Cambelt - do we change it or not

I don’t think I dare ask this, and there may be price differences on vans, but what sort of price range are we looking at for a cambelt change?
See post#42 & 49

Would you mind telling me which Fiat dealer that was ?sounds like a good deal , does that include the pump?
Cheers
Adams Morley, Portsmouth, wasn't that impressed last time I used them but only place in area could get done.
Price was for cambelt kit & auxiliary belt, no water pump not recommended to change it.

Sounds very reasonable that Lenny, especially for an A class 👍

I phoned Walton Summit Truck Centre (Iveco main dealers) who are about 15mins from me. Asked a chap there if he could check for definite what engine was in ours.

He was very helpful and said if we needed anything doing give them a try and they would look after us.
Like I mentioned in an earlier post, ours was changed December just gone when we bought the Motorhome, so ok for a few years now.

Yep, I was surprised independant wanted £800 then realised because of the wheel arches couldn't get it on their lorry ramp & too big for their other ramp.
last time I used A M because I wasn't very happy they offered me a discount if I tried them again they have given me another 100 quid off the price I mentioned.

YES. My 2016 Fiat Ducato 2.3 150 new cam belt last year. 5 years old and 25,000 miles. Not worth the risk leaving it - VERY expensive if it destroys your engine!!!!!

Speaking as a mechanic i allways replace a cambelt driven water pump as part of the job, i have to guarantee my work, and the extra load of a newly tensioned belt just isnt worth the risk.

Hymer - 2016 Ducato base - 19K on the clock
Booked in for MOT / Service - is it time to change cambelt ? :cautious:
Getting opinions from friends - some say Yes due to age - others say No due to low mileage
Let your mechanic inspect it and after considering everything he will decide wheather to change it or not. If it is still looks new and low milage I think it does not warrant a change.

The difference with a car and the ducato is that fiat doesn't recommend/ stipulate a pump change.
Real data needed here. Has any one had a ducato water pump fail at any milage (and at what miles)
If it says a time and date to change, do it, it is far cheaper than a new engine.

Thank you for all your advise ... spoke to mechanic yesterday - confirmed replacing cambelt and water pump when I have the
service & MOT
Better safe than sorry -
Only thing is I forgot to ask them how much ! Still will be a surprise :whatthe:

Thanks again Funsters .... Happy Safe Travels

if you dont know the history of the belt change it, if you do know the history and it is laid up for long periods of time change it,
most of all it is cheaper to change it rather than the damage it may cause if it does snap, and in some cases the ear ache it may cause depending on whose decision it was to not change it,:giggle:

It’s not about looking at the cam belt it can look good and still fail due to age. I think you will find if you change the belt as per factory recommendation there is recourse if there is a failure, not changing the cam belt and it fails the bill will be the owners responsibility

In fact I believe from experience that belts on low miles engines age much faster than high miles per year.

When I bought a new transit in 2003 the belt change kms was 60% of the belt change miles.
It stated 120,000 kms for my new spanish vehicle due to the degradation caused by excessive heat against 120,000miles if in the UK.No idea if it is still the same?

The whole point is Fiat does not stipulate a time to replace the pump, cambelt at 5 years absolutely yes , best practice includes tensioners and bolts that are not in the replacement kit and quite often not on the bill.

I have just had mine done for a good price too. £550 for the water pump and cam belt. I rang up for a price and was quoted £550 but when I got there I was told £750, I was advised that the guy who gave me the price had made a mistake quoted and for a different van. I explained I hadn't budgeted for the £750 so I would have to leave it for now. The guy very kindly said they would honour the price of £550 so got the job done straight away. this is the first change at twenty two thousand miles I think its a must if you cant afford a new engine. Happy Camping to all

I have just been quoted £450 vat included by Paynes of bury st edmunds, so that’s £200 cheaper than fiat of bury, Jaws , sorry I couldn’t get a reply from your mechanic.

I stand corrected but am I right in saying Fiat ( certain years /model ) used ford engines thus cam chains

Last motorhome , a Fiat , had 2.2 litre 100BHP Ford engine fitted which definitely had a cam chain not belt
I never knew that, I knew Peugeot and Citroen used the Ford 2.2 engine in their vans but not Fiat.

Ive had belts on cars look like they came out the box but they had snapped.

Its not worth the risk. If you know its at least 5 years old change it.

I can confirm that our 2010 SwIft E450 FIat base had the same 2.2 Ltc 100 bhp which had a cam chain

Just had mine done on a 2012 ducato. The van had only done 5000 miles when I bought it, and even though the dealer says they change them before they sell, I wanted to be sure before we drive to Spain in September.
Cost was £520 with 10% friend discount. Very happy.
