Choosing Between TomTom and Garmin GPS

If y

If you’ve never used or experienced what3words you’re missing the point of this system, unlike postcodes etc this can will get you to within a 3mtr sq location,
As a member of the Emergency Blood Bike service we use this all the time along with most if not all of the other emergency services, with this system we can navigate right to the entrance doors of destinations which is useful in a complex hospital situation so campsite, aires etc would be easily located right to the door of reception or wherever you wished to be

I have used it and it is useful. I was responding to the question regarding when sat navs would adopt it. What would W3W add to sat navs that isn’t already accommodated by the existing methods? Sure, it wouldn’t be a detriment but does it really add anything?

In terms of resolution, Lat/long is just as accurate as W3W.

Have a shelf full of Tom Toms at home and all have the same problem in the camper on the dash, with that massive window it lets in so much light that you cannot read the tom tom screen. However we are also motorcyclists and one of the expensive options for a BMW bike is the BMW sat nav, which is Garmin. Lots of memory and maps for life and built like a brick outhouse. But super bright for use outdoors. I sold the bike but kept the sat nav. For the price of another Tom Tom I bought the car adapter and this is what we now have in the camper. Mapping? Havent noticed any difference but I can see it and if I turn up the volume hear it as well. Currently mulling over fitting a double DIN radio/satnav/Camera screen/infotainment job in the dash, Android based but only really so I can answer phone calls using the buttons on the steering wheel. Thought the tick list option when new was too expensive when we ordered the van in 2017 but our Hyundai car has spoilt me. However I never have the radio on or music playing while driving as I find it distracting, and thats not good.
yep I've got the Navigator VI for the bike too. Find it pretty decent especially if set to twisty roads. When in Germany in May though I often found it taking a detour for a couple of kms onto a very twisty side road and then back onto the road it had just left.

surprised it works well in a motorhome given its route planning is designed for motorbikes. Will have to try it. Certainly a good back up for the car though. (y)(y)

Lat/Long to multiple decimal places is even more accurate.

6 decimal places takes you to around 11cm of accuracy whereas 8 takes you to just over a mm.

6 is, generally, the the maximum places used as it's deemed to be close enough for a pi**ed male Funster to hit the urinal effectively!:whistle2::giggler:

do you then need to type in the language of the country which might mean using a lot of different letter accents or does it translate automatically?
We mainly use the ACSI and simply type in the longitude/latitude or ‘locate on the map’.
Good question, sorry no idea, you'd have to experiment...

Agreed, I was just countering the suggestion that W3W was ‘better’ in that respect.
