Brittany Ferries New Ship Galicia - My Opinion - Review

We've just travelled from Santander to Portsmouth on the Galicia. Our cabin was on deck 8, on the port side. When we reached the corridor to our cabin, there was a faint smell of diesel fumes. Every time we left our cabin, we were greeted by the same faint smell of diesel fumes. We went for our included evening meal; after just a mouthful, my wife felt unwell and was sick on the return to our cabin. Was this due to the smell of diesel fumes ?

By Sunday afternoon, we had to leave our cabin as the smell of diesel fumes had become much stronger and unbearable. We asked at the information desk and were told that Brittany Ferries were aware of the problem and were trying to fix it. We completed a complaints form, explaining that we had to leave our cabin due to the unbearable smell of diesel fumes in our cabin and the corridor. A number of other passengers also left their cabins, due to diesel fumes, and completed complaints forms. Even this morning, I still had a taste of diesel in my mouth.

During our crossing, there were 2 occasions when a helicopter had to land on deck, both on Sunday morning, separated by over 2 hours, for medical emergencies. Were these reactions due to the strong smell of diesel fumes?

I've had a quick google to see if this has occurred previously. The first reports I've found are from early March:

https://www.talkquesada.com/quesada-general-discussion-f9/a-travellers-tale-t52094.html

https://www.trucknetuk.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=168028&p=2740447

It's now December, some 9 months since the first reports and it's still not been fixed. Why are Brittany Ferries still selling these cabins on decks 7 and 8 on the port side? Don't they have a duty of care to their passengers?

We won't be using the Galicia in future. We'll limit our travels to sailing on the Pont Aven.
wonder if it is fixed yet ?

Let you know Next Week 😃 but no Issues when we returned on March 2nd this Year but that was in a dog friendly cabin on Deck 7 or when I crossed on my motorbike in June and returned in July this Year...

Okay, so as I mentioned, I said I was going to leave a review of our recent sailing on Brittany Ferries new Flagship, Galicia. Its not good, from my point of view. So if any aficionados of Brittany Ferries that may be offended, please do not read on.

As big fans of Brittany Ferries, especially of its Spanish routes, we were looking forward to the new vessel arriving from China (Stena Ro-Ro). We like Cap Finistere and Pont Aven So, we have been waiting wit excitement to travel on Galicia.

We arrived far too early for the Ferry in our car, so turned away and had a packed lunch by the sea. We returned for check-in at 6pm, more than four hours before departure. The check in was slow, very. When we eventually arrived at the desk, the man we dealt with was rude and abrupt. I explained that I had not input our vehicle registration because the data they hold puts it over 1.83m, its not its 1.7. So after some grumbling he decided not to measure the height or apply a charge. When I questioned the £245 cancelation charge on my ticket, the reply was, "Nowt to do with me that, nothing I could do about it". Okay, so if that's the case, be more polite. They do have the facility to take payments for under declared vehicle dimensions though!.

Anyway, loading of the boat was quite efficient and quick I thought, despite being one of the last groups of vehicles to be a loaded.

At the car deck, plenty of space and wide lanes, not trucks to negotiate.

On trying to locate our cabin, there was no direct lift from car deck 5 Green. The lift did go to 9, but only to the Crew quarters. So, lift to floor seven, try to find stairs to deck 9. Cabin was easy to find though.

First impressions of the cabin were good. But as time went on, it was a big disappointment.

We had treated ourselves to a commodore Suite. Double bed, brewing up facilities, mini bar, direct access to the ships deck.

Problems:

*Poor water flow to cabin, second day, a dribble for a shower
*BF Quote "Large Flatscreen TV" Its not large. But I guess Larger than those in other cabins. You need binoculars to read anything on screen from the bed. It is also poorly located.
*The fixtures and fittings are poor quality.
*The Minibar was a cheap Chinese fridge with the control actually written in Chinese. The sort of thing you buy from Argos (it was cold though !)
*The BIG problem was the direct outside deck access.

First time we opened the door, a couple of people were sat up against it, they were very apologetic as were we. But then they put their chairs back when we closed the door.

When we managed to get to sit outside and be able to get a couple of chairs. Several people tried to walk inside. One couple were inching past me when I said "Sorry, that's our room". I think the man thought I had said "Have you got enough room?". The lady actually walked into our cabin and then was mortified as she had also misheard me. I just laughed it off and she was so apologetic. It was quite entertaining for the rest of the people on deck. There was piece of rope next to the door, so we had to wedge the door open with the bin and then put the rope across. You know what happened next!.

