Breakdown Cover

We have cover with Mayday through the C&MC because they covered vehicles over 3500kg and it covers our cars too. However, before we went to Spain in December I checked their coverage and was told by them that they didn't offer EU cover. They suggested getting in touch with Red Pennant, who worked out really expensive.

Eventually I took cover out with Safeguard who were pretty reasonable, considering it was a stand alone policy. Didn't need to use it fortunately but at least it was in place if needed, albeit not a cost effective solution to having cover.

I've recently taken out moho insurance with Thinkinsurance and they offer UK/EU breakdown cover, so although I have duplicated cover at the moment, the safeguard expires in December and its not cost effective to have a stand alone policy when thinkinsurance offer the cover for £65. Its the same as Comfort insurance policy, using Aviva, but they were cheaper than Comfort.
Just had an insurance quote off Think insurance. Never took it as already sorted but wish I had rung them first. Really competitive and a pleasure to deal with and very quick response. Definitely my first call next time.

Thanks very much to everyone who have taken the time and effort to respond to my original post.

Having spent hours and hours on the internet and telephone, It looks like the only option is for me to change from my current insurer (LV via Devitt via CMHC) who I am happy with, to another insurer who includes breakdown assistance as an optional extra.

I cant believe there's no company out there that's offers "standalone breakdown assistance" for a 3850kgs, 7.4mtr Coach built. for either UK only or UK and Europe.

Did you try Brittania Rescue as mentioned on this thread? They will do it.

At the moment very few if any accounts seem to pay interest.......

Santander is still paying interest. 1.5% on amounts up to £20,000 plus up to 3% on bill payments. I know it still costs £5 a month but for us it's worthwhile and we've got nowhere near £20K in there.

Santander interest rate drops to 1% either this month or next

I'm sure NFU would cover you in those circumstances. After all they cover farm vehicles!

I tried them and they said no, that said i also tried Caravan Guard at the time and they said no. I've just done an online quote and it went through ok although a bit pricey

has anyone else used Caravan guard and their european/uk recovery

thanks Al

Maybe but at least it's still paying interest. I'll see how it affects how much we get back compared to the £5 charge and if it's not worth it then we'll change to the Lite account.

Al. I got a quote off of them this morning, very through, however very expensive. the breakdown assistance for UK was included standard as part of the premium, Europe was an optional extra at £44.

i’m with LV atm and my fully comp policy for my motorhome, value £85k with 1 additional driver is less than £300, i’m happy with the policy but they don’t cover over 8mtr vehicle for their breakdown recovery. luckily until Sept 2021 i’m covered with fiat assist so i’m ok for another year.

The Caravan Guard cover with breakdown/recovery was nearly £650 so i’ll have to weigh things up when I really need to, that or trade in for another new one ?

Hi Ken,
Hope you're keeping well?

Paul & Yana

Hi Paul and Yana,
Great to hear from you, and yes, I'm fine thanks, still in Beni under ultra strict lockdown conditions, should have returned to UK 5th April, but ferry cancelled so still here ha ha ha, but feel a hundred times safer here than would be in UK, due to the very strict control, it's now full summer weather up in the 30c + area !!!!!,
Hope that your both keeping safe and well and look forward to seeing you sometime soon (ish heehee ),
???. ???

Al, Many Thanks. I've just got a quote from LV, on a like for like basis but with the added benefit of UK and European breakdown assistance including repatriation of the vehicle if unable to be repaired abroad for a total of £417.01. The only restrictions are; 7.5tonne, 8mtr length and 180days limit for European breakdown cover. Its ironic, LV underwrite my current policy which is through the CMHC.

if I change insurance from CMHC to LV its another £71 for everything I currently have at the moment, but with breakdown cover added. Having tried 10 different companies I can't get standalone breakdown cover for anywhere near £71, the nearest was Britannia Rescue (who are part of LV) but they want £142.

So in summary. I can change insurers to LV and get what I originally started this FUN thread enquiry for, and pay an additional £71, or stay with my current insurer and take standalone at an extra £142.

What this little exercise has proved is; there's a lot to be said for being a creature of habit and sticking with what you know. I must have spent the best part of 12 hours trawling the interweb and on the phone, and potentially saved £71.

