We are currently on a rally in the Southwest.

The site has about 200 pitches and about 30 of those occupied by ralliers.
There are a further 5-10 pitches being occupied by no attendees to the rally.

We have been informed by locals in 'the know' that bookings at the 'pointy end' of the country are dramatically down this year, no doubt in part as a result of the various owners ramping up prices.

I enquired with the site I'm on to see if there was an opportunity to run a rally here. Despite the fact that that the site is 15-18% occupied right now I was told that the site has no vacancies for further rallies. This is for NEXT year!

We’ve just got back from Highlands End at West Bay which we like but it’s by no means cheap. Thanks to Wombles who highlighted an unheard of discount we got a good deal on a grass pitch. Even better on arrival as we’d been upgraded to gravel for some reason.

It was really empty despite the glorious weather and the discount. Very odd. They’ve just bought the little campsite on the steep slope at Eype and terraced it. Starting to put in some very, very fancy pods.

We’ve just got back from Highlands End at West Bay which we like but it’s by no means cheap. Thanks to Wombles who highlighted an unheard of discount we got a good deal on a grass pitch. Even better on arrival as we’d been upgraded to gravel for some reason.

It was really empty despite the glorious weather and the discount. Very odd. They’ve just bought the little campsite on the steep slope at Eype and terraced it. Starting to put in some very, very fancy pods.

Agree that those sort of discounts are unheard of in recent years at Highlands End - good weather & a gravel pitch sounds lovely!

These two campsites aren't ever cheap but the facilities, views & locations are fab so worth it for some of us as a treat - we won't ever be able to get prices as low as basic rallies on these though even off season - I have tried!

2 adults, 1 large van, with electric, 2 nights £71 - Park strictly, Lovely site with great facilities (apparently) went for a run, came back mulled around, went to the showers, closed for cleaning, went back showered in van.
Sunday Morning, woke up, went for a training ride, came back, no time to shower, off by 12...

Weekend just gone, scooter in, Bike in, Temporary holiday site in Darley Dale peak district- £11 per night, no electric, park where you like but give it 6 meters, here's a few takeaway menus, here's a list of things to see and do, and you can watch the steam train if you like. Run Saturday, own shower, scoot out and visit a magnitude of places... Wake up Sunday, 2 hour bike, come back, shower in van, another scoot out to Chatsworth house & Bakewell, as long as you're off by 3pm as it's the last day of the Temp Holiday Site, no worries, super friendly marshals, and an absolute bargain even if those of us that have been around a while still think £11 is expensive.

Same club, different experiences, but it pays to choose and mix it up in my opinion.

Easter will be another Temp Holiday site at about £11 per night.

Then of course there is the CL's that can still be found for £15 without electric, but the price of some of these is through the roof.

I think people are only just starting to understand that rip off covid prices have finished.

To contrast. 2 weeks so far in Portugal and we managed 12 days with no cost Aires - some with electric and toilets. All with water and dumping for free.

Now in the Algarve in a lovely site virtually on the beach ( 5 mins walk through the trees) 10 quid a night. £8 if you don't use electric. Showers and WC 1 euro if you need/want to use them. water, dumping and wifit included.

Thats why we mostly do Europe. (Plus the weather!)

A couple of nights in Cambridgeshire last week, CL, hardstanding, no EHU £10 a night.
We are finalising the planning for a trip at the end of the month to Scotland- Fife, up the east coast to Peterhead. Thought we might like to visit Stonehaven. CAMC site would be £39 a night, not bank holiday. Not paying that for a wander around the harbour, a good chippy, good cake shop and a coop nearby. Most of our planned stops so far are aires and CLs. Most expensive is £20 a night, but most far less.

We have overnighted at Stonehaven before for the princely sum of £0.00 literally 40 metres from the CAMC gate. Get there early afternoon and plenty of spaces available even in the summer holidays.

