An earlier post [Minxy or a reply to her,IIRC] referred to many UK [small] businesses ceasing exports to EU, and a number of EU [small] businesses [a Dutch Bike Parts Supplier's comments on Twitter went viral] have also ceased exporting to UK because they need an Export Agent [extra cost each shipment], UK VAT Registration [more cost] and more paperwork [admin costs].
The Guardian ran an article on small businesses and on individuals who hadn't realised about the extra VAT & tariffs buying EU goods online. One female ordered a coat from an EU country, at a basic cost of some £82. When the coat was delivered, she had to pay the Courier the VAT & Import Duties plus a Courier Admin Fee of £10, bringing the total cost to in excess of £200.
These are the types of transaction that will catch us out more widely than 'booze & fags', both because EU small businesses may not export to UK and/or EU hauliers/couriers don't want the cost & aggro of delays in delivering to UK, and, lastly, because the VAT, Import Duty, Admin Fees etc will raise the price significantly.
Back to the days when a Motorbike Club Member and his wife took their Summer Holiday to ride their BMW M/bike to the BMW Main Agents, purchased all the service and repair parts, and spent most of their holiday stripping and rebuilding the bikes, returning to UK with the 'smuggled' internal parts fitted to the bike's engine, free of all the import fees et al.
