CCC don't take american express :-/ Looks like CAMC don't either

Why bother with a card turned do by so many. ls it a credit card.
Yes its a credit card and did you read my last post as already answered the question you pose?

Flying this year and you get 4 lounge visits free which suits our plan - a double legged return. The wife will apply this year after I took one out last year thus keeping us away from the airport hoi polloi again. The points bought Amazon vouchers but we always had our Nationwide to hand. Like last year's, this one will be cancelled before renewal which they did not object to.
On the beach are giving free lounge visits with holidays so may be hours polio in there

Going outside school term mid winter so should be ok :)

Tbh as long as it's not a small airport, on the beach will be using the cheaper lounges, and the amex vouchers usually good for "better ones". For places like Leeds bradford it'll be same lounge as there is only one or two. Wife flew out to spain on Tuesday and said the "my"lounge at Gatwick one was "filled" with on the beachers, but the other one she could get in was fine.

Used to be a charge card. Like a credit card BUT you have to pay the entire balance at the end of the month.
Might have changed since I last looked at them.

Yeah, we have the charge card varient, don't like credit cards. Has to be paid in full.

But the airmiles earnt are the main factor for having them, alongside insurance and other benefits (Insurance on the card we have covers rental cars in full, ie, you can decline ALL insurances in near every country of world) -> if you rent a car in US the savings on this recently can easily cover any card fees.

And as I've mentioned the other benefits on things like hotels can be "unique". The Fine hotels scheme in particular about 5 years ago was of sinificant value in Vegas and other major US cities, with a real $2-300 a night in value.

I dunno what Lloyds cardnet is, but I can say that C&CC don't take it as payment online when booking that's for sure.

As for many of the other points, this amex is a nectar one so is good intro offer for nectar points if a certain amount is used in first 3 months and there's nectar points with every £ too. No "subs" until year two and that will be outstripped with the rewards in nectar points.
I mean if retailers can afford not to take it that's grand, but in the first 3 months ive had it these are the first two refusals and suprised me.
Cardnet is Lloyds offering to accept card payments, lots of different ones out there, each clearer will have their own version, there's also izettle, sum up and big ones like world pay.

We have Amex Nectar, transferring straight to Avios.

And Barclaycard Avios (the free one) as an alternative.

Have you looked at Head For Points? They have an article on maximising Amex sign-up bonuses, i.e. which order to swap cards.

Ah so locally ie on site I'd be ok, but as I say, not from a booking perspective online.

We have 2, wife has the BA Amex as the companion voucher is compelling and her train season ticket gets us the bonus every year. From my years of flying to India we thankfully have a pile of BA miles so we're using the companion vouchers for "cheap holidays" every year.

I have a normal MR owning Amex (Gold) but have had Platinum in past. MR points are useful as they move to near every airline so you can get a redemption on Virgin (as we have before) and don't just restrict you to OneWorld.

Worth noting Virgin historically (thanks to headforpoints for this) had some compelling deals with miles, you could buy a economy flight and upgrade to Business for around half the price of doing a full redemption with entirely miles + taxes, because you pay the taxes regardless anyhow. Made 2 flights to US in Business cost overall around same as economy all ain.

YOu may find it better to earn Avois and CONVERT to nectar -> I believe the rate may be better doing this, but we usually move nectar in other way.

Just googled it and althought this was the best way of earning, they fixed that on March 11, so now the Nectar and Avois route earn same Nectar.

I don’t know why so many people use AMEX, apparently the retailer fees are much higher than other cards, I would refuse them if I had a business

They used to have a minimum salary to qualify for a card, many years ago I had post with a guaranteed acceptance offer, I was fairly well paid then so filled in the form

They turned me down 🤣

Never missed having one 🤔👍
I have used American Express since 1992.

My company also accepts AMEX. My fees for accepting the cards are the same low rate as all other Credit Cards. Though debit card are cheaper.

If I have a problem with anything I purchase with American Express, they are the easiest people to deal with. Fantastic customer service.

We booked tickets for my daughter to fly with Ryan air. My other daughter code to use Mastercard. Then there was a problem with the flights. American Express credited my account immediately. Within 72 hours AMEX wrote to me to say they found in my favour and the credit was now a refund.

My other daughter never got her money back.

AVIS tried to charge my account post rental for insurance on a car. Contacted AMEX, €380, the whole lot immediately credited to my account. AVIS failed to respond to dispute. AMEX wrote to me and I was awarded a full refund. Free car hire.

Goldcar, Spain. Paid £280 to car trawler with ANEX. Long story, had to pay at the airport with Visa Credit card. Brand new Mercedes broke down. We ended up with no car for 8 days and a bill for £1200 on visa.

AMEX refunded straight away. Nightmare trying to get money back of VISA . They even dropped the case. I had to get VISA to reopen it.

I still ended up £250 out of pocket. For s car that Mercedes confirmed in writing was a manufacturing fault.

I collect my AMEX points and convert them to AVIOS points.

Indeed, should mention this, in covid, our travel insurance refused to pay out on some flight we couldn't use due to lockdown.

Amex booked flights however (which were most) were refunded with little hassle. I was reading on news people without amex using visa waited 9 months for same on the particular airline here.

There are reasons as said other than miles to use amex, but their customer service is 100% a good reason as it's easy to deal with and you usually have a refund in your account in minutes.

During covid a friend had a similar issue with cruise line on a substatial claim (he was retiring and had booked entire extended family, of some 26 people, paid for by him) on a cruise line, we are talking small house levels of spend here as he had booked multiple cabins for a 14 day cruise-> and amex again refunded within 72 hours the entire sum after the cruise line rejected this, offering future credit which would be potentially useless to him (given he could not guarantee entire family availability during covid). He rebooked on a different cruise line post covid, as the fact the line he used refused the refund left him with a sour taste at that particular cruise line. He refuses to book travel now unless on amex.

I convert nectar to AVIOS !.

Very cheap flights
Ditto, and usually availability.

The best thing with Avois is there is no one-way penalty unlike a normal fare. (You usually pay a LOT for a one way flight unless it's with Ryanair).

That’s brilliant.

Ryan Air Really don’t like American Express, but I guess a lot of passengers pay with it.

A client if mine runs a travel company. Ryanair would not refund him £3 million pounds in refunds. He refunded his clients from his company and fought with Ryanair.

I have not travelled on Ryanair for around 7 years now. My family do mind.

We have stayed at wyton lakes adults only near Huntingdon not too far away with pubs and garden centre close by for food
But they only accept cash no cards of any sort.
