Bilbao Ferry Cancellation 27th January Some advice wanted

Watching the news with you Stewart:

Portsmouth to Santander / Santander to Portsmouth
Thursday 29/01 Santander to Portsmouth 17:30hrs (PONT AVEN) -
Poor weather and heavy seas are preventing the ship from leaving Santander today. We will not be able to set sail until 18:00hrs on Friday at the earliest and there is a chance it will take 36 hours to get to Portsmouth. The ship is available for use as a "floating hotel" .

Thanks for alerting us to the almost certain delay in Sunday morning's sailing ....we're going have a bumpy ride, whatever, looking at the shipping forecast!

Roxie if your planning on staying overnight in Portsmouth area some sites are really busy with the ferry delays etc we had a job finding one with hard standing

Thanks Stewart, but we're only about an hour from Portsmouth, so will head off from home. Just waiting to hear when! See you sometime soon ......looking forward to meeting you. Looks like we may have to rethink the stopovers once we get to Spain, to meet our site booking commitments!

We were just thinking the same re stopovers, we have booked Zaragoza but not Haro. Still intending to arrive at ferry with plenty of fuel in case it's a disembark and dash situation!

If anybody is stuck finding somewhere to wait for the weather to improve re their sailing we are about 45 mins from Portsmouth and can offer hard standing (our drive) and hook up ( a plug in the garage) (y)

The Bay of Biscay is never smooth even in good weather. And at this time of the year, with the winds expected as forecast.....................I would much rather drive down.

Add to the above,

ALL FERRIES OUT OF PLYMOUTH UP TO AND INCLUDING SUNDAY ARE CANCELLED.

PORTS AFFECTED ARE ROSCOFF AND ST.MALO

It just gets worse, our crossing to Santander on1st has been cancelled due to weather, the vessel is weather bound at Santander and not expected to sail for Portsmouth till evening of 1st and it may be a 36 hour crossing. No more availability till 11th Feb so have taken up offer of ferry to St Malo Sunday night 1st.

No maps no nowt for France, what route recommendations funsters? we have 2 sat nav's with European mapping so should be able to navigate our way around but what is best route to Valencia area.

Glad we've hooked up, and will be sharing at least some of the journey with you. We'll have a bevvy or two on Sunday night on the ferry, as we plan our respective routes!

Whilst they can't do anything about the weather in the Bay of Biscay, Brittany Ferries have been very helpful today in rescheduling our crossings - and giving us a very fair refund, and reimbursement of additional fuel costs.

I feel sorry for the poor folk who are in the floating hotel that is the Pont Aven, storm bound in Santander for at least two more nights, when they thought they were going to have been back in the UK by now.....

there's space on the drive and EHU available if you need an overnight stopover before getting the ferry. We're about 25 miles from the ferry port. You'd be very welcome. Have a great trip, enjoy! :roflmto:::bigsmile:

Thank you so much Pat, we managed to book onto Scotts Haven several days ago and are here now. You are a star.

Stewart, I'm sorry your first visit to France and Spain hasn't had the start you were expecting but hang in there it can only get better and once you are over there it's really easy driving on good roads, with towns that welcome motorhomes.

Good luck and keep up posted if you can, I'd love to follow your trip.

Pleased you got sorted out and as others have said it can only get better.
We are sailing Portsmouth - Santander in Feb and reading about the delays and cancellations starting to wish we had elected to drive through France.
Have a great trip and let us know what your stops were like in Zaragoza and Haro.

To anyone still reading this thread - we hooked up with Stewart at Portsmouth, and crossed to St Malo, arriving early yesterday. Having had an overnight stop near Bordeaux, and driven through snow today, we're both now on the Med coast just south of Narbonne at Cap Leucante. On to Vilanova Park tomorrow!