Anyone considering Incleborough fields mentioned above should really stay at the C&CC site literally next door at Cromer (the sites border each other, 5 min walk between them). We've got under £25 a night on bank holiday (for 2 of us) at the other club and for those who qualify for OAP rates, it's cheaper still. Starting at £40/ni at the club that literally borders the other clubs field, and in reality when we priced it up on Bank holiday they wanted £60/night!

On a non Bank holiday it's even cheaper. I can't see why anyone would pay £40/night when the hardstandings even next door with Electric are half that.

Mad thing is when we booked the C&CC site, we did check availability at CAMC and they'd sold out that weekend. I don't get it, do people not know about the other club?

I don't think they are the same club, CMHC don't do THS at Darley Dale or anywhere else.

I agree with this. Costs as much for our 3 week break when you add dog stuff as 3 months of UK touring. We can't afford to take > 3 weeks a year. Once the dog has his new European PP we'll take Ferry next time. But we don't want to stress the dog on a Ferry this year given he's an AHC dog this year.

France is great (if you are retired). It's a luxury for us, but the £10-15 THS and other clubs sites in summer (we're booked on one site at £70 for 3 nights on a bank hol weekend) are not a luxury.

Yes Paul haganap, that is a reasonable budget compared with what some spend.

However, one can go lower - we did the last 3 month trip to Greece with only two payable stops at €10, but rebated off the meal, which is why we went there from previous eating experience.

Of course, the ferry crossing Ancona-Patras cost a lot of the equivalent of 90 days at €15pn, but had we used campsites that would have put another 50% on the trip cost, which saving was however enjoyed on many excellent meals, both in restaurants, simple tavernas and meals from local ingredients, care of creative cooking by Basia.

So, we probably spend the same money, but have beautiful parking spots by the sea, at edge of small fishing harbours or on a Greek hill-top -one of our favourite hills, with a view across Tuscany is free parking with full MH facilities, just behind an excellent restaurant.

We do similar in France and Germany, and even in UK, mostly northern bit.

Different styles, but one does not have to use paid sites to enjoy a MH holiday - that is my point.

Not for us by a massive margin, x2 dogs and associated costs, in UK use cheap CLs, cheap/free stopovers, Pubstops etc etc obviously depends on fuel as well, we live hundreds of miles from any cheap ferry port plus when you're still working the UK is so much easier to tour.

That's easy to say when you live only a few miles from probably the cheapest ferry in GB and travel in a £100,000+ M/H with ALL the facilities of home BUT saying that, some people would be nervous being park on a glorified carpark, sometimes inches from other foreign vehicles, free to come and go at all hours of the day or night, with such an expensive vehicle.

It could get bashed by a departing uninsured vehicle who could be down the road before you are out of bed?
Or stolen (however good your alarms) while your visiting in town?

As a single Oldie who has seen and enjoyed, when younger and fitter, much of Europe ( and the World) with a much cheaper vehicle, I think now, I will pay my average of £12 per night and have more security and less worry by using a campsite and the free pass on the English Bus Network.

By the way, when you are working out how cheap your holidays are, are you including the depreciation and VAT on your £100,000+ vehicle?

Whatever suits you now but in the past it appears you also toured abroad so that's what others are doing.

What difference does that make? It would deprecate at the same rate when used in the UK! Do I detect a bit of a green eye monster?

Such a pain touring in the UK these days. I can't be doing with trawling the internet looking for places to book at silly prices. And by the looks of it it's only going to get harder. Sooner just get off the euro tunnel and think head this way today see where I end up.

These threads always seem to turn into a funny “do it as cheaply as possible or you’re wasting your money” type of thing, almost a badge of honour to spend as little as possible. I’m sure most of us do a mixture.

Some people do it because they have to of course, some because they want to.

I don’t mind staying in a dusty carpark for free en route to somewhere else but I also don’t mind paying if it’s somewhere I particularly like. Some free or cheap places in France and Spain are lovely as well of course.

I don’t like Germany particularly (tin hat ready).
