Buying Motorhome but No Gas Cylinders

Autogas2000 thirsk at first.
Have all cylinders in stock.
Also have alugas, lighter refillable option.
Highly recommended.

Facebook marketplace seem to have a few

We bought our MH at the hieght of the gas shortage and no Calor, Safefill etc. anywhere. However, just two miles from home is a supplier of Rectory Gas who had no concept of a shortage and said I could have as many bottles as I wanted. There may be a similar locally based gas supplier near you so it may be worth checking.

Bear in mind though you would be unlikely to find a supplier to exchange an empty bottle when far from home. This does not bother us as we rarely go away for more than a few days at a time owing to livestock committments.

We are told our new motorhome will not have any gas cylinders in it !
Looked up calor gas , but they are stating they have no cylinders unless exchanging , which we can’t do.
This seems to be the case with local calor gas suppliers.

We are up Aberdeen way, has anyone any advice of where we could get?
Is flogas just the same as Calor as I may be able to purchase that cylinders ?
Hi,
Just bought a new MoHo and faced with the same issue (I eventually found a Calor bottle in our local dealer), the search led me to ask if Gaslow could oblige. They did. The dealer ordered two bottles and the associated kit, it was delivered to him the next day and fitted the day after! It was a very good decision - it is so easy to roll up to Morrisons, plug into the LPG pump and you are done.
No lugging cylinders.
Good Luck
Bob

Reading the forum I cannot believe how lucky we were when we bought our first motor home, brand new in September 2020.
Being newbies (and very naive) we thought that it automatically came with everything ready to tour. However, when we picked it up, the dealer had added some free extras without prompting and these included ramps, hook up lead and two full gas bottles.
In hindsight, what excellent service.
The dealer was Dolphin Motorhome in Christchurch, Dorset.

We have an underslung tank. When we got the moho three years ago we thought it would be much easier than lugging gas bottles about. Just back from three weeks in Scotland (at least twice yearly event) where we always have to factor in filling stations with LPG to our route as they are so few & far between 'up north'. There are a few places which we always go to to get gas but even a couple of them have stopped selling it. We were at Aberdeen a couple of weeks ago & not one of the fuel stations shown on the Fill LPG app had any. Each stations pumps said out of order so assume they will be getting it again but it would be helpful if the app told us this as we were wasting diesel driving round to the different filling stations.

I'd always check with one of the two LPG apps before you especially go to any station to fill refillables with LPG.

MyLPG App which has the date and price, usually fairly up to date and covers all of the EU and UK.

FillLPG App which I have found less informative, and covers UK only, but others think it's better.

Thank you Brains, I didn't know about the MyLPG app, I've always used FillLPG as we stay in the UK & found it not very reliable. It often says they have it only for us to pull up on the forecourt & there to be out of order covers on the LPG pumps. So frustrating :madder:

We sold our moho a couple of weeks ago to a dealer, and kept the gas bottle. Now we need to work out what to do with it! When we looked online, the prices on fleabay, faceflap etc varied widely. Do people really want half empty bottles?

I think you will find they will gladly take a half empty bottle, better than nothing. (y)

Try your local recycling depot or any in the shire. I have been successful in getting for a friend of mine.

I agree, they are getting scares my local supplies will not let you change butane to propane or change a large cylinder for a small one,
just getting silly name your price.

I have propane cylinders to sell in Aberdeen area.

Given the initial outlay for exchange cylinders where you shall need to pay the deposit for the cylinders if you can even get hold of them. I would bite the bullet and go for refillable cylinders. You shall have no problem refilling them in Aberdeen. Asda at Garthdee, Shell on King Street and many other places available to refill. It shall give you far more flexibility and save you a hell of a lot of money in the long run.

Make sure they put one in to show you everything working on gas, with a bit of luck they’ll forget to remove it.

I would see if I could get a cheap gas bottle of a sale site etc and use the van and see what you like. It’s ok people telling you to spend lots of money on a refillable system and you find that you prefer camp sites, and won’t use much gas so be a lifetime before you break even. Try before spending.

The local council recycling centres here all have them in various sizes, you just need to get friendly with one of the staff. They just wait for tge manufacturer to collect them, which is not very often. I’m talking from personal experience as I’ve had empties from them before. Also you can swap Calor bottles within a range so you could find a blue 7kg butane bottle and swap it for a 6kg propane, which is what most use 😊 I’ve also bought empties via Gumtree so they are out there to be had
FYI, calor bottles can currently only be swapped like for like and no new contracts, they're driving us mad frankly, prices up, restrictions and then just trying to get supplies.

Invest in a couple of 'Safefill' refillable cylinders, they will soon give you a return on your investment. Bought my two 6 years ago, just filled my 10 Kg at £14 per cylinder ready for the off next month. In the 6 years filled them many times without problem both here at FloGas and on the continent. Every time I fill up I save on average £20 per cylinder. Buying from Calor is a no brainer.

Trade Tool hire shops is an option.

Hi
We are up Aberdeen way also we searched gumtree and other selling sites for old gas bottles them exchanged them at local garage if that’s any help.

When we goy our MH we went to the local refuse center and asked the lads in their. They gave us two 6k cylinders which was very good of them, I went back later with the a crate of beer for them.

Can't take or get near anything at our tip. I was even stopped from taking a useable poultry drinker from someone else just as they were taking it out of their car.

Yes things hive tightened up at ours but if you catch the right one and be up front about a donation it can work

We just bought our MH and it had 1 6kg cylinder but not knowing how full it was and not wanting to run out I like a few others have found out that dealers are only doing 1 in 1 out, no new cylinders available, so I looked on Ebay and FB marketplace and found an empty 1 close by but was £60 at least I had 1 now - just £25.50 to exchange and peace of mind

Try your local refuse center they usually have some that have been dumped. I got two out of ours for the price of a tray of beers

Not much use without gas bottles in ,I would insist in at least 1 refillable supplied with the van )otherwise it's not much use to you ,you can't even make a brew or run the fridge ) and you can add a calor or another refillable later at your choice
How do you do that if you don't have any?
We have a grand total of 0 in stock, we were meant to have 60 bottles from Calor and 4 arrived and went in seconds.
Even in my lofty position I cant even get one for my BBQ in the garden!
