Here is a part map of Dusseldorf that shows the exhibition hall location. To the north and north-west of the hall are the two large car parks, P1 and P2, that lie just south of the major road coloured light brown on the map. The address of the motorhome and caravan parking area is given as 16 Lohauser Dorfstrasse, which is the road highlighted in blue. The large field to the south of it is the camping field. The entrance is adjacent to house No 16, where the red pointer is on the map.

We are not going but some good friends of ours are and, after they bought their camping tickets (with some difficulty), we had to put our heads together to work out where the camping field is from the information given. The organisers don't make it easy! Perhaps anyone here who went last year can confirm the camping location I've described. Our friends initially looked at booking P1 or P2 but found there was a time restriction that ruled out overnight stays IIRC.

I was planning on staying down by the river but unfortunately full so went to the Stelplatz set up near the town, next to a garage and a tram station that takes you into town in a few minutes. Plenty of space with water and waste empty but I don’t think any electric is available.

Here is the current situation as regards official parking availability for motorhomes (Reisemobile) and caravans (Wohnanhanger). Shutzenplatz Lohausen is the events field off Lohauser Dorfstrasse that I referred to in my previous post. Unfortunately it doesn't say what the parking time restrictions are in P1 and P2 but I know they didn't suit our friends, who will be staying two or three nights for two full days in the exhibition.

The 'Weiterer Stellplaze' note on the copied page above leads to a web page that gives alternative motorhome/caravan parking if the main areas are fully booked.

Edit: Here is the link to that additional camping referred to in Weiterer Stellplatze:

I arrived yesterday at the Lohausen site, only to find out that there is no water filling point!:((n) Water available apparently at P1 but long queues so back on the autobahn for a 35km round trip to find a petrol station with a tap. The Lohausen field is excellent is you're a plane spotter who likes the smell of aviation fuel! At least the planes drown out the motorway noise!
If anyone has photo requests for any model, I'm happy to oblige and put the pictures here.

Our friends also arrived yesterday to find the same lack of any water point on the large pop-up camping site. So much for German efficiency. Fortunately they had filled up at the Canterbury P&R before getting the ferry. They don't usually tavel with a full water tank so made a lucky decision. They are also unimpressed with being on the end of the main runway with jets coming in every few minutes. Lots of complaints from the campers, apparently. Let's hope the show is worth it.

Probably way too late now, but there is a campsite on the opposite side of the river, 15 min cycling to the exhibition and the centre of the city.
But they do at least have water and a dump station, although I suspect they (not unreasonably) would charge for use for non residents

We've never gone without water and elsan points, in fact it's normally in abundance along with thousands of mini sample elsan fluids free. The jets are part of the atmosphere, the first ones normally roar into your dreams about 6am. :D

The whole parking set up on P1 normally has a great vibe, with lots of individual parties happening. You will enjoy the show, it's awesome, with nothing like it in the UK. At least they provide parking, unlike our National show, which, given the popularity of our hobby in the UK, is in my opinion a bit of a national embarrassment. A motorhome show that doesn't allow overnighting, or when they do it's a token gesture on a bit of gravel. I wrote an article about the two shows once, I can't locate the words, but the pic should give you an Idea :D

If Motorhome shows were a salad.

We used the alternative if the camping at the show was full and it was brilliant.
We are now on the messe camping p1 and it's very loud being on the flight path. It's fine but I think if we ever do it again we will stay on the offsite alternative.
Depends what you want, it's still fabulous you get to camp at the show.

I don't hear the planes during the day while at the show. By the time I've done the show, which likely means walking miles, climbing in and out of hundreds of vans, and having a beer or two on the way back to the van, I'm knackered and a Jet won't wake me. Well that 6am one might. :D

Because of other commitments, we did not think we would make it to the Caravan Salon this year. However, a last minute change of plans enabled us to catch the ferry from Hull to Rotterdam on Wednesday evening, then to drive to Dussledorf yesterday.

We managed to get a one night pitch on P1 for yesterday evening (Thursday), but could not stay longer as the website said fully booked. The journey from Rotterdam to Dussledorf was obviously much quicker than our usual route from Calais. We arrived at 16.00 hoping to blag our way in rather than wait until the scheduled 19.00 arrival time. (On the date of your departure you are required to leave by 19.00.) On arrival it seemed the the parking area for MoHo’s was about half full! We were given the choice of paying 10 Euros to park up early or come back at 19.00! Just paid up, as we were keen to head off into Dussledorf for the evening.

We had a splendid evening meal sitting outside on a warm evening at the restaurant “Vente”, about an easy 10 minute walk from where the complimentary Shuttle Bus drops you off…..but you are spoilt for choice for good places to eat and drink.

As for the Caravan Salon ….. I think they are losing the plot! On our last visit 2 years ago there was much to do at the camping area, with mobile and pop-up places on site to eat, drink and socialise. These no longer seem to be provided….or at least we could not find them. Also, on this occasion we did not see another UK registered MoHo. As for the Show itself, today seemed to be very quiet and no where near the number of visitors on our last visit. I did get some very useful technical advice I was seeking on the Thule, Gaslow and Thetford trade stands, but I may well have got the same help at the NEC without the hassle of the staff on the stands obviously being German speakers, mostly with a reasonable command of English, whilst trying to be helpful had understandingly some difficulty with explaining technical aspects in English. As ever there was a vast selection of MoHo’s to see. Obviously many were brands either not imported to the UK or with very limited UK dealer support. I came away feeling that anyone seeking to look at options for a new MoHo to buy with UK support, would probably be just as well served at the NEC, unless seeking a very expensive “premium” MoHo or a vehicle for very specialist needs.

One thing which surprised me was to find how little enthusiasm there seems to be for MoHo converters to embrace the advantage of Lithium technology for leisure battery use and (for example) move away from absorption (gas burning) fridge/freezers to compressor-only options.

Next….a few weeks exploring parts of Germany we have not visited. 🤞

Forgot to mention……. Found the Hymer stand really interesting. Not, however, for the new models but for some examples they were displaying from the Hymer Museum at Bad Waldsee. This is the one I liked most - a 1959 model….. rear engined and difficult to distinguish the front from the back as you approach from the side….. with a Sun Deck on top, reached from a ladder inside. Really ‘cool’!!!

Well the lottery win didn't come in - again!
