Camp site for London

Wish to use motorhome to see London but the site needs to be close to public transport-.There are some inside the CAZ ,do we pay on entering/leaving or for every day we camp,I know of Abbey Wood Crystal Palace and Lea Valley. Any others please especially from the north

You only pay when you enter and then leave.... unless you drive around once there.

Aldborough hall farm CL in Newbury Park. About a 20 min walk to station though which is on the Central Line Underground

Lea Valley is a good option as 2 mins from W8 bus stop. From here you can get to Edmonton Green where there are buses into central London, overground train to Liverpool Street or change at Seven Sisters for the tube. Used to live near there growing up and transport links are pretty good.

We stayed there in September and found Uber a reasonable option. Site is pretty good with a small shop, only downside was the fresh water takes ages to fill.

If you are approaching from the north try and get on the A10 as this avoids the M25. We came down from Wellingborough via Bedford, then out to A1, and crossed to A10 at Stevenage (ignore satnav andtake the Knebworth turn). Used to do this route 30 years ago and this is the easiest way.

As previously mentioned you only pay on the days you drive, and may be exempt on weekends. If unsure better to pay than receive a fine.

If you are coming down from the North then the CCC Chertsey might work, only 5 mins from M25, site is an easy 20 min walk through the town to the railway station, regular trains either direct or through Weybridge to Waterloo. Great pubs nearby, we use it when visiting our grandkids in Wimbledon.

Abbey Wood campsite is 5 mins walk from the Elizabeth Line station which will have you in central London is 20 mins.
The site is 10 mins from the M25

In terms of convenience, it's the best campsite in the London area.
Check what, if anything, you may pay by entering your number plate on the TFL ULEZ checker here

Motorhomes with Euro 6 diesel engines (typically 2015 onwards) do not pay anything.

Euro 4 onwards is £12.50 per day, you can set up an account here which means you don't have to worry about paying each time, it will be done automatically by ANPR. (You will only pay for the days that you drive)

Remember, the Dartford crossing on the M25 is also auto-tolled by ANPR.

I would strongly suggest you set up an automated account here as well, even if you 'might' only use it once every 3 years.
And put every number plate for every vehicle you or your family own on the list (no extra cost, but could save a fortune in fines)

Agree. This is a good option. Bonus is a pub either side of the bridge when you exit the site

An out of the box suggestion .... Grange Farm Thorpe le Soken (where I am organising a rally) has a train station about 10 mins walk max, with trains direct to London Liverpool St, in about 80 mins (I think) ... Im sure there must be other sites without having to drive into London itself ....

The advantage now that the Elizabeth line has opened as far as Abbey Wood is that you can go for an Indian in the capital of curry, Brick Lane, if you wish, and you are only 3 stops from Abbey Wood.

It will radically transform the area from being a bit a dormitory at the end of the line, to being a place that people want to live as they can be almost anywhere in central London faster than those who live a lot closer.

It's a long haul to the station at Marlow with the width restriction on the town bridge, and very little parking at the station.

Last time we stayed on that site we had to use a tape measure to ensure we didn't fall foul of the ex RSM with his pace stick!!

The best lines to look at are:

The Thameslink line that runs between Rainham and Luton via several central London stops

Otherwise trains runs from all 18 of the London terminals out to well beyond the M25.
Every London terminal is connected to the tube &/or overground &/or DLR system.
many have multiple connections.

Somebody could spend a while making a list of every campsite within a 15 minute walk of a London commuter station.

As an example, You could stay at the site in Ramsgate/Kent, you are 10 mins walk to the station and then 70 mins by HS2 to central London.
You are also a 20 min walk to a sandy beach and a 20 min drive to Dover/Folkestone.

Yes, but ask was convenient site from the North, we have looked , not many in easy walking distance of a mainline station, Chertsey was best we found. If there is one more suitable we would be delighted to hear, we are down again in December.

I suppose it comes down to where in the North you're traveling from? I suggested Thorpe le Soken as an example of an alternative solution and did say there are probably lots more that will provide the same 'brief', hopefully other Funsters will be able to add more options of sites with a mainline station into London within a ten minutes walk of the site.

Travelling down the A1, then A14 from Cambridge is an easy enough route if you're on the Eastern side of the 'North'. Though the distance you're travelling from Edinburgh, probably gives you lots of different route options.....

Wyatt's Covert worked for us. Close to Denham station and one bus to the station from the site in the morning on weekdays - about 30 minute train trip to Marylebone. We used Uber at the weekend and evening to get back to site from the station - not at all expensive and quick to pick us up

Did I read recently that the Abbey Wood campsite is going to close down?

Crystal Palace is closing, which is a great shame. Lease has been renewed on annual basis for a while but no more renewals.
