I'm a newbie
Hi everyone.

Three weeks ago I put a deposit on a new Auto-Sleeper. Two and a half weeks ago I paid the remainder in full.

The dealership is still waiting for the DVLA to register the vehicle and so I am unable to collect it. Last week they had to resubmit the registration with a new reg number after the date turned August 1st. I still have no idea of when I'm actually going to be able to drive away the van I have paid lots of money for.

Is this normal? How long could I be waiting? Is there anything I or the dealership can do to speed up the process? It's all very frustrating.

Thanks.

It is my understanding that trade plates can only be used when an employee of the registered user of the plates is present in the vehicle whilst it is on the public highway.

The true manufacturing date of a vehicle can only be established from it's VIN and then from the manufacturer. However there is a model year code in the VIN which is the tenth digit from the left. Correct as of new vehicles manufactured worldwide since the very early 1980s.
Note 'Model year' not necessarily calendar year. In the case of VAG vehicles nominally 1st August of the preceeding year.

Interesting you say that they had to re submit a new reg no as it had now passed the Aug1st date. My understanding is once a reg has been submitted that's it. It sounds like the Dealer has dropped a clanger and is trying to persuade the DVLA to cancel the pre Aug1st application, which they won't.
Many years ago I remember a Customer came to collect a new upmarket car. They noticed a small dent in the passenger door that had not been there when they first chose the car in the Showroom. The Dealer offered to have it repaired to perfect. However, the Customer unhappy that in their mind the car would always be repaired, refused the car and demanded at best another perfect car. In the end as that could not be done, the deposit was returned and the deal cancelled. However, the Dealership now had an unsold but registered car on their hands. They tried everything with the DVLA including claiming to have registered the wrong vehicle by mistake, but to no avail. The DVLA would not budge, it had been registered and that was that, it had to be sold as a registered one owner car.

I suspect the dealer is telling porky pies and forgot to submit the first set of registration documents at the right time. It needs to be done several weeks before handover if they do not have access to the online system (and most don’t). I have never heard of them needing to resubmit registration documents with a new number just because the registration numbers have moved on on the 1st September. Has anyone else heard of this being needed?
I would jump up and down quite a lot and give them 48 hours before contacting the trading standards office. I'd also let them know that you are considering reporting a suspected fraud.
In the meantime I'd speak to your local police for advice and also get it collected on a truck and delivered to your home.
They have no Lien on your goods once you have paid in full!

I bought a new VW Amarok in 2017 and had a similar experience. This was due to the dealer pre-registering the vehicle as a demonstrator to get the extra kick back from the factory. Registration documents in my name arrived later.
