I apologise in advance if this post is a little off subject of Motorhomes. I’m retired (best job I have ever had 👍). I hold a C1 driving license. I heard that ‘Boris’ was sending out letters to people who hold a C1 license, asking if they could help out in the UK to drive upto 7.5 tonnes vehicles to deliver goods. As much as my retired life is ‘as busy as hell’ if I can help I would like to do so. Has anyone else got any more information?

As far as I’m aware the only ones being asked so far are ex Class 1 drivers. I have recently given up my C+E drawbar licence. I’ve not been asked.

No it’s all classes of HGV licence holders being asked, those that use it or not.

Although lots of us have C1 licences, driving a loaded 7.5 T vehicle is a different ball game.

C1 licence privileges are about as much good as a chocolate fire guard in the commercial world. What a shock most would have on completion of the 200th. Drop of the day, don't mention the fee per drop!
What on earth makes anyone want to undermine already pathetic salaries I have no idea, let alone support terms condition that a slave would have been all to familiar with.

Laudable intentions that sadly are at odds with reality. Becoming a professional lorry driver would be a shock to most on here, it is very different to driving a Motorhome.

There are plenty of LGV licence holders that could step in but they ve had years of poor working conditions, long hours, ridiculous training requirements and insufficient remuneration, the Transport and the farming industries are both now reaping what they sowed in a perfect storm caused mostly by failure to plan for obvious consequences.

i would assume there are more than few off duty or retired firefighters with HGV III licences that Boris could write to ...

Unfortunately before you can start you need to spend £££ on a useless CPC. Qualification.
More useful would have been for the Government to offer a 6 or 12 month DCPC amnesty, to all who had completed at least two courses previously. That may have generated an interest in those retired and experienced drivers. :(
My recent enquiries tell me that employers don't want to take you on and finance your DCPC. If you don't come with it, you don't even get looked at.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Or judge that once is enough. The first lot was useless and the second lot wasnt any better .

No such licence any more only two and that’s 1 Artic or 2 Ridged.

Plus the driver CPC is a good thing as a refresher because you’ll be surprised how many peeps forget the simple things like proper use of a tacho.

Your licences don’t exist either If you want to be pedantic. Which it appears you do. There’s C and C+E.
C being rigid C+E being trailers. Mine has 107, meaning drawbar trailers.

well i'm pretty sure that fire engine drivers need some sort of licence that translates into some sort of current standard .... whatever that might be !! if they can drive fire engines i am confident they can drive delivery trucks

They need a class C, same as the old class 2. They can’t however drive commercially for profit unless they have a CPC and Tacho and so can’t be delivery drivers without further training.

I find these days there is no point in posting here because someone will always argue against any post.

There is only a class 1 (C+E) and class 2 (C) end of.

Fire service pump drivers just drive using a class 2 (C) not for commercial reasons and as explained above if they do they need a drivers CPC and a tacho card.

But again most don’t bother because it effects their driving hours while they are firemen.

Years many years ago yes there was a class 3 ( single axel ridged) but they all got dropped into one category class 2 (C) any ridged.

You re the first person I've ever heard say they benefitted from Driver CPC.

No way to I claim to know it all but I've done 10 courses now far and havent found anything of benefit; In fact the one thing I thought I had learnt, turned out to be wrong and on another occasion I ended up correcting the instructor who later apologised in front of the class.

For me , it’s the paying for it and a loss of a day’s wages to do it. If someone is fed up with it before they start there is not much hope of engaging them. All they are doing is watching the clock waiting for it to finish.

I agree with you, those that work in the same industry everyday may find it boring and fall asleep but those that need it as a refresher heads up like me find it’s a useful means of info.

I needed it alongside getting back my HGV to get back on the road HGV wise plus I’ve just did my ADR Cert plus from tomorrow I’m doing my class 1.

So yes it’s useful for some and others find it boring but you need it so stop complaining and just get on with it I say.

Everyone else does CPD over the internet.

Why you need ongoing in-person training on a subject which you receive when you first become a lorry driver baffles me?!

Once your trained up surely a refresher course could be delivered via zoom or interactive training module one wet Saturday morning?!!

Cheers James

Yes the above is applicable if your self employed and this should be done in a positive manner different if your employed as employers pay for it and you get your wage as well.