My neighbour, god bless him, does this very same exercise for everything he buys on line....

If it helps, I am using DriveGardian as a stand-alone breakdown policy for my MoHo. Covers UK plus 30 day or 90day EU cover, No size or weight restrictions and will do puncture if you don’t have a spare tyre. My 90 day cover was £84 this year.

Hi
With my vehicle insurance due in the next 2 weeks, on checking a few minor discrepancies in the policy wording with the broker, I've discovered that my current breakdown assistance through the RAC does not cover the MH.

Are there any recommendations for standalone breakdown assistance for a 3850kg, 7.4mtr coach built MH, either UK only or UK & Europe. I don't normally bother for Europe as breakdown cover is included with the personnel travel insurance.

Thanking you in anticipation.
Derry

PS. I have just got a quote from Comfort Insurance which includes UK & Europe breakdown cover as an optional extra at £65, however the premium was £107 more than my current insurer.
Have you tried CAMC, C&CC, Motorhome club for what they have to offer? Know that the CAMC do a deal with Green Flag also

Received an email today from Santander - rate drops to 0.6% from 3rd of August:(

Ian, Green Flag have a 3.5t and 7mtr limit.

Sorry Ian forgot your other points; CMHC do not offer European cover, other than through Red Pennant as part of travel insurance. CCC have an arraignment with RAC but cost an astronomical £330.

Hopefully this will be the last I bother you on the matter of Breakdown Cover and Insurance.

Have any fellow funsters had experience, good or bad, of LV Insurance. At £417.01 LV are coming in as the most competitive with UK and European breakdown cover included.

Breakdown includes roadside assistance and vehicle repatriation from Europe if unable to repair abroad. European cover is restricted to 180 days per year and UK is 365 days. No restriction of weight or length.

Without breakdown the insurance alone is £307.01, that compares to £423.66 from my current insurer CMHC. CMHC (Devitt) have loaded the premium by £77.35 for having Air Assist Suspension fitted. I explained to them that I had informed them when I had the air suspension fitted mid-way through the previous year and thought it would be included in the renewal quote of £346.31. They didnt seem to want to know.

So in summary; I can get the same cover of insurance along with UK and European breakdown for £6.65 less than CMHC insurance only. but would like to hear of fellow members expeiance before making the move.

Thanking you in anticipation.

hi Pete

can i just ask you or anyone

if you take EU breakdown/recovery cover say for 90 or 180 days, how would the insurance company know exactly how long you’d been over in the EU. Let’s just say you’d booked 180 day cover and you were over there 185/6/7 days and rang up for assistance, would they know that you were over 180 days or not and has anyone actually done this.

Al ?

I use green flag while in the UK and Red Pennant when I go abroad, I have had to use Both services and had a first class service on both occasions

Perhaps they would ask for ferry/train booking confirmations? I dont know, I'm just speculating?

Another vote for Nationwide Flexplus, even though they no longer pay interest. It is £126 per year for Travel Insurance (30 day limit, but can be extended), mobile phone insurance (replaced my iPhone in three days when I got it wet) and European breakdown cover for the Motorhome (up to 8 meters & 7.5 tons), and in our case two other cars. Very happy with it at the moment - we now use this as our main account, as we are so pleased with the general service, although I think you only need to put £500 per month through the account AFAIK.

@Whiskymac Is you MH over 3.5t.
Thanks Derry

Hi Pete. I assume your MH is 3500kgs. Just received a quote from DG £135 UK only, or £169 UK & EU

Hi Derry I have just changed my Motorhome to a 3.5 but when on the occasions I called them out it was a 4.0 Autotrail Savannah, I queried it on several occasions with Green Flag when I heard a few rumours about not accepting the size but was told no problems.
Hope that helps

Hi Whiskymac. Thanks very much for your swift response. I have just spoken to CMHC who told me that if I purchase Green Flag through them there are no limits to weight or length. cost £74 for standard cover or £105 for premium (both UK only) Incidentally the Green flag product when purchased via the CMHC is called Mayday. Purchasing the above is completely independent of taking vehicle insurance via CMHC.

What a palaver....
