Buying Gas bottles in France

I think he means the ones on your bottles are only single-stage and don't have a pressure relief valve.

I know with most German vans inc., Hymer etc., the standard fit is a bottle top regulator, it does have a pressure relief valve, the bulk head regulator is an option . Any comments Basildog

Yes no over pressure protection in those regulators and probably the incorrect pressure too .
Yes the Germans use a lot more bottle top regulators in leisure vehicles, in fact the GOK catalogue makes my head spin !
For some reason in the U.K. manufacturers have chosen not to use bottle mounted regulators even though they are permitted in the standards , probably another stupid NCC decision ⚠️

I wouldn't know where to buy any other than the ones sold by every caravan and camper supplier.
Is the factory fitted regulator supplied different?

Yes the regulator you have mounted on the wall is a leisure vehicle specific item , 2 stage 30 mbar incorporating an over pressure protection device built in .
If a single stage regulator fails you have full bottle pressure inside your van ⚠️
There’s always a good reason for advancement in safety standards, people died in caravans .
Whilst you are correct that leisure outlets and dealers will sell you all these products they haven’t got a clue what they are selling or the correct equipment.
I had to refuse a customer last week who was insisting we send him a 50 mbar regulator for his 2016 Swift kontiki ⚠️ Old stock so cheap but he wouldn’t listen ! Kept telling me it looked the same .

Is my new van set up any better?

Yes that’s as it should be
We keep approximately 30 different leisure vehicle regulators in stock heading towards a thousand regulators so I know a bit about them hopefully 👍

Dwarfland I have a nearly empty French Butagaz that you can have for free if any good, think it's prob 13 or 15kg. Will have to check Monday

I work near to a calor suppier so when I see foreign bottles traded in I tend to aquire them in case any good to any Funsters as they can't do anything with them. We have refillable on ours so I won't use it.

In Oldham on Saddleworth side so not too away

I use a French 13KG Butagaz Propane cylinder when abroad that I got from a Supermarket a few years back for a deposit of 1 euro. Unfortunately I don't know if it is still as easy to obtain one.

Rather than swapping tails I use an adapter that screws onto the Propane cylinder and then use the standard Calor tail. It also fits the French Butane cylinder which I tried initially but found it froze up when we were in the Pyrenees.

It’s the empty U.K. bottle I’ll have the problem with. My gas locker holds 2x 13kg so I can replace one with a foreign bottle but don’t want to ditch the old one knowing how hard it is to get a non exchange replacement at present.
Most lpg fork lift trucks have the bottle fitted horizontally , Can't see how it could be dangerous with an empty one.BUSBY.

Engines use a liquid take off not vapour.

A forklift bottle is designed to be on its side with a liquid take off 👍
Whilst an empty cylinder on its side is not going to present the same risk as a full one it’s not recommended and therefore should be avoided.
It’s like the people that tell us they want 10 metres of orange gas hose for a BBQ and state that they have seen roofers with long hoses ⚠️
Roofers hose is high pressure at around 4 Bar (4000 mbar )
Motorhome BBQ low pressure 30 mbar .

Yes it's no problem getting a new cylinder in France. We use the beige 12kg propane from Intermarche, available all over. Here's my dual cylinder auto switchover installation.
