Bruges Christmas Market

Avoid eating at La Taverne Brugeoise in the market square the food was not good, the service was appalling, the bill was exorbitant - a total tourist trap

We got back from Brugge on Friday. To be honest it's not a great Christmas Market. The ice sculptures are worth a visit, wrap up warm if you go though. We are flying to Munich for Christmas market on Thursday. They have a great one.

We'd love to do this, Christmas Market time or not:) We've been to Bruges twice but not ventured abroad with the van yet.

I notice Big Map posted last night that they'd just been and there were 3 markets but only found 2 - is this correct as we've only found the one in the main square?

Only a poor substitute but at least you can get a little peek on the webcam here, I do like skyline:)

(Oh usually looks at this every day to get his Valletta fix(y))

One market was in Markt Square and another in Simon Stevinplein both of which we found. The other one (we didn't find) I will try and find the name of when I find the map the hotel gave us.

Anyone one wanting a quick ,cheap xmas market tour , booze cruise, there is markets in ipers, arras, Lille and gravelines, all can be done in a day trip on the tunnel £56 return , we are going on 15 dec if anyone is going same time give us a shout, but will only be doing ipers and gravelines this time as , as someone said they are not really up to all the hype.
Btw if you get your times right , you get two days for a day trip(y)

Thanks, saw a previous posting of yours about the tunnel trips, sounds great(y)
We've been to the Bruges and Brussels ones, are they pretty much all the same?

Brugge not a cheap destination! But we love it ...the aire every time for us...just so convenient

Verune a nice overnight, kinda a mini brugge, free port aire close to centre. Lovely square with resturants and bars. We had our best meal of the trip to Amsterdam during October half term there..and the beer supurb!

As far as Christmas markets go brugge supposed to be pretty poor compared to others?

Yeah , in our experience they are mostly the same, havnt been to german ones though, we did quite a few last year , ice rink , hot wine , chocolates , wooden toys, sausage, frites, about it really, atmospheres ok but that's it.
When we came home last year we stayed at gravelines, and found that they were having one but it didn't start till after we came home, but the stalls were all laid out and there was loads more than where we had been so this year we are going later just to do this one especially as its only twenty minutes up the road from the tunnel.

Just got back from a short break in Belgium.
Did a late night Eurotunnel crossing on Thursday, and stayed at Gravelines.
Friday morning - onto Brugge. We stayed at the Aire (15 euro a night). To Porkster - dead easy to use; Take ticket from machine at entrance, park up etc. Before you leave, take your ticket to the large building and pay at the machine (Kasse). Drive out of the Aire, and use ticket to exit at the barrier in coachpark.
We love Brugge, the shops and the atmosphere. The Christmas market is "ok".
Saturday morning - onto Ypres. Stayed at Jeugdstadion. Make sure you book in advance: http://www.jeugdstadion.be/E/index.php
It's a short 15 minute walk from Jeugdstadion into town. Once again, the Christmas market was "ok" - we spent most of our money in the shops, and pretty much nothing in the market.

A little disappointed with the markets at both Brugge and Ypres, although both are better than the efforts we've experienced in the UK. Still consider Cologne and Rüdesheim to be the best Christmas markets we've been to.

The other one is in the Het Zand area

We're on the train at 6.20  doing a bit of shopping on the way. We've got a Bailey Approach 745, with a Fun sticker in the windscreen but the Silverscreen will be covering it. See you on site (y)

Only 2 more sleeps :)
