Burstner Wiring Loom

Remember when cars didn’t have electronics, just electrics?
Distributer with rotor arm and points?
Carburettor?
Cable drive for the speedometer and odometer?
Things were always going wrong, but you could always repair them.
Happy days 🙂

On the first (Imp based) car I built I regularly went round scrapyards looking for bits to use.
I couldn’t find a hazard warning light unit. No problem I thought, plenty of the old electro-mechanical indicator light units around. I’ll use one for the left indicators and another for the right indicators and switch them both on for the hazards.
What I hadn’t anticipated was that they would have slightly different flash rates. They would start off in sync but gradually get out of phase 🙁
Yes I remember. Why did I need to collect several rotor arms for my first car (1977 Mk2 Escort Est) though? :)

I spent many Saturday mornings at the local car breaker’s scrapyard looking for original fit switches, gauges and Cibie lights etc for the cheap as chips modifications 👍
Just fit it and no hassle with coding like the modern ones

This may have been the same Hacksaw fiend :)
I did think there must be a niche in the market after getting knock backs from so many auto electricians, loom makers, custom car builders...and more. But like you say, the labour cost would end up more expensive than replacing the MH :)
I had originally expected him to send the job my way and was a little disappointed he didn’t. It was only when he was in a corner with it as his mate disappeared that I agreed to take it on but on condition that he paid for the time taken.
The reason most people won’t get involved is that they don’t know what the original cause is so no matter how good a job is made with the loom repairs, there may be other electronics damaged and then a potential disagreement whether it is pre or post repair and of course a repeated burnt loom once reconnected.

The scrapyard guys always used to be a bit suspicious of me I think because, when they asked me what I was after, I’d just say I wanted a look round to see what they had.
What seal would be just right for the doors?
What dashboard instruments would fit?
What gas strut would suit my opening rear window?

This is just a shameless excuse to post another picture of the second car I built from scratch in 1985 🙂

Really well done and great job. Remember AVRO issuing a warning 30+ years ago about the hazards in newer materials when recovering burnt out vehicles.

Probably a little late for you now but may be of interest for anyone that just needs the terminals where the plug is still ok but the manufacturer does not supply loom components separately. You can get these and the wire seals into the plug from DAF Truck dealers, cable you may need to source separately as most DAF wires are the same colour and numbered, although should keep a range as they would need to make up looms for light bars etc.

Below is a photo of some of the common ones we use with part numbers which may be useful if you are struggling to source terminals that may be corroded etc.
