Booking singles on the channel tunnel

If we don't know the exact return date - is it best to get two unrelated singles or is it cheaper to get a return with an unspecified date?

If you are ready to go 'now' it can be cheaper to pause somewhere with wifi and book the next crossing online, than it would be to carry on driving into the terminal and book in person!
