Hi guys on my my I have the Ducati black instrument panel and find it all most impossible to see if I'm driving on a bright day any tips on rectifying this problem I use my satnav as a speedo as I cannot see the vehicles one.
I know I'm getting on a bit but I still have 20 20 vision and I can't be the only one with this problem
Cheers

Got a HUD works great , need to use the reflective screen they provide when I am wearing sunglasses to see the display clearly in bright sunlight, doesn’t interfere with the view or distract for driving , works great . Can calibrate it with satnav if needed and changes easily to KPH when abroad.

I use one of these Demon Tweeks Speedo which works really well, picks up the satellite link very quickly on start up, easy to see in all conditions and easy switch from mph to kph. Not the cheapest but ‘proper job’.

Not a solution, but an aside: I have a clock with black pointers that disappeared when passing a dark part of the display. I painted the pointers white.

Have same issue, this post inspired me to download a HUD app from the Apple App Store. It can also operate in normal display mode too.
Will report back

Get yourself an HUD (heads up display) to fit on the dash behind the steering wheel - can get them powered either by the 12v socket or by OBD socket. Easily swapped from MPH to KPH
Bazza
That’s what we did to solve the problem 😎

The HUD function isn’t great as it’s too dim, but as a normal display it looks fine And much easier to read.

Yep, I have one like that (not the same model, but same concept)
It's difficult to understand how they can have built Ducato vans for so many years without noticing how bad the speedo is.

cheers,

Robin
Maybe they think Italian drivers pay no attention to it anyway... 😊

After I got back from a European tour in 2018-19 I had two speeding notices from France and one from Spain I had to pay!
The red numerals for KPH are more or less impossible to see, so I had previous Samsung galaxy S7 I installed a speedo app and the phone just sits between the steering wheel and Instruments, it partially covers the temperature but I can see the needle in the normal position and the fuel gauge I always fill up before the half mark anyway.
A previous car I had (Porsche 911 Turbo) had an exellent digital speedo and I always wanted the same for my van, solved it with this method KPH or MPH and I can immediatly see the innacuracy of the van speedo, the app always agrees spot on with any street side speed indicators.

I've got one of these. Clear display and doesn't need a GPS signal.

Hi Sasbo
what base vehicle do you use it on and which year?

Late 2019 Fiat Ducato 150 manual.

When connected for the first time an error message appeared, something along the lines of 'does not work with this vehicle'. Switched off ignition and restarted and it's been fine ever since and that's over 3 years use.

Sadly Lockwoods don’t do a set post 2014 for a 250 Fiat. I have fitted these to several vehicles, a quality item and easy to fit. Contacted them a while back, regarding earlier models, as I think they’re missing a trick here, but nothing happened. I’ve considered the HUD but my odb plug-in unit has worked well, and is as accurate as the sat nav, just easier to see and has other info plus code reader.

I have the satnav running most of the time as it shows speed limits as well as speed. I generally lock in cruise control so I don't have to keep looking at the speedo, much more relaxing I find.

Relocate the obd2 port and replace with a dummy. For extra fun lock the dummy.
For the op i also use an old android phone with digihud ap for a speedo.

It has been postulated that the reason that it is more difficult to read the speedo in a motohome ( than white van) is due to the change in viewing angle as a result of higher swivel seat.

My theory is that White Van Man in Italy has no need for a speedometer. Either that or the FIAT development test driver was nearly blind.

Luckily on the Series 8 'new' Ducato they have updated the speedo to a black background with illuminated (led) numbers and dial needles

Maybe because the average delivery van driver isn't bothered what speed he is doing?

Buy. Short strip of side lit leds so they do not shine in your eyes22 volt of course self adhesive and run a power cable off the auxiliary dashboard outlets , you may find they are too bright at night I certainly do but for day time workless s treati have mine on a plug in so can be pulled out for night driving

I bought a really old and cheap iPhone off eBay. £15 I think or less. Downloaded speedometer apps, found the best, clearest and easiest to read then mounted phone on holder on dash. Works a treat.
