Hi.

Chausson or Swift?

Which is better quality in your opinion please?

Currently own a tent and have just started to search for a motorhome.

Thanks....

Chausson for us ... we have one.
Build quality is ok.. it was full timed in for 6 months with no probs..
It's great in cold conditions being well winterised. .
Ours is on the 3ltr fiat maxi chassis... never struggles..
Most importantly though ... the layout suits us.

Certainly not a Swift .. They come with all the bells and whistles but are not that well put together. Plastic wood is used in the structure so it doesn't rot when the rain gets in.

I don't get this "Swift will leak" business.
We have a 2000 Bessacarr (Swift) which is dry, warm, comfy and reliable. Everything works as it should.
Layout is king, not brand snobbery.

Chausson are OK but German vans are more solidly built, I wouldn't risk my hard earned cash on anything British built.

Really?
See John Stanton's post, which says:

"Trust me (I speak from experience) the Germans are just as capable as other manufacturers of delivering poor quality - just search this forum if you need evidence of this :D. Chausson are no worse than any others."

You can get good or bad in any brand.

It depends what you want it for.
All Chaussons are well made for winter use, Swifts arent.
Swift have more comfy seats, but have smaller water tanks.
There's more to choosing a motorhome than superficial looks, base vebicle and layout.
Thanks for posting.

Want it for yearly uk breaks with family - 2 adults 2 kids then the long one (5 weeks) in France etc...

Many thanks for posting...

Swift for me , had two new vans , no problems . :) There are horror stories for most makes, my advice would be to shop around , don't hurry and research.
Thanks for your advice.

We are starting this early. Not intending to purchase for a full year.

If your new to Motorhoming then have a look at Benimar's same parent company Trigano as the Chaussons similar build technology, but they do come with nearly all the options already fitted.
Will research trigano tonight....

Thank you for your advice and taking the time to share it.

Chausson for me. We changed a 4t Allegro 96 for a 3.5t Hymer exsis-i for licence reasons, and as far as I'm concerned the Chausson was better quality.

Swift covers a range of possibilities as they've acquired 8 other MH & Caravan brands along the way. Our latest is a Bessacarr, which is Swift-built. It appears to be better build quality like-for-like than Swift's own brand, and is certainly better than CI, which we previously owned. A couple of minor warranty issues have emerged but I've learned to expect teething problems. No complaints here anyway. I'm not familiar with Chausson - we went for layout and price rather than brand-name.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Have just started researching and local dealer had chausson and swift with same layout that suited.

Thank you....

Had two Chaussons now . We like them they seem good for the price others swear by Swift. I would look at both and choose by layout and if you buy from a dealer their reputation. Our first was a private sale and looking back a bargain as it had high miles but was still a good buy.
Thanks for your reply.

Found a layout by each brand that was identical at local dealer.

Thanks for your advice...

Chausson every time. Yes I'm biased because we bought one but only after looking at all the main competitors. The build quality and space being just 2 of the main reasons. Add to that the fact that a compatible Bolero was 15k dearer and still a bit dated inside (just my opinion) made it an east choice for us. Two years on and our 718EB is still as good as new

As you can see .. there's lots of experience here .. almost any question on motorhomes and their use can be answered ... any other subjects are pretty well covered too. You would certainly benefit from taking out a subscription to be a part of it all.

Had our Chausson for nearly 12 months and 4000 miles. On a Transit base.Really love it, and bought it as it ticked our must have boxes ( how the heck did italics get here)

My advice, spend time looking and trying, working out the compromises you will be making with any design and work on your list of what you like to get it down to a list of the four must haves.

Great advice.

Really appreciate you taking the time to help us.

There is more to it that just the make .......

We had a Chausson and were very happy with it but changed last year to a SunLiving (by Adria) as the layout that suited us better.

Found same layout by both brands so need some knowledge on brands to help with decision.

Chausson with Welcome spec for me then. Mostly because of the better cold weather provision.

Most new vans including Swift's are fully winterised ( grade 3, which is the highest rating) and of the same standard as other Euro built motorhomes like Hymer and Chausson.
Our 20 year old Swift kept us comfortable and warm in -12 c last year and with onboard fresh water (110litre) we had plenty of water for a good few days.
I suggest you try and have a look at both makes and compare specifications and have a good poke around inside to compare build quality.
If you are thinking of buying new, I believe Swift also carry out pretty comprehensive road testing of their vans at Millbrook, as well as crash testing. One of the very few makes that does this.
Good luck in choosing, Chausson are really nice well made vans too, but I just wanted you to have a few real facts about Swift motorhomes.

As far as I'm aware Chausson only have a 2 year base vehicle warranty whereas U.K. Fiat / Swift, like Elddis, have 3 years which could affect a decision if buying new.

Water ingress warranty is longer with Swift too.

As has been said earlier, why restrict to just Chausson or Swift. When we looked we narrowed ourselves down to the Chauson 500 or a Pilote G600L. In the end we ended up with an AS Nuevo because when we sat down and looked at pluses and minuses we realised the two we had picked were more what we wanted to be able to cope with rather than what actually suited us now and for at least the next 6 years. (Unless I strangle Keira in the mean time !!)
