CL sites - rules

We love the CLs and would be very disappointed if legislation destroyed what is a brilliant system. For campers they are a real asset but they also bring in remuneration for many rural businesses. I hope nothing gets in the way of their continued success and growth.

We like to use CL/CS sites because of the 5 Unit limit. In Dorset this week we were booked into one and when we arrived there were six pitches in use and one spare shoehorned in between two others. We left and went elsewhere - another CS but with tents allowed so there were more units but the field had so much space it didnt matter.

We would not exempt a landowner doing that, it's bang out of order An adjacent occasionally used rally field is OK. But two exempt sites for the same field is just blatant planning avoidance and taking the pee.

When issuing exemptions we try to build a good rapport with council planners as while they can’t really stop us issuing, they can really make life difficult. If we were to be seen to help land owners flout planning rules, that would not help our case at all.

The CL system is superb, it’s growing fast, and it’s a massive asset to the motorhome community. But at the stroke of an MPs pen, legislation can be amended. It’s easy to imagine that suddenly all exempt places need a council licence to operate like regular campsites. Especially tagged onto the back of environment issues (Waste Disposal) or health and Safety, (electricity and water provision) Insurance, breeches of CL rules, etc. This would get through parliament quick and easy, and don’t expect the big clubs to lobby against it. They would be all for it!
Thanks for the explanation, Jim, i now fully understand why 5 is the max, if they want to accommodate more then the onus seems to be on the owner to apply for the necessary licences etc, seems fair to me

We used one last year that has 14 marked pitches and the owner can then shuffle the visitors around the grass cutting and maintenance. In reality there were often up to 8 occupied pitches but as everything was marked out there was no issues with space etc.

I think quite a few CLs have 6 pitches to allow choice, or to rest/repair a pitch.
We are currently on a CL with 5 grass pitches. At the back of the pub, and away from the CL is a separate site with about 6 or 7 pitches, sort of hard standing. They are two very separate sites, although they do share some facilities such as bins and loo disposal.

I have been on quite a few sites that also have cl/cs adjacent to them on the same land
I live 3 miles from one that is like it, big site that has a field for cl/cs, still has the full site facilities available to them
Each to their own 🤷‍♂️

Some years back I booked a site that, upon arrival, already had five vans. Go with the flow, I thought. Maybe leaving later. Subsequently two further vans arrived, one of whom plugged into a multiway socket on my EHU bollard so in all 8n units on a small CL. I noticed that about a year later the CL, which didn't really have room for more than 5, had been struck off.

A CL I occasionally stayed on was a pub car park, nothing special but handy for a bus into York, and ofter had a dozen or more vans on it. A bit difficult to determine whether they were camping or parking.

We regularly use a place in Stourport.

No hookup, just a field. It’s £10 a night and worth every penny, the field is huge and the owner has recently had to sort the waste disposal out. I reckon it must have cost him thousands.

I told him to keep the change last time we stayed as he can’t make much money out of it. He laughed as he told me it probably costs him money to keep it open and up to standard. I think he is right.

As there is no hookup, it’s never ever full and mostly just us.

Do I care if occasionally he has 6 people on, not one jot!