Dining & Bars:

Now onto food, mediocre at best. The cabin came with Commodore club access (£35 pp if they have availability with other cabins). We had tom queue for 20 mins the first time for some Tapas and a glass of wine. The second day we used it, another 20 min queue. I was given half a glass of wine, the bottle had run out. I thought no bother, I will go back later and get a refill. My wife queued again for 10 mins. Only to be told, they don't serve wine after 2pm. I guess a lot of people who have access, will sit and get there monies Worth. In truth, if we were paying, what we ate and drank on the two short visits would have cost us around £25-£30 on similar BF crossings. So for us, not worth the £35pp.

Evening dinner:

We are allocated a time slot of 6:15 for our sitting in the Al a Carte restaurant at the Bow of the Ship. The queue was 35 mins to getting to the counter. Your request food from the servers and take your tray to any free table. The food looked nice, it was shockingly poor. Luke warm a best. I guess we could of gone back to the end of the queue and selected other meals. But we rally could not be bothered. I ate a small bowl of Langoustines and my wife poked around looking for squid under some much of potato. The fries were like cardboard. We paid for a bottle of Chablis, £22, I've had better €1,50 wines from Spanish Supermarkets. We left, bitterly disappointed.

The Commodore Suites come with Continental breakfast served in the room. No order was taken for Friday morning, so we had to go to reception to request it. Saturday was the same lack of order. On both occasions, they did not even provide milk or sugar for the tea.

The main bar was closed.

Shopping:

I Noticed how much cheaper the shop is, now it is Duty Free. 200 Cigarettes which is the suggested limit is around £32, wines are cheaper, but you have reasonable limits on those kind of Purchases. We spent a lot of money in the shop as there were some good buys. One of My wife's preferred perfumes, normally £60 UK price, £50 reduced to £35. Some good wines from £4 upwards. they were also selling individual cans of beers, Maybe because the main bar was closed.

The Ship Itself:

I am not an Engineer, more a Technician who can Engineer things. Call me a jack of all trades, master of none I guess. That said, I think I could make a better job than some of the work I saw. Ill bet with some practice, My grandchildren all aged under 12 could weld better seams.

The ships tannoy system was inaudible On our deck, in our cabin and shower. Just let's hope there is not any emergency, if so the signal works better. looking around at details like, Pieces of make do wire, make do rope, over sized cable grommets packed out with silicone, worse still, on the car deck, insulation tape. missing screws from balustrades that dip and twist. Ill fitting flip mats, distorted door seals. Galicia has been in service for just over 6 months. I wonder how the build quality will stand up to the high volume of passengers. When I look around the Old Pride of Brugge, Stenas Holandica / Britanica, then Pont Aven and Cap Finsitere. You can see the difference in build quality.

The Crew:

All French that we met and spoke with. We could not fault them. Polite, courteous, even humorous. All smartly dressed as always and all happy to help, chat and even crack some jokes. One of the Maintenance Engineers accidentally (so he claimed) gave some passengers a slight shower as he mishandled his hose (clean thoughts folks). The funniest thing was, he spoke little or no English, As he tried to apologise, sounded like the Poloceman In 'Allo 'Allo!.

Disembarkation:

It took some time, but it doesn't bother me. I can sit in the car and plan routes check emails, whatsapps etc. But some people did get a but agitated.

Customs/Border Control:

When we left the ship, we stopped at passports and were asked if we had residency. All checked at off we drove. We were pulled in again customs/aduana, checked and sent away again. Only to be stopped briefly as we left the port exit. No real drama and we had nothing that we should no have. There were some trailers and vans being pulled over. I think they had brand new building materials on. Some discussions were taking place with the Guardia

I have 6 future Sailings booked on Galicia, I changed to of them last night and looking to change all the others.

We are not snobs, just paying customers who work very hard and expect what we pay for. I have contacted Brittany Ferries and I am still awaiting an explanation regarding several charges, lack of credit notes and refunds. If and when we get back to normal, we may be booking less Spanish routes in future.

I will pop some Photos on......
I take it that there is a copy of the above that has been sent to BF.

Please do not take umbrage at the following, but, If not. Why not?

You might be doing someone on here a favour at remarking about the problems you encountered
but those problems are likely to be repeated, over and over again until you, and anybody else kicks.

Example; Two weeks ago, our day to day chariot broke down. From an original arrival time, the eventual turning
up of the recovery man slipped on two occasions by over an hour (without notification)

They were told that a vulnerable person as well as a child were in the car but that didn't seem to alter their approach.

