Can You Buy Hummus in French Supermarkets?

Agree on the tahini I don't think it's really hummus without it

I had tried making Hummus, following various recipes, on many occasions during the ten odd years I was a veggie and wasn't impressed with the results. It wasn't until many years later that I came across a great blog on the creation of "The Best Hummus Ever" that I discovered Tahini and what an essential ingredient it is, not looked back since...

Just to add, if you like home made Hummus, then you should definitely try making home made Babba Ganoush...

Cheers

I just looked up Vla (and a recipe to make it). Might try some in a day or two and see if the grandson will eat it. He is very fussy foodwise.

Lidl had a hand blender plus assorted accessories a while back. I bought two, one for home and one for the van. I like smooth soups!
In the average Dutch supermarket you can buy at least 10 variations of Vla, so many different flavours, I love gele Vla met echte slagroom, go for it lol😇😎

He won't eat cream - unless it is that awful squirty cream on hot chocolate!

Whilst not exactly on point regarding hummus, my better half makes a delicious dish using baked aubergine, garlic, harissa paste and feta served with couscous containing chopped spring onion. Served also with piles of Greek yoghurt. Yummmmy!

The tahini is packed! (And other stuff). :)

With you on all that nice stuff. Have you tried Patak’s Brinjal pickle? Our absolute favourite.
Have a great time!
I'll have a look for that. :)

Granddaughter allergic to sesame so inspite of recent posts I’ve been very interested in non tahini ideas!

You can buy it in French supermarkets, it’s often not displayed in the area with couscous , grated carrot etc. Only in bigger supermarkets too.

From memory it’s often found in a chilled cabinet where they have prepared fish and prawn, no idea why !
Interesting. I have never been able to find hummus in French supermarkets. This maybe why!

Not a bad substitute but not exactly the same! This recipe is a Slimming World one but avoids tahini and uses yoghurt instead:

Ingredients

  • 400g can chickpeas, drained
  • 2 garlic clove, crushed
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice, plus extra to taste
  • 2 tbsp fat-free natural Greek-style yogurt
  • Pinch of smoked paprika or cayenne pepper (optional)

Method

  1. Put the chickpeas, garlic, lemon juice and yogurt into a food processor and pulse until fairly smooth. Season to taste, add more lemon juice to taste and sprinkle with smoked paprika or cayenne pepper if you want a bit of extra spice.

We are aiming to find some local cheeses on this trip. :) Main objective is to find some unpasteurised Camembert which from what I've read is available from a few outlets. There are also some cheeses from Brittany made by monks which I'm hoping to find. 🍕🧀
There are lots of "lait cru"cheeses available in mot supermarkets.

Just took delivery of one of these to replace the stick blender...

At 200w it's more than capable of making super creamy Hummus within minutes. I know as it was tested within minutes of being delivered :ROFLMAO:

The "Pots" are perfectly sized to turn one Tin of Chickpeas into Hummus....

Marinara Sauce next for tonight's Pizza 🍕

Cheers

That looks good and 200W won't tax the typical inverter if off-grid.

Yes, very impressed to be honest....

Not much more space than a boxed Stick Blender.
Not too heavy.
Actually quicker than a std size food processor at making Hummus.
Simple clean up afterwards.

Going to test it out while away, I'm thinking home made Tagliatelle with an authentic Carbonara.

Walnut or other nut Pesto.

Bannoffie Pie 🥧

Pea and Mint Soup 🍲 😋

Might even try homemade Tahini with it (although this will push it's limits), if I can find some sesame seeds for a reasonable price out there :ROFLMAO:

Cheers

And the answer to the original question is:

Yes they do!

In a refrigerated cabinet next to the fruit and vegetable section in the Super U at Cléder, Brittany.

Many thanks for all the responses. We're still going to try and make it ourselves though. :)

I made the Vla, very quick and easy even though I got interrupted at a crucial stage and ended up with a few lumps.

Almost needless to say the Grandson refused to even try it but Martin and I are fans.
