good luck
Johnnie G

Hi Jim

Must say I agree with you the older Hymers did have a certain something about them. We have looked at many over the years even if shot they still have that certain air about them. I rember seeing a Merc. Auto. in MMM mag. a few years ago and would have loved to have owned it.
Best of luck in your search.:thumb::thumb:

If it was an 82/83 S class LHD it might have been ours  It was a great machine and took us all over to kayak meets - when we sold it we got almost as much as we paid for it.

Jim . I have a B534 , 1995 model , never missed a beat, great Motorhomes ,hope you find one , because when you do you will never let it go . best of luck .

In my opinion the 534 is as good a layout as it gets in a small van. The blue model was the best with light wood and hard wearing cloth. There is good visibility all round, and you can see straight through the van from the U shaped lounge. The sides of the U are long enough for 2 people to lie on and watch TV when its fitted on the exterior wall of the shower. A good sized work surface for a smaller van and the dropdown bed is a good size. The gas locker holds 2 Spanish bottles and many also have an LPG tank. A good choice Jim and perfect for 3. I know people that fulltime in a 534.

Hi Dave.. thanks for your input..

yes, that's also my thoughts.. and in a few years we will be going away on our own.. so perfect for two..

I like your RMB and have considered buying one in Germany .. but good ones are few and far between.. and as you mentioned, there is no real cost benefit of importing..

So back to plan A.. running since 2009..

A late model one here Jim with air suspension. With a little negotiation it will come at 10K sterling. This guy is a big dealer and has a pretty big turn round of stock. He is well known to importers and will sort paperwork.

Hello Jim

Would you consider a B544? If so here's one at £9500 ono LHD and has had it's last 2 years of touring fully documented.

Hi Jim, Dont disregard the Hymer S550. Its exactly the same layout, but on the Merc chassis. Slower, but more dependable.

A low mileage well cared for one here thats well under 10K sterling. Comes with solar etc.
