C1 Medical delays

The government website specifically states you must renew if you want to drive abroad. The 1 year extension has no validity outside the UK.

I certainly agree that C1 entitlement is pretty low down the priorities list for DVLA, but the website seems pretty clear that ANY expiring licence is automatically extended for 1 year.
It's possible they have changed things, but when I did a webchat with them in August [emails and phone were not being responded to at all] there was no mention of issuing a licence for a year, only that if your application is with them and they haven't reponded you can keep driving for another year. I didn't fancy trying to explain that to an Italian of Greek copper, especially after 31st December.

If I understood it correctly they are actually issuing 1 year licences for everyone else. Either way, if you're going abroad you need a licence to produce if necessary.

Yes this is what I did thinking at 70 I would not need c1 but things change so got medical and eyes test sent forms of to my surprise just over 2 weeks license back for 3 years

No problem if you've no medical 'history'. OH is the same, no history, no medications - she's just had her 3rd post-70 renewal and the licence was returned within 2 weeks. I had a stroke 15 years ago - no one would ever guess, but computer - and DVLA medicos - say I must be a physical wreck so I have to go through this fandango every time the renewal comes round.

I don't mind them wanting to know I'm safe to drive but I am irritated by that you can drive a car without even having to demonstrate that you can see properly!

About to send off my D2 + D4 (medical) for renewal of driving licence for C1 entitlement (age 70 or over).

Section 1b on the D2 (highlighted in red on attachment) covers both C1/D1 entitlement. I only require C1. D1 is for minibus which is not required and which doesn't appear on my current driving licence anyway.

My application was delayed last time when DVLA queried whether I was applying for both C1 and D1.

I propose to just insert a "X" in the square block against Section 1b and cross out the reference to "D1".

What do others do to avoid confusion at DVLA ? Would appreciate any comments. Thanks.

Yes there is so hoping to go down that road, apparently it is not very pleasant but we shall see.

In section 1 a i have ticked C and C1
In section 1 c i have ticked the first one Lorry

Means you don't want/need D1 bus.

I'm a bit confused by all this talk of stress tests and medicals. On gov.uk it states that over 70's licences are to be automatically extended for 1year. Have I misunderstood?
mine expired ( C1 etc) in August and after chasing them as I had sent the medical etc in a 12 month licence arrived, so for me its another medical and a stress test for me in august next year

Thanks. Think I understand your logic but not sure about ticking Section 1a for provisional entitlement (unless it's your first application on reaching 70).

Section 1b still seems to be the most appropriate category for repeat applications. The notes (under INF2D) require you submit your full driving licence with application so DVLA will know which categories they previously granted.

Apologises to the OP for going slightly off-topic but the submission of D2 + D4 (medical) applications are both integral to the process, as you are aware.

It is a bit grey. This is why i will enclose a covering letter explaining my situation. It is my first application since turning 70 last Dec.
Apologies i have also X the box for 1 b

This is an image of the form D2 that I sent off to DVLA at the end of March this year.

The full page image shows the form as I sent it. The greyed out areas show personal details but NO tick boxes.

My licence came back without query.

Good Luck.

2nd renewal of acquired C1 (grandfathers rights) at age 73 together with completed D4.
Did you want C1+E and D1+1 which I need or just C1 & D1? I think the form is a bit ambiguous, I don't know if I should put a cross in section b and then in the Lorry & Bus in the first part of section c?

AT 74 I failed the treadmill by 30 seconds mainly due to a dodgy knee ,knackered lol. they then sent me for a echocardiogram. (just laid on the machine doing nothing, passed with flying colours and a glowing letter from the specialist .Me no understand lol.PS if you fail the treadmill it must pay to demand a echocardiogram which is far more accurate to the state of your heart.

TheTwoOfUs

I wanted to retain as many of the classes I acquired when I passed my driving test in 1970, but in particular C1 as our MH is 3850kg.

When I got my licence back it included C1+E as well as the categories shown on image below.

Not sure what the D1+1 that you quote is, but if you mean D1+E then it looks like I kept that as well but not for Hire or Reward:unsure:

For clarity... I have not passed any other 'Ministry of Transport' driving tests such as HGV, PSV, Towing etc.

Hope this helps. (y)

Just spoken to DVLA and they confirm that for C1+E & D1+E you fill out section b & the first part of section c (lorry & bus). Current turn round times for licenses is 6 - 8 weeks.
Yes I got the numbers and letters the wrong way round.

Too late, mine went off an hour ago. Can't remember what box i ticked now been that many changes. Just have to wait and see what comes back.

To anyone waiting for a driving licence renewal from DVLA.... a little tip I picked up is to check this part of their website...

You will need your
a. Driving Licence number
b. National Insurance number
c. Postcode

I found that for both my renewals, and my wife's, the details of the new licence appeared online about 4-5 days before it physically popped through our letterbox.

Good Luck.
