My Niece , her husband and their 3 year old Daughter are coming for a short holiday for 4 days from denmark ,, what shall we do about child seat for the little one when using car or MH .. I dont want to spend £70 on something I wont use again ???

I have reas all the rules and still not sure

I don't think you have much choice but to use a proper child's seat.
Do you have enough belted travel seats for all 4 or 5 of you ( 3 Danes plus you and a partner/hubby/wife)?

Where are you as we have one you could borrow if only for a few days, if we have to run the grandkids about we can always borrow another from our daughter.
We are on the south coast next to Worthing.

Child seats are much bigger than they used to be, you might find it very tight, if not impossible to fit 2 adults and a child seat in the rear of a car.

I thought your Adria 680 only had 4 belted seats. One will be needed to secure the Child Seat. This only leaves seats for the driver and two other passengers. Expect you have at least 5 belted seats in your car.

I can understand your reluctance to buy a child seat which may not be used again, but irrespective of the legalities I would not take the chance of risking injury or worse for a 3-year old child should you be unlucky and become involved in an accident.

I would be wary of buying second-hand unless I knew the seller, as it may have been in an accident at some point.

How heavy is the child? You may be able to use a booster with a lap & diagonal belt. Halfords & Aldi have cheap ones.

It is not the child's weight that is the deciding factor, but their height.

But how many usable seat belts do you have, ie forward or rear facing, NOT counting the driver and passenger?

Perhaps ask them how big their childs car seat will be so you can work out whether it will fit? (I know they don't have a car or seat...but it's their child)

Where are you. We have one bought two years ago and used twice. If anywhere near Suffolk or doing the Swaffham Shindig, you are welcome to borrow it. Not sensible to post unfortunately but may be able to agree a handover point. When do the come.

If you as the driver have a child not properly restrained and anything happens, the book will come flying your way.

Rule is very simple "every person travelling in the vehicle has to be restrainted".
Unless, for the pedants, the vehicle was not originally fitted with seatbelts, then fill your MoHo to MGW.
So how many seatbelts does your MoHo have?
If just JerryZ + niece & husband + 1 child you need 4 belted seats.
If there is a Mrs JerryZ then you'll need 5 belted seats.

The dot gov website states:

You can choose a child car seat based on your child’s height or weight.
I don't beleive the regulations permit "chose", your "choose" is dictated by the regulation.

If you google requirements does not the first line not read,
"Children must normally use a child car seat until they're 12 years old or 135 centimetres tall, whichever comes first."
so child seat for 3 year old or contact NBA. There are multiple other requirements, weight/height.

The phrase "baby seat using a harness" does not explicitly say it, but I presume that baby seat should restrained by a seatbelt.
Bottomline everyone traveling in the vehicle has to be restrained in a belted seat.
Unless, for the pedants, the vehicle was not originally fitted with seatbelts, then fill your MoHo to MGW.

It does, and it states height or weight, so not 100% clear.
Thats because there are two standards.
Car seats based on height are i-Size car seats, complying with regulation ECE R129. This is a more stringent regulation, first introduced in 2013, and is applicable to the majority of car seats these days.

Car seats based on weight are group seats conforming to regulation ECE R44.03 or ECE R44.04, which is an older (although still legal) regulation.

Well if you want to take the risk with a grandchild's life, and the parents are content with that, and then you are involved in a accident, then you have to explain first to the police and then to a court why you felt the regulations did not apply. Not only would any court ever accept the looseness of the wording the exemptions section should the worst happen, but you would also have to live with your conscience for the rest of your life if the child is permanently maimed or worse. I cannot believe anyone would even consider risking maiming or killing their 3 year-old grandchild.

If an adult makes the conscious decision to put themselves at risk by not wearing a seat belt that's fine although still irresponsible if there is nothing solid between them and the driver/front seat passenger.

If you can't all fit in safely, you need to take a second vehicle or someone needs to travel by public transport.

I know we all travelled without seatbelts for years, and yes some children were killed, but the world, the law and traffic densities have all moved on.
