Busting the VAT myth.

While we're at it can we stop regurgitating the myth A frames are legal and folks get gassed.

I won't hold my breath.
... spoil sport!

Oh, Francis ... you weren't 'Frank' on another motorhome forum a good few years ago were you who had 'tussles' with Mel B?

All a bit pointless as a first post as its well known that they take the vat whilst you are gassed !

Yes a new van has VAT within the selling price and if you are VAT registered and using it for you business you can ask for a VAT receipt and claim it back.
If you later want to sell this say after 3 years you would have to charge VAT to whoever puchased it trade or private and declare this and pay the VAT portion of the price to the VAT man.
A dealer selling a used motorhome will use what the revenue call " the used car system" vat is charged on the profit the dealer is making the same as all car dealers, the chances of you getting a VAT receipt for this is pretty slim as within a couple of minutes you can work out how much profit the dealer has made.

To be pedantic, the dealer pays VAT on the "margin" not the "profit".
Using smaller values, dealer takes in car at £1400 and sell for £2000.
He may service and MOT it so incurs a cost, but he is judged for VAT on the "margin" of £600 irrespective of expenditure, he cannot charge VAT but incurs VAT on the £600, being £100.
I may be wrong that is how my son understands it when he sells 2nd hand cars.
