Hi everyone, This is a planned trip this year. I’ve just had a conversation with a German gentleman here in Finistere who tells me that the Roma are a real problem on the Med coast and up and down the A75 to Clermont-Ferrand, where they do ‘hit and run’s’ back to their pik..e sites on the coast. I know we have issues here, but does anyone know anything about this specific issue. Cheers.

While I do not believe in the gassing stories I certainly do believe in only staying on aires where I feel comfortable and I have never, ever, felt comfortable on a motorway aire so its a definite no from me. I do though believe in Roma people (Other types are available) taking any opportunity to profit themselves at the expense of others whether it be your watch, handbag, wallet, camera, car or motorhome contents having witnessed it myself. To call such warning scaremongering is, I my view veery unhelpful and may encourage others to needlessly put themselves at risk. I know there are those who say they have used motorway aires as stopovers for years and years without incident, was that just luck? or does to prove you are totally safe in such places. all you have to do is ask yourself, "do you feel lucky"? You could walk around the tourist spots in Rome or other big cities with your wallet hanging out of your back pocked and not have it stolen, would you be the lucky one where several others have lost theirs. It'a all about managing risk, your a fool of you do not.

Come to think of it we haven’t heard of a gassing for some time now, usually get at least 3-4 a year….

If there is no evidence (which isnt over 6 years old from a German in Brittany) then I think "Scaremongering" is rather apt.

But remember, just because I, and maybe some others, think it is scaremongering, it doesnt mean it isnt true.

Appreciate your views, German George was I believe warning me that the bad guys were using aliases and ‘scull duggery’ to get access in the dead of night. He didn’t mention the g word or intimate the use. He just warned us that the Itinerants were still out there taking advantage at vulnerable times and places. He was a nice guy, honest!
