Our 2007 Autocruise is belching black smoke from the exhaust when it start up and also when going up hills. We have tried some diesel additive before which seemed to improve matters for a short while. It has about 50k miles on the clock. Any suggestions please?

I used to be on oil tankers. We never knew who we were delivering to until in British waters Esso Shell or joe bloggs the difference is the additives or lack of, that is the only difference. Crude oil is just that
Yes, oil can be traded numerous times whilst on the water. It got complicated when parties would then also buy a part of the cargo, so we would report for say 5 clients with varying percentages of the cargo. It made calculations a little time consuming

If your vans done very little miles combined with lots of start ups, typical of many in the last 12 months it’s worth checking the engine oil for fuel dilution. With a cold engine pull the dipstick out and sniff the oil for diesel pollution, if the oil quickly runs off the stick that may be your problem, change the engine oil and filter.

We had the same problem as yourself and I tried the thrashing thing which seemed to cure it for a short time but it always returned . When they introduced the emissions test on MOt it would have failed so the garage that did my servicing got a diesel engineer in who diagnosed the injector pin in the turbo had seized and broken ,he recommended a new turbo but I was lucky as my garage liked to fix things rather than replace and they managed to remove the pin and make new one . I could not believe the difference in performance as I had just got used to the previous sluggishness.
