CATS IN VAN ON HOLIDAY?

Couldn't take our Bengal away with us he goes crackers in a vehicle and hates being caged up. He is babysat at home when we go away ... He is 14 1/2 now which I believe is pretty old for a Bengal. Think a more docile breed would cope better .... Birman?

So so sorry to hear about your cats, must have been heartbreaking. We got our Bengal Dolly, in September from a breeder, Dolly couldn't raise her kittens so breeder sold her. She is very skittish and has spent the first 18 months of her life caged up. We are working hard to build her confidence she is loving and doesn't mind the camper, but I think she needs to be able to get out while we are away (been locked up enough) so am training her on a harness. I'm all for a laugh and a bit of fun but don't understand the blatant nastiness myself.

Bengals are a lovely breed very owner friendly great with kids need lots of attention, I wouldn't have a boy again he is very bossy, but would have another girl if I couldn't get away on holiday. Probably another snow bengal probably ex breeding seem to be lots of then need loving homes. Off shopping now !

She likes the attention but is not always confident to come for it. Got a long way to go with her. Wonder if she's been hurt or mistreated or if just simply a case of not having been socialised.

When I left the Army I went through a bad patch for a couple of years. Someone gave me a baby ginger tom ( the last thing I thought I wanted at that time!) My Dad died later that year and Mum missed him so much she was on her way out too. I gave her little Baldrick and it did the trick. Mum and Dad loved caravanning so I took Mum to a Cl behind the Alhampton Arms near Castle Cary a few times, a favorite watering hole of theirs. Of course Baldrick had to come too and although she kept him on a harness most of the time there were times when he escaped. The call would then go out to all in the pub and a search would begin in the village. Grown men, many half pissed, would be running round the village calling "Baldrick....,Baldrick" We always got him back and it cost me a fortune in beers!!

We use to have two other cats (in addition to Baldrick, who we had back after Mum passed on some 12 years later) a brother and sister. We named them Dick and Fanny........never dared take them away!

For the last 3 years we have been taking our 2 cats everywhere in our MH across EU and UK. The old one died in February this year aged 20years and the other one is 8 years old. Both had no problems being left in MH whilst we went out for the day as we have the fan other have talked about in this thread and when on EHU we use the aircon. We have had visitors to our MH and they did not know we had them until we told them ( so much for the smell ianhyslop )
Now we have only one cat she loves all the extra love she gets. I would say a pet is for life not to be left behind when you go away ( unless you have no choice ).

Go for it and take your pets with you.

Not a MH I know but we used to take a cat with us on a narrow boat. One day she got distracted by something in the hedge and off she went. Never saw her again. It's always going to be a risk taking a cat out on journeys. Unlike a dog they have a habit of ignoring you.

Please tell us more as your obviously well experienced with this...do you let them loose on site or what? Toilet arrangements etc...etc......

I line our shower with thick plastic and store her travel basket in there and the covered cat loo just fits beside it.
Keen to hear ideas for letting cats out though. I knew my previous cat would come when called. This one won't.

I bought a harness for our cat but I couldn't stop laughing every time I put it on her. She either fell over on the spot or tummy rubbed the ground, never got any better. I think it must be a reaction like mum holding her by the scruff etc.
I did take her away once and she was not happy at all everytime we opened the door she freaked out as it was always different scenery, layby, airfield, street and finally home which really upset her I think she thought that she was having hallucinations as she walked in at home, rumble rumble moving and noise then the vista out of the door had changed repeat, change repeat change and finally repeat then everything was back to normal. She still goes into the van but any engine and she is off like a rocket. We leave her for a few days with a supply of food and water with the flap in the door to go out. and Daughter comes to check.

We don't have anyone close to leave her, but to be honest need to try get her used to it as prefer her to be with us. Funny, she does that belly on the floor thing when I put the harness on. My other cats weren't like this. I have a 48 hour feeder for leaving her for a night though. Haven't used it yet.

Our cat is a "house" cat and is litter trained, so is happy to say in. We have a little covered litter tray that fits in bathroom area and use a brand of litter that kills smells right away ( wife cleans it out ) so don't even know she has used the "loo" - sorted.
We do sit outside our MH with the hab door open and she will venture out to were we are sitting, but does not go more than 2/3 metres from MH. Around 95% of the time she will just sit in the door way looking out ( our old cat did the same ) and to date have had no problem in sites. When travelling she is in her own box secured to floor incase of an problem as would not want her to be hurt. She moans for about the first 10 minutes of the journey then sleeps.
