Can you insure a motorhome in storage if you don't have a driver's liscence?

to begin with and without a licence that isn't going to happen.
It si perfectly legal to insure a vehicle without a licence. --------just that the insurance scum will not do it.
Fleet vehicles are insured any driver by the owning company.
& the 'owning company' doesn't have a licence does it.

Here you go in one

It doesn't need one, it's insured under a specialised insurance policy rather than an ordinary motoring policy just like hire cars.
Last company I worked for had a small fleet (6) of vans, all registered in the company name and insured under a company named policy for any authorised (by the boss) driver.

you dont say how old you are if under 25 youll struggle to get any motor home insurance let alone for a 7,5 tonne lorry we tried to get a quote for my son several years ago it was over 6k for a vw van

It was always my belief you can't insure a vehicle if you aren't the registered keeper.

You can, you just have to declare it. I bought my daughter a car and to get extra benefits (5 years warranty instead of 3, free breakdown cover) I had to buy it on finance, make 3 months payments, them pay it off. My daughter insured the vehicle with me as the registered keeper.

Sorry looks like I started something here, the registered keeper does not necessarily have to be the owner, fleet vehicles can be insured to individuals, named drivers or specific vehicles to specific drivers whether owned or leased. Various companies choose how to insure their fleet considering their organisational requirements. As for using it for test, if it is a truck conversion and has not had major alterations to the structure/running gear, there should be no reason why not (it would of course need checking) www.gov.co.uk /DVLA could help with this. As for how to get to the test centre the person who instructed them would of course accompany them. (with L Plates)

Hi all, thank you for all the replies. I didn't realise there were replies beyond the first one as I didn't receive any further email notifications.

I have made some preliminary calls today.

I started with Cluebcare Insurance. They won't cover a vehicle in storage without a licence and they didn't think that was possible, but suggested Adrian Flux.

I rang Adrian Flux next and they have given me a quote of just over £530 with a £300 excess to cover the full value of the vehicle for accidental damage, fire and theft in storage without a driver's liscence - so it is indeed possible to do. That's for a year's cover - obviously I won't need that long but unfortunately won't be able to refund any unused months. As it was a "live quote" I had to pay for it upfront or go through the entire application again and get a new quote from them if I were to call back after looking elsewhere. However I was assured that I can cancel the policy before it starts and get a full refund with no charges whatsoever.

I'm ok with the quote to have peace of mind. I'm under a time pressure as the landlords want the vehicle gone quickly so it doesn't cause damage to their drive. The storage place can take it from this Wednesday, so ideally I'm looking to cover it straight away and Adrian Flux can do so. However, I've just been looking at reviews for Adrian Flux online and they are not good. Trustpilot give them an excellent rating with nearly 12,000 positive reviews, however I don't trust Trustpilot as I have left negative reviews for companies through them and have had them not appear. Negative reviews are there, but are they showing all of them and if not this gives a false representation. The reviews for Adrian Flux on www.reviews.co.uk are only 3.5stars with an awful lot of bad reviews out of the 200 or so reviews there. Someone suggested Lancaster Insurance - they are scored even lower with even worse reviews. So I'm not sure what to think. I'm leaning towards continuing to look, hopefully finding an alternative and then cancelling before the policy starts, but my time and options may be very limited.

What's people's general experience with using Adrian Flux? I'm still awaiting the details of the policy to be emailed through an hour after the phonecall, which doesn't fill me with confidence. I want to read through the fine print. Are ALL insurance companies reviewed fairly badly or are there actually ones with a good track record (and this is reviewed consistently beyond sites like Trustpilot).

Someone asked me why I am choosing to do this. I don't really want to reveal my personal circumstances at this point as that is private, but this is something I have given a great deal of thought to and it does seem realistic and ideal for me at this time in life. Just because there are a few issues to work out initially doesn't mean it makes it unfeasible ;), but I appreciate your concern. :)

a few dissatisfied customers out of thousands leave a negative review. I think you are worrying over nothing

It was in reference to a friend or relative insuring it. If they aren't the registered keeper they can't insure it.
Not necessarily true, I am the registered keeper of our motorhome, have been for almost 10 years for all that time vehicle has been insured in my partners name.

Yeah I think you guys are right. On balance the reviews are still more good than bad and they are still better than the alternatives. I rang them back and spoke to a very friendly and helpful woman for over an hour about my concerns, asked every question I could think of to avoid any hidden charges, unexpected nasty surprises, clauses etc. The only reason the info hadn't come through to me right away is because the first person I spoke to had misspelled my email address. The conversation has reassured me that I've done as much as I can to check them out. I don't think there's anything more I can do, if they're going to screw me over, they're going to screw me over! The place I will be leaving the truck is about as secure as they come, it's well reviewed and they've never had any problems, so it's unlikely I will need to make a claim, it's really for peace of mind covering the "what ifs".

Thank you for the advice on emptying the water tanks and getting those little dehumidifier blocks - never really thought those things did much but perhaps they are better than nothing! Insurance covers mice damage, I'm not going to put traps or poison down having had pet rodents, but I will perhaps "visit" the truck about once a month and keep an eye on things - perhaps the people who run the storage would even be willing to do so. I am sure they will be okay with moving it in and out periodically to keep things lubricated and yes that's not a bad idea, perhaps I can safely leave a key with them. I will check tomorrow. Overall feeling much better about the situation, so thank you everyone who replied with helpful input :).

It was me that posted the link to Lancaster, wasn't recommending them , just a link to show it was possible, if you do want a recommendation, try nfu mutual.

Can you actually stay in the vehicle on a storage site (cossoa)????

Don't think the intention is to stay in the vehicle on the storage site - storage only required for 6 months before they continue with their plans.

When we stored our touring caravan on a Cassoa Gold site, they needed to see my insurance docs BEFORE they would store the vehicle, and then every renewal date afterwards I would just scan and e mail the cert of insurance for their records. Its to cover the van if the whole place went up in fire or the vehicle was stolen.
Adrian Flux have never been anywhere near competitive for us over the last 5 years.
I would suggest ringing an independent insurance broker as they have the entire market to research including many specialist underwriters.
Try Googling A Plan insurance Ltd to make a start.
Good luck
Les

the solution to the insurance issue is have a friend or older family member with a licence insure the vehicle in storage for you
Technically incorrect. The friend or older family member would not have an insurable interest so they CANNOT insure it.

NFU have a business policy even though this is not a business. It can be insured for fire perils & liability. The latter is required is case there is an accident with the motorhome. The business policy would cover the fire perils and liability for a situation where the RTA does not apply. All local NFU Mutual officies through their agents will provide full details.
