Breakdown Insurance

Some advice learned the hard way, don’t choose on cost or association alone; really kick the tyres on the provider’s performance. We signed up for the breakdown recovery offered by our insurers, Comfort, chosen for their good reputation. This proven to be a BIG mistake, their recovery partner took over 50 hours to recover us after a clutch failure at Berlin. It was one of the worst customer service experiences I’ve had. Put simply don’t ever think of using Call Assist. They lack the necessary organisational competency to provide the service they are offering. Just don’t!

A final thought, there is a world of difference between breakdown recovery providers and those providing breakdown insurance. The latter just want to minimise the cost.

Europe-wide accident and breakdown insurance is extraordinarily cheap if you add it to your Comfort insurance policy.

Been using that now for 9 years.
Great providing you don’t need to use them - see above.

That's interesting and totally different to my experience in France, they were out in about an hour and a half, unfortunately the recovery driver was quite young and inexperienced, but after couple of hours I was recovered to a Mercedes main dealer, they couldn't repair the van for a week so the recovery insurance team found me a hotel nearby and paid for all but one day of my stay, so the negatives were a young and inexperienced recovery driver and the French Mercedes main dealer not being able to do the job quickly (and being expensive). I don't know if Comfort have changed their provider or have a different one for Germany but my experience was acceptable.

See my post #21. Very pleased.

My partner is 84. No one keen to insure for more than 2 weeks abroad. Axa do health and breakdown insurance for the duration of your stay if you go through Tunnel. Just got back from France and it cost, for us both, £169 for up to 90 days.
That was for health and you just had to be fit to travel at time of insurance. Breakdown abroad was with Caravan Guard.
Unfortunately AXA are no longer providing health insurance to new customers.BUSBY

Mayday. £145. 2 x cars (as personal members) and the van as a named vehicle
Including health and travel??BUSBY

Correct me if I'm wrong, nationwide do not cover you if you go ill and cannot drive.
As I am the only driver if I had an accident or went ill they will not recover the van?

I thought that was if there was a second driver they wouldn't recover the vehicle. It could be you're better off with the nationwide as they provide both the breakdown and health insurance so there isn't a debate between them about which the claim is with.

They have changed provider to a French company Save, who were conspicuous by their absence in throughout the entire debacle. However, the Call Assist UK team did not know their a from their e and had no idea how to manage the situation. It took 24 hours, and many calls were made for them to collect the vehicle. We were then dumped on a garage forecourt in the middle of nowhere for over another 24 hours. It turned out that most of the delay was due to Call Assist trying to find a more cost-effective way to recover us.
