we are self sufficient off grid. We have 350watts of solar on the roof and 500amp hours of battery bank. I run 2 laptops and phones and tablets off 12v adaptors and a cpap machine overnight. The power we use is constantly topped up in daylight by the solar or we would only last a week or 10 days off grid

(Really for Richard Ann, there's now a 12v usb-type electric toothbrush charger. Ours works well. Apologies if you already knew this.)

If your mains sockets are the popular CBE or Berker types, and you would rather that they were 12V sockets, it's easy to swap the mains 3-pin sockets for 12V ones - either Hella or cigarette-lighter types are available. They fit in the same backbox.

However you will definitely need to run 12V wiring to them, either from the battery via fuses, or from some spare ways on your 12V distribution/fusebox. Don't use the mains wiring that's in there already.

An alternative to wiring through the central distribution/fusebox is to install another 6 or 12-way fusebox connected to the battery (via a big fuse, maybe 30A). Then run each circuit from its own fuse in the fusebox. This particular fusebox type has both positive and negative connections, and you could run 2-core 12V wire to each socket from the fusebox.

ok thanks for all the advice, what about an inverter that is then plugged into EHU outside the van, also can any one suggest a good sparky for vans in the essex area ??
generally speaking inverters are NOT waterproof
