Calais

Mark my words, one day somebody will be pulled from their MoHo in Calais and will sit helpless as it drives off. I'll be making sure it's not me.

I have friends who are international truckers and they have had dealings in that area for many years. They have said people are getting far more aggressive now.

It's only a matter of time.
slept in my truck in Glasgow in the 70 s,,,if i survived there i am not worried about Calais,,,BUSBY,,

Perhaps the Glaswegians were not as desperate to get into England?
Don't know but The Romans took it upon themselves to build a wall to keep them out years ago,,,BUSBY:D:D.

The thing is at the end, if you need to ask the question why even consider it and be uncomfortable, there are thousands of Aires and camps , even in Calais you have two without even looking it up probably loads more , cite Europe and gravelines, are within twenty minutes and apart from the odd bike seat theft pretty much crime free.(y):)

Bit like our Border Forces now,,,,BUSBY Y UY

I've got to say I've never seen a single "migrant" in or around Calais, even during the period last year or the year before when things were supposedly at their "worst." We crossed and returned several times during that period without even a hint of a problem.

I suppose that could be because we only use the tunnel and the main camp was on the access road to the ferry terminal but I would have thought by the law of averages we would have at least seen some sign of this legion of people desperate to attack us in our motorhome.

When is the Daily Mail due to bus the next lot into Calais?:D

It would be useful if we could have some photos on here of migrants or lack of them , from genuine motorhomers on the ground not some whipped up news paper stories.
Must admit I can't put any on as despite going over at least three times a year we have never seen more than the odd one walking at the side of the road, and even then it might be a legitimate worker.
But then again we have never parked in the centre of Calais as never felt the need.(y):)

There will always be someone who submits a post IMO, designed to frighten members, particularly new ones and put them off enjoying their trips, without knowing the full facts and in some cases simply misleading them altogether.

Saw quite a few on A26 between CaLais and The Tunnel in the early hours of the morning last year,,,Big Police response whithin minutes,,,,,We didn't feel threatened as they were laughing and waving,,,they were trying for the trucks heading for the tunnel,,BUSBY,,,

I will post some here next week when we are back over they are definitely still around the ferry road and the area around Pidou, Calais Wines but have not seen any around the tunnel area for about 18 months since they did a lot of removing the trees, flooding the surrounding land and putting in more fencing around the tunnel area.

I have extensive dashcam videos of our trips into and out of Calais this year and the last couple of years. Would you like me to post about a gigabyte of video to satisfy curiosity?

Seriously, about five or six years ago, we were delayed getting onto the tunnel at Calais because security had to clear some intruders from the site. We didn't see anything. Last year we saw a couple of youths at Cité Europe at night, but they wandered off, and we could not say for certain they weren't locals.

For "newbies", don't be worried: think of the old proverb about being chased by a tiger; you don't need to run faster than the tiger - just faster than your friend! So - park near others who have bigger garages and better bikes on the back!

Just wondering how many times you have crossed Via Calais in the last two or three years, how many migrants have you personally seen and how many of them were in a position to pose a threat to you. I recognise there have been incidents, some serious for truckers, and I take precautions myself but I have never, over several crossings a year seen other than one or two migrants despondently wandering along the road or in nearby fields. Your prediction might be better heeded if supported by factual first hand accounts. Please understand I do not wish to be argumentative or rude, It's just that my personal experience does not equate with your prediction. I cannot see migrants pulling a motorhomer out of their vehicle and driving off in it, where would they go, they certainly won't be getting through the tunnel or port.

I saw 5 on the side of the road last week 30 miles out of Calais on the E19. They were on the side of the road, smiling and making no attempt to stop any vehicles. It was broad daylight and loads of vehicles on the road. Nothing at all any closer to Calais itself.

Bonsoir all. For information, just before the aire at the front was closed we stopped early afternoon. Went and had a stroll and had some lunch, When we returned a French Lady made us aware of someone under our van. I fetched my motivation stick out of the van (baseball bat) and suggested to him that he may like to refrain from what he was doing! He rolled from underneath the van, shrugged his shoulders uttered some expletive and went and sat down about 10 yards away. That was the time we decided that even if it was not closing we would not use that aire again despite it being, believe it or not, one of our favourite places to stay. To clarify information about the new aire next to the campsite, it is controlled by a barrier whereby you pay and are then given a ticket with a code number on it to exit (so look after it!) it is a little awkward as the screen on the machine is low so no chance of a passenger being able to operate it, you have to get out. If you stay longer than one night upon exit it will ask for the additional payment. When we used it for the first time we thought that it would only accommodate about 20 vans but in the daylight having had a stroll about I reckon that the number is more like 50 as the" far end" has another section which can be opened. If you have a cycle it is not too far from the Friteries! Hope this helps.

£2000 fine for each person if they get in to the UK on your vehicle. Good job that lady was around.

Under what legislation can motorhome drivers be fined (as opposed to road hauliers)?

I was under the impression that it didn't matter who had 'allowed' someone to enter the UK in/on/under their vehicle, just a standard fine regardless, I stand to be corrected though as it's not something I've had to research!

Cite Europe best bet as new aire costs €10/11 although I hate cite Europe it is easy to get to

Lorry drivers are getting fined every day, I haven't seen any reported cases of motorhome drivers being fined, even though there have been cases of stowaways on motorhomes.

A group of them gassed me, stole my iPad and €2000 in cash last time I was in France in the van

Going over on Monday you just reminded me to put the ipad, Rolex & 2k of cash in the van.:D
Probably come back via Dieppe so fairly safe there.
