Hi. Does anyone have recent experience of getting some boxes of wine when approaching Calais from the south? Nothing special needed, just reasonable plonk. Have tried some older tips before, but not with great success. Thanks.

Sadly I think wherever you get it within 50 miles of Calais, you need to be extremely cautious of picking up unwanted human cargo. Last time we stopped at the Carrefour near Dunkirk and they were wandering round the van almost before we parked. I did not stop as nothing we were really desperate for. Went early to the tunnel and fortunately they let us in on that occasion. ( On another early arrival on a Sunday afternoon we queued to the check in only to be turned away. Drove back round to join the queue but by then had missed our train. 😠

I have always used the Auchan at Boulogne I'm preference to to Calais one that we used years ago
I do feel sorry for City Europe, they built it for us and now we can't use it safely.

The duty free at Calais port always does for cheap every day drinkers for me, if I’m there early enough. They do some very expensive wine as well! Yellow Tail Shiraz at £3 a bottle is always a bargain compared to around £7 at home.

If you can find a 'Stocks' on your travels, it's well worth popping in. They are like a catalogue returns shop or very nearly 'out of sell by date' tunn D and packet goods etc.
The big bonus though is that they pick up lots of end of line wines in either boxes or bottles.
If you're buying bottles there's an app you can use on your phone which tells you the price it should be and any reviews.

When we had the three statics, we would all buy a few bottles from Stocks, max price €5 and have a wine tasting evening or two .... Some of the €2 and €3 wines were actually really good, you just need to kiss a few frogs before you find a prince/princess of wines .... (Pun intended!!) 😁

We stayed overnight at the Auchan at Boulogne on Wednesday as we had an early train to catch. Huge well lit area, fuel station sells LPG & there's a motorhome service area (though we didn't need to use it). Lots of shops including the Auchan hypermarket. Frites & hot sandwich truck in the carpark - frites we're excellent - 3.30€ for a large portion. There were a few motorhomes stayed overnight including a couple of french. Didn't see any evidence of undesirables, bit noisy until early evening, but we felt safe enough. Would stay here again.

Try somewhere different, Google NOZ Abbeville. It's a store that sells end of line or closing down stock. I've picked up very good wines at very good prices. You never know what you are going to find from one day to another. Picked up some good beers too!
