For certain reasons (good ones though) we are actually staying in the U.K. May to July this yr instead of going to Europe. We don’t really like U.K. campsites but like CL/CS sites. I was looking for the forum members views on which I should go for as I’m bit of a tight person so don’t want the expense of joining both clubs. I’ve semi ruled out pub stops as we’re planning to stay 3 odd days at each one

We have used a dozen CL sites for different reasons and all have been fine for us and we enjoy being on quieter and smaller sites sometimes. At least 3 of them we never even saw the owners - booked, arrived, rang a bell if available, no answer, looked at field, see where we can fit and check nobody has left a marker behind, park up, hand brake on and time for a brew......... or a walk with the cats :)
There are more CLs than CS sites.. why we are members on the The Caravan and Motorhome Club

However, even Cls / CS sites prices have gone up considerably, £15 - £30 ... but still GVFM .. and cheaper than both Commercial and Club sites..

There are still a number of basic CL sites without EHU which we prefer ..

We don’t need EHU as self sufficient haven’t camped in the U.K. for 6yrs, bit of a price difference compared to aires in Europe 😢

so the map will be useful

and yes, aires are generally a lot cheaper than UK prices ..however , a CL is generally a nicer place to camp than an aire ..

we find the best aires are ex municipal sites, now run by Camping-Car Park

Have never used either CL or CS but we are members of the CCC. Reason is their Temporary holiday sites which give good value and locations. Ideal if you want several days somewhere but also if you just want to do a night, fill water and empty cassette etc.
CCC also have over 60's discount and some sites allow you to call in just to get water, empty toilet and use showers.

CAMC CL's for us too, there's definitely more choice than the CCC CS's.

If you don't need hook up its always worth asking for a discount, some will knock a few quid off.

Bear in mind that C&CC also gives you the Temporary Holiday Sites as well as the CS's. Not many THS's at this time of year but will be starting soon. You can download their "Out & About" app.

Bear in mind also that not all the CS's or CL's will ask for your membership cards. We have stayed on quite a few of both and have only ever been asked for membership cards a handful of times.(THS's always ask for proof of membership!)

Might be also worth looking into other perks of membership. I think Go Outdoors may give discount for C&CC membership. C&MC usually undercut Eurotunnel fares by about 10% and membership can reduce some insurance premiums.

If I may be so bold as to add to tonka's post.
If you have it in mind to wish to go on rallies run by either club then as far as I'm concerned the CCC beat the CAMC hands down.
For the vast majority of events, there is no booking required with the CCC. There are a good number of 'Temporary Holiday Sites' which is their name for an event lasting more than 120hrs and last but by no means least, invariably there is no requirement to state exactly how long (or short) your intention to stay will be.
We've stayed for one night only on the last night of a THS when travelling a long distance between two events before now.

Yes, the Camping & Caravan Club (CCC) only has 1200 CS's.

It must be terrible trying to find one? 😆

We are in both clubs but tend to use more CLs than CSs.
CAMOGG Facebook group has lots on non ehu sites. I don’t think the CCC age discount is available in the summer peak.

Thanks for all your advice quite the idea of the CCC temp sites I suppose if I’m saving myself £330 from not using eurotunnel I might as well join both and have the best of both worlds 🤣

With CCC one never has to have a EHU, if you don't want it! 😄

We've done quite a few CL sites..... favourite two are Big Sky at Brisley in Norfolk and Long Garth at Aiskew nr Bedale..... and don't tell everyone but Big Sky is excellent...great hosts, shower/loo's too and a superb pub just down the road.....We are back there in May for a cycling weekend and probably later in the year too

Both clubs have good and bad points, both have certificated-locations as do mhf, both have short and ths or holiday rallys.

I guess we could have a permanent thread on this forum recommending CL/CS sites. Knowing how efficient Big Jim is, there may even be one. I'm in CCC specifically for THS access, but it's a useful tip about no one asking for membership details of the formar sites.

If self sufficient then the C&CC club THS’s are great value, stayed on several in Scotland last year, usually around the £10 / night mark. Edinburgh one particularly good value for an easy bus ride into the city centre during the popular festival time in August.

It is fabulous to see you all using the smaller sites.

We have been busy since mid January, getting ahead ready for Easter opening. The field got its first high cut today, the actual campsite is looking good at the moment but the far end is still a mess following all the recent storms. Plenty of work still needs to be done. Hopefully see loads of you in April at the Late Easter Rally or the first Craft And Chat Rally that follows it. We have requested slightly drier weather this year. :sun:

Prices for CL's are getting a bit OTT now IMHO. On another forum, a CL owner was advertising their site. Grass only, no drive over grey dump, no EHU and they wanted £18 pn and a 2pm arrival time. Quite a few new CLs are now £25+. It's enough to make you go abroad.

I agree, but at least us oldies don't have the cost of extra health insurance and tunnel costs to take into consideration, if we're staying in this country. 😄

Still rather be abroad though, this will be our 1st time staying in uk for an extended period
So, if there's little price difference and you would prefer to be abroad, why are you staying in the UK? 🤔