On being recovered I was invited by the tech. to do an online survey. They got both batrrels (He was professional and
did not get marked down).

The following day, by E mail I was invited to fill out another survey/questionnaire. They got both barrels again!

48hrs later I received an apologetic phone call from a manager who said he had investigated, including listening
to my three phone calls and agreed the service we had received was not acceptable.

The days have gone where I could earn £25 an hour but I did that night sat in a garage forecourt.

Probably held up by Stop Oil protestors,or maybe Extinction Rebellion or possibly Matt Hancock on his way to the Jungle ?

You only see the Bad Reviews/Experiences on the Net/Forums considering the Galicia carries over 1000 Passengers on each sailing most of the time, if 25 have Issues each sailing still only 2.5% of customers, obviously 25 too many...but some peeps do think they're on a Cruise Ship not a Car Ferry 🙄

Same as the Op's above Breakdown Issue, wonder how many Breakdowns there was that Night but i'd hedge my bets the Majority went off without a hitch...but nobody would post that on the net/forum...way of Life these days with Social media/FB,Forums ect i'm afraid...

I agree with what you say.

But I have long been a great fan and promotor of Brittany Ferries. Often recommending BF and its routes. You can read this on my posts on here and other travel forums.

For me, and my family. Brittany Ferries have declined over the years. From the strikes 10 years ago, covid19 reactions and now, for me, the leasing of Chinese vessels from Stena. maybe its the way forward, that is the Ryanair of the seas. The old school traveler has fallen by the wayside. From the Northern working class to the Thames Yachting Club folk.

Back 10 year ago. You could call Brittany Ferries to chat to someone and resolve most issues. Still can to some extent, if you can get through. Though, despite my always polite and patient tone, You can tell how staff morale has dwindled downwards when you call BF.

Try finding a lorry driver who has anything good to say about them along with the fact that they are paying twice to three times as much as you to be treated like shite.

Versus €660 return and no hotels required. Less wear and tear and service costs too

Similar trip for us but meandering down through France is part of our holiday,Use Brittany Spanish route to avoid crap weather in winter but if I have to use Gallicia or Salamanca I will drive,,,BUSBY,
Yes, I understand that.

We are mostly in our car heading to our house in Javea.

Im looking at changing from a 6 Berth 6 Belted A Class to a smaller PVC so we can use that and drive through France when we have the time. Our 3 Grandchildren still come with us. So for the time being, hanging on the the Hymer.

We came across the end of October had a cabin on deck 9 and cannot fault anything apart from a slow disembark. Was better than expected and after some careful costing was about £200 more expensive than a drive. We always use campsites. Kept a lot of miles off our vehicle too.

When did you take an item back to a store to tell them it was a good purchase or complete a survey or write a letter of recommendation or commendation? Because it takes time and is if no great benefit to yourself, however, if you have a grievance you take satisfaction for getting of your chest. This is why more people take the time to complain but not recommend.

Your Stats don’t really hold up.

A couple of times, I’ve done jobs for nothing. Just asked in return people leave us a Google or yell review.

None of them have and we no longer do anything for nothing.

Chinese build quality again, cars, ships, Motorcycles, all the same.

Hello. Really detailed post. You have 6 sailings booked. How far in advance can you book. I only seem to get 12 months ahead calendar up on the Brittany website

Thanks

When BF rehearse the sailing schedules, usually summer. You can book up until the following October/early November.

So if they are released July 2023, you can book until November 2024.

We know of a few couples who have felt/been sick with the smell in their cabins on the Galicia.
When we came back in March 21 we started to feel queezy with the smell whilst still in port at Santander and on looking out of the cabin window realised that the side of the ship was covered in smoke from the funnel.
A couple of hours later we went on the rear deck for some fresh air, but after about 10 minutes the ship slightly changed course and we were covered in smoke from the funnels and the same smell we had suffered in the cabin.

Have to agree that the crossings on the Pont Aven have always felt like a cruise (but she doesn't take the sea very well). The new ships just seem expensive for what they are.

Brittany Ferries have admitted this week that their inclusive meal has been poor quality (think canteen food) and have stopped including it for new bookings. Bet they don't reduce the prices though.

They change ship in spring 2023 with the Salamanca, be interesting to see what it’s like when we sail.

Had both experiences when we sailed before, bit of a funny smell which kept coming back on one trip and other 3 sailings no problems at all - in my view a positive experience (hence booked again)
