Hi and welcome to the Fun!
:welc:

Portugal is probably one of the easiest countries in which to obtain a Pet Passport. Several Funsters have obtained Pet Passports there at low cost and with no need to register your dog on a national database. Portugal also administers 3-year rabies vaccinations.

France is generally difficult due to various misinterpretations of legislation since Br*x*t. Spain not difficult but can be harder to obtain 3-year rabies vaccinations. Germany generally fairly easy. Belgium varies from vet to vet but we know of one in particular in Bruges who issues Pet Passports to Brits without problem:

I got my dog one in RoI too.
Ferry from Cairnryan to Larne with no checks or AHC, then called into the animal hospital vets in letterkenny who did the EU pp for 30 euro.
Existing rabies vaccine info transferred over.

Got Pip’s EU passport in Belgium.
Make sure the dates are correct, the date of reading the chip must be before the Rabies jab, so if Vet is transferring from an AHC check the dates with them before they write anything!

Done ours in Ireland in May, while on holiday. €40. No need for a Irish address.
If you enter via ROI (Dublin, Rosslare) you need an AHC. If you enter via NI (Larne, Belfast) no need for an AHC to enter NI. And no need for one at the NI/ROI border either.

Same day as rabies vacc is acceptable as well, not essential its before. But it can't be after.

There are a few vets in Bourges. Was this the one I have on my list - Alexandra Gaumont, 44 Rue Barbès? If so, I'll take it off my list. Did they say why they're no longer issuing Pet Passports to Brits?

Are you going to travel to or towards Murcia in Spain? If so I can pm you details of a vet we used with a 3 year rabies jab at a very reasonable cost.

We got ours in July from Lieve in Bruges. We also got a new 3 year rabies despite dog already having had her 3 year jag in February. She charged €94 including worming.

Used it for first time this month and all ok

Who from, I wonder? She was doing nothing illegal.

I will take her off my list of French vets anyway.

If you are going to Portugal it is cheap and vets don’t have a problem doing it. Got ours 2 years ago and as we won’t be back in time next year for renewal, vet has just re done the rabies jab for €15 euros. First passport all in, including registration on the Portuguese system so if the dog was ever lost it is registered with the authorities and total cost originally , vets fee, rabies jab , passport and registration was €55 euros.
While here at the vets they are going to clean his teeth and check all of them (uk vets quoted £300) only in vets for 3 hours and cost is €80 euros plus €10 euros for antibiotics, which uk vets won’t give. In the UK we are ripped off by Vets.
Advice if you are in europe get your vet jobs done for good prices by excellently qualified vets, our Portuguese vet is Irish but lives in Portugal and speaks both languages.

They want an EU pet passport. An AHC would of course be required to travel to the country where the passport is to be obtained.

I'm glad we got ours when we did as the situation over there seems to be one of total confusion! We called in at https://debascule.be/ in Ypres to get a rabies booster which was given no question, but during conversation stated that they won't do passports anymore as vets are being given massive fines for issuing them, all to do with the 'requiring an address for registration'

There seems to be very little, if any, logic behind these declarations. Just who is issuing 'massive fines' to vets? Surely if there is a fine there has to be an actual law forbidding the supposed offence. So where is this actual law?

Does the lovely lady vet in Bruges who happily provides Pet Passports to Brits receive a fine for each one she issues? Of course not!

Belgium requires dogs to be registered on their DogID database only if they are going to be in the country for more than six months. This is hidden away in an obscure section of the DogID website:

Back in September 2021 ericonabike reported the following conversation with a vet in Bruges:

In other words, there is nothing to prohibit the issuing of Pet Passports to Brits but a group of Belgian vets think that it shouldn't be allowed based on the requirements for resident dogs.

We had our pet passport done in Ireland. Went over via Cairnryan. No passports or AHC needed. Easy and don't need an address in Ireland.

My understanding is that a dog on an EU passport is not legal travelling with a human UK resident. Technicalities I know naught.
The "system" is flawed and subject to "pays yer money take year chance".
Recently met a guy in France a few weeks ago, 2 dogs EU passports from Hungary no address no questions. Rabies detail transferred.
I'm in Italy now. Another £250 for local vet and 40 odd euros for tapeworm tab home.
For the money I can do without a jobsworth getting back and my dog empounded.
I know I can do it cheap, but I prefer not to risk the law being applied.
It's like the AHC and I know of 2 cases with people not travelling to EU because of mistakes and in the form.
Sorry but just my bit.

Also had our vet in Mirambeau (France) tell us our two need to go onto the I-CAD database, however when checking the I-CAD info page it states that if bringing in an animal to France it needs to be registered on I-CAD after 8 days (If a permanent resident) but not if you are a second home owner, we aren't but have our base in Montendre as our official address for French Bank, postal etc. The dogs must also stay over 90 days ??? It's just a badly thought out system in my view. Bit of scaremongering to stop the issue of Euro PP maybe?

The law (the Article 22 that gets referred to in the 'Br*x*t statement on the I-cad website) just states that animals must be registered with I-cad if their stay in France will be longer than 90 days.

Same day as rabies vacc is acceptable as well, not essential its before. But it can't be after.

Very important to get this right.

I was caught out by a French Vet who entered the date of Issue of the EU Pet Passport (FR) as the date of Reading of the Chip = not correct;.

The requirement is very easily and clearly confirmed (in hindsight !) on the LeShuttle UK website - have a look for the "Pet Compliance Checklist" web page and skim down to the "Microchip" section where you will see - in Bold -

"When the vet is completing your pet’s official travel documents, make sure the date of implantation or date of reading of the microchip is the same date as, or before, the rabies vaccination."

The LeShuttle online website page can be found at:
eurotunnel.com/uk/travelling-with-us/travelling-with-your-pet/checklist/

The Abbeywell Vets' AHC for the journey clearly showed the same date in both sections on page 4 (which related to a 3-year UK Booster vaccination given the previous year when the microchip was correctly read by the UK Vet at the same time).

The lady at (Inbound) Pet Reception (LeShuttle Calais) advised the vet "must enter the same date as the Vaccination date for the date of Reading"; The EU Passport was refused for entry into the UK as "incorrectly completed" (now been replaced by French Vet with new [correct] EU Pet Passport), UK re-entry was made using the valid AHC !

In the (FR) EU Pet Passport do beware of the Date entry on Page 6/32 at item 2 - this is the one that matters !!

Always happy to be corrected.
The UK government website no longer contains information I had previously accepted.
I therefore don't adhere to stating the situation as illegal.
Thanks 🐕
