In Spain a motorhome of up to 3500 is classed as a car. So, if they can fit in a space for a car, or a space specially created for them, they can't be said to be illegally parked. Even overnight, if they don't open side windows, put blocks, etc. etc.

Unless there's a special (local authority) regulation passed to say otherwise.

Caravans don't come under these regs. They will always be camping. Even if hooked to the tow car they can't possibly fit in one space.

And they can afford to stay on campsites.
There should be a 7m limit.
How do you find a campsite in December travelling down through France? There are very few open if any at all.
Just because they have a big van does not mean they are very rich they may have used their savings to buy it šŸ¤”

Motorhomes which are the size of single decker buses are also a pita
They often tow cars too .
Big is bad
Could you please explain why as long as they only take up one space there is nothing wrong with that and not everyone wants to drive a van conversionšŸ¤”

At the end of the day it ought to be about common sense, if the aire is full, it's no caravans or trailers, if it's empty what does it matter? And if it's an aire that charges, it's more money for the commune.
But common sense and live and let live seems to have gone nowadays. :(

On and off for many years.
Could the increase in caravan and car combo be because people are getting older and once the dreaded C1 medical is in sight a car and caravan combo doesn't require the medical?

Having been used to the system of Aires they just continue to use them?

The problem arises when it isnā€™t full when the tugger arrives but later when it fills up; you can bet your bottom dollar that the tugger would not be inclined to move to free up one of the spaces.
Common sense would say, never take up two spaces then that problem never materialises.

Stayed at a Pass etape aire at Sedan, France the other day. Sign stated no caravans and dogs must be on leads. Belgium couple with a caravan and three dogs roaming the place. He did sport a natty Hilter type tache. Oddly, tow cars were allowed, but tags axles were not.

What's the problem with caravans parking on an Aire, I know it's supposed to be against the rules but why ?
Would think most car and caravan combinations would take up two bays..mind you many inconsiderate motorhomes sometimes do..BUSBY.

Well you've assumed something that size only takes up one space .
In my experience that would be unusual

Just back from three weeks in France, and noticed people overnighting on aires in cars, one arrived late and left early and parked on the grass so not using a pitch. Another polish car had a family of four sleeping in it overnight. Neither of them were preventing anyone else from accessing the aire.

19 month year 18000 miles UK, Ireland, France, Spain, Germany, Italy. Campsites and off Grid.
I've only come across caravans a couple of times in Aires. Did have a couple of young German girls in a tent box on top of a land rover in a motorhome car park in built up city centre of Ljubljana which I thought was brave.

More annoying I find is cars just using motorhome spaces just to park. Annoying when there are car parking spaces elsewhere and limited motorhome spaces
