MH
just buying
Hi everyone, newbie here. After 35 odd years of caravanning and boating we’re heading out on the MoHo adventure. I have grandad rights relating to my C1 status but my son doesn’t. As we’re the family sharing type owner he will need to pass his C1 to be able to drive our MH when we get it. Despite what they say size does matter and we’re over 3500kg. I was wondering what the likely costs are in attaining said C1 for my son. He’s a competent blue light driver so practicality shouldn’t faze him it’s more about time and money? Look forward to your replies. Cheers.

Which just goes to show, if the course lesson format is left up to the individual training centre - with DVSA saying if the lesson meets there standard - without a standard series of lessons, its a waste of time and money.

Lessons like :-
Hazard awareness, First Aid, Drivers Hours, are good but that's only 3 out of 5 what other subjects are being taught ?

I know of drivers who have done Drivers Hours 5 times, what use is that (mind you 3 of those drivers had been done for breach of Drivers Hours.
I did a first aid course run by the local college and it was just as rubbish as the rest of themand still run by an ex-driver with no medical training. I was looking forward to the resuscitation part - thinking that could be useful, and they had the dummy there to try it until the instructor told us that he had had a go and he had a real streaming cold.

The course I do are the recognised first aid valid for 3 years, I paid for the refresher, both times max 8 people 4 dummies all the h&s followed even given the mouth guards to use and some to take away, course run by paramedics baby resuscitation, I felt was unsettling but worth while. 1-2-1 are also available but you get what you pay for .do 1 event as a first aider and not only do you get your money back but free entry. Just keep your fingers crossed you don't need the skills.
Dvsa don't not run the coursed jaupt arevthe awarding body. Just because an employer offers the training there is no reason why drivers cannot choose to upgrade to better courses and pay them selves.
Many do such as ADR and log that

Thats whats wrong with it, no assessment, you could sit and the back and not understand a word and you still get passed - like the EE guys in my first course did.
It's a big issue however many were designed as many older drivers had little to no education an exam at the end was not viable. Now many if the 'old boys' have retired or died off, unfortunately the system needs overhauling .one of the largest training suppliers went under 2 weeks ago after about 30 years until people are willing to pay for decent training it will be questionable

That brings me to full circle with my earlier comment that a 10 year in vehicle assessment with further training if deemed necessary would be much more effective for making our roads safer. I suspect it would put a lot of car drivers on the bus.

I totally agree, but who will do the testing, big companies like my former employer had there own accredited examiners, but smaller firms won't and there is a shortage of HGV examiners.
