Newbie after owning caravan
We are told our new motorhome will not have any gas cylinders in it !
Looked up calor gas , but they are stating they have no cylinders unless exchanging , which we can’t do.
This seems to be the case with local calor gas suppliers.

We are up Aberdeen way, has anyone any advice of where we could get?
Is flogas just the same as Calor as I may be able to purchase that cylinders ?

Most new and used vans don't come with a gas bottle. 8 vans and I have never been given one.
Maybe look on Facebook marketplace, gumtree etc and buy a s/hand bottle to use in getting a refill exchange. 👍
Ref calor Vs flogas it would depend on where you plan to travel as calor is available in more places.

I can't compete on the 8 vans of tonka but I've had bottles in both my vans, one used, one new. Probably the recent shortages in bottles why you are not getting them provided? On the bottles exchange, my local Flogas readily exchanges for Calor but not sure on the exchange policy of Calor.

Not much use without gas bottles in ,I would insist in at least 1 refillable supplied with the van )otherwise it's not much use to you ,you can't even make a brew or run the fridge ) and you can add a calor or another refillable later at your choice

No bottles included when we got ours. Had to buy a starter pack which included one plus loads of toilet chemicals. Wanted another and not possible

Try your local recycling centre there are usually empty gas bottles there, ask nicely and you might get one then just exchange for a full one

Pretty sure I have a flogas bottle (empty) kicking around the workshop. It's an 11kg or there abouts. You're more than welcome to it.

Not sure where you exchange it up here, I'd always changed them over when I've been in Edinburgh.

I bought my motorhome from a dealer but it was advertised privately a month earlier and I had seen the advert.
When I came to collect it, the dealer had stripped out all of the extras that the private seller had advertised it the van. I contacted the private seller and it turned out that they had placed the van with the dealer to sell on a commission basis and that extras such as gas cylinders and awning should be included.
I liaised with the dealer and said that if they weren’t included, I would pull out of the sale.
They went to a shed and just pulled out all of the items that came with the van.
So, if you’re buying from a dealer, I’d be tempted to do likewise.
If it’s a private seller, ask where the cylinders went?
Failing that, I can recommend Autogas 2000 near Thirsk. I’d be tempted to get a quote and negotiate off the sale price.

The local council recycling centres here all have them in various sizes, you just need to get friendly with one of the staff. They just wait for tge manufacturer to collect them, which is not very often. I’m talking from personal experience as I’ve had empties from them before. Also you can swap Calor bottles within a range so you could find a blue 7kg butane bottle and swap it for a 6kg propane, which is what most use 😊 I’ve also bought empties via Gumtree so they are out there to be had

Try B & Q, my son bought one there yesterday. It would have been either Stirling or Cumbernauld but worth trying your local one.
Edit to say it was a butane one but gas supplier will exchange for a propane.

There were some out at the Hazlehead recycling centre last time I was there. Don’t know what they do with them but might be worth asking.

Thanks so much for all the useful replys , I will look into the refillable ones and availability of refilling beside us as that sounds best way forward.
Will also look at other suggestions to get a 2nd bottle in the van as. back up.

When I sold my last van, the cylinder went into my new one. Neither van was supplied with cylinders by the dealers I bought them from.

In terms of your last sentence, do you mean travelling abroad? Mum has Flogas in her caravan and when she recently had to change one of the cylinders the swap bottle was delivered to her doorstep within 48 hours.

We used to have flo gas and yes they delivered to the door, very good service

We have an underslung and fill up at the pump near Laurencekirk.

Always had a cylinder in new MoHo from Highbridge - though had to procure 2nd via Gumtree due to regular EU travels on business.

New Van will have combination Gaslow / Calor backup.

some dealers are tight (scumy) enough they take the bottles out and presumably sell them for a extra profit.
I know for a fact the van I bought had two 6kg bottles in it when the dealer bought it privately, when I picked my van up he'd nicked one.
I was in the same position (last year), no where would sell me a bottle. I managed to get one via a friend of a friend who lived or worked on a campsite.

I did mean in UK..
I used to have flogas as there was a stockist around the corner and also had some free home deliveries from them(y)
Meant that you seem to see Calor stocked in more places around the country, Flogas have good coverage but sometimes you do here of areas where they are thin on the ground and harder to find a stockist when travelling.

I would definitely go for a refillable system rather than Calor's rip-off prices. Over your motor homing life, it will more than pay for itself plus you can get gas abroad unlike Calor. Check the gas locker size to see what you can fit in. Safefill (lightweight/removable), GasBank (same but remote filler), Gaslow and Gasit (steel fixed systems).

When we bought our van last year it came with no gas bottles. We had problems finding any to start us off so couldn't use the van until we got refillable gaslow bottles fitted.

I'd also go for refillable but if you end up taking the van without bottles, ask them to demonstrate that the system has been pressure tested

At handover i would want to see all gas appliances working, even if then they had the gall to remove it. with mine they even demonstrated the auto changeover working leaving me with 2 full bottles.
i hadn't negociated an excessive discount obviously.

Ours also came without bottles - we were "specially" allowed by the dealer to buy a single 6kg Calor Lite as we are newbies and therefore didn't have anything. Been unable to get a second bottle anywhere since then, although a bit more relaxed about it now. We tend to always go for pitches with EHU, so heating / fridge / etc all covered, and we don't intend to do a lot of cooking inside. The little BBQ thing seems to work off easily obtainable small cartridges (we don't have a BBQ point on the MH anyway).

Buy a refillable Safefill bottle and gas will be a third of the price forever :drinks:
Safefill in short supply, I've been trying to purchase a new 7.5kg, no success so far.
