Call Me a Cissy

Surely if everybody SORNs their van the DVLA will have even less time to deal with all the up-plate/down-plate, shake it all about platers

Me neither...its not like it's a life changing amount of money you save on tax 🤷‍♂️
I've SORN mine too!
And ,yes, it does save you a few quid.........every pound counts in this world we live in.
I can't see why you pay for road tax when your not even using the road for 2 or 3 months!!!!!
We are going to have a cold winter this year, I can feel it in my bones......

Sadly, IMO, you might save a few pounds but, often, it cost you that few pounds plus a bit more, when it Spring you put it back on the road again because it has been sitting rain water in parts of the engine & chassis and around the roof skylights that expands and contracts on the frosty days causing rust and seals to leak.

Also, rodents love a static dry home for the winter, especially one with plastic wire to chew, keeping their ever growing teeth shorter and food of any description.

I use both my Ducato, and my VeeDub camper, as my daily drivers ( and take them for a much longer 1hr run combined with shopping/picnic etc. at least once a fortnight) and it's noticeable that, because of their design, whenever I move off, there is a large gush of water from the roof if it's been raining.

It's laying water off the roof because my Ducato sits, tilted forwards and flutes on the roof are blocked by the skylight.
The VW has roof recesses around it's skylight but because it has a raised rim and no sealant, it's less of a problem.

Sorn your vehicle if you want BUT make certain it's well prepared and protected from the elements.

A fluted roof on a Camper conversion is a stupid design (unless you make money repairing these vehicles of course! )😡

A car with insurance may still be technically insured if it's not taxed, but the insurance company can refuse a payout or cancel the policy. This is because most insurance policies require the vehicle to be taxed.

Cannot find definitive answer:
If I sorn the MH on 4th of January and unsorn it on 5th of February does that count as a complete month?
Or
In the DVLA’s eyes, do complete months only start on the 1st of any month?

It is the hidden tax con. You can no longer hand over tax to the buyer of your vehicle, so you will be charged up until the end of the month even if you sold it on the 1st of the month - free tax to DVLA. Then of course the buyer cannot drive the vehicle until taxed, even if bought on the last day of the month, they must pay for the whole month. So two people pay tax on the same vehicle for the same month. Kerching.....

I don't think that is correct. Where do you get the information that "most insurance policies require the vehicle to be taxed"?
While there may be some, and I am not aware of these, my insurer (LV) does not. Nor do many other major insurers that I know of. Also looking back at previous threads on this subject would indicate that many, if not most, insurers do not require a sorned vehicle to be taxed.

Many motorhome owners sorn their vehicles and I would not want them to be misled.

I have been told some also expect ot to have an mot. My car is on the road having all 3 but used rarely. There used to be a 3rd party type insurance if the vehicle was off the road but I'm going back a very long time

a cold winter is even more reason to use it. My old bones can't take the cold any more, we are off in seek of warmth on Jan 2nd....
