Realised after 9 months of reasonably heavy van use (we've used 1/3 of the use over the previous 5 years) that the toilet cassette could do with a a clean due to calcium deposits...

Is it as simple as thetford duo and done?

Or is there a cheaper funster alternative (white vinegar)?

I take mine to pieces then jet wash the inside, it removes some of the stuff inside but not all of it.

I use a disinfectant each trip to ensure cleansed fully, fill to brim leave for a while and then air dry, works for me

I use white wine vinegar mixed with citric acid need to put it in hot.

If its not too bad a dishwasher tablet & hot water works quite well.

The issue with us is the downtime between trips away can be sub one day at this time of year so no need or time for that.

I'll try the dishwasher tab method, thanks Lenny HB and resort to white wine vinegar if doesn't do the trick. Didn't want to spend on detergents when we already have 10l of white wine vinegar and hundreds of dishwasher tabs (thanks costco)

Dismantled my C200 Thetford cassette, added lots of citric acid in warm water and soaked everything inside the main body.

Lubed and reassembled and nice and shiny clean for another year.

I took some photos and a video to aid the task when assembling inside.

I also discovered that the level sensor float was still in place, but wouldn’t float due to scale. Citric acid descaled it nicely so floats once again.

This is the blade mechanism retainer:

The float that I thought was lost.

After cleaning don’t forget to spray the seals with silicon. I have the special Thetford stuff just because it is a small can and so handy to keep in the van where I can find it again.

We've got Thetford C500 cassette and the seal was leaking. Before taking it all apart, I tried a double-dose of the Thetford Cassette Cleaner with hot water, left for 24hrs, but tbh it didn't appear to make any difference.

So it was a case of taking it all apart and just giving it a thorough clean with an old dishwashing brush (thrown away afterwards!), hot water and detergent. I used a little screwdriver to gently remove any scale.

Once sparkling clean, I replaced both seals, sprayed with silicone spray, and put it all back together again - and it works - hubby very impressed! 😊

Btw, when you remove the mechanism by rotating the central round section, I found if you fill the cassette half full of hot water it makes it much easier to turn it.
