BFG Tyres - Are they bigger than non AT tyres?

It’s only 2 wheel drive but wouldn’t put a mix of tyres.

I have them on my VW camper which doesn’t shake at 70. Does the extra ton of motorhome make a difference?

Also the stopping characteristics seem good on the VW.
They will help on the odd occasion you need a bit of traction on mud or snow, but for most people 98% of motorhome driving is on the road. So it makes sense to have a tyre that does it's stuff 98% of the time rather than 2.

Also on BFG's the compound definitley hardens up over miles and time and its then the wet weather performance can give you a squeaky bum now and again. As for road noise the BFG is much better than you would think when you look at the tread pattern.

If you've used them, then as long as you know to be careful in the wet they are pretty much bullet proof in every other regard.

Some of the comments on this Aussie site repeat the problem on wet tarmac.

Very interesting.

I can only think I a such an old fart that these issues haven’t manifested themselves on my little bus. Before making the final decision on the big one, I am going to ensure I get out in the rain on the BFGs in the VW and try and understand the concern.

Thanks all.

If you're looking for better wet weather, grass & mud grip with yet still good road performance then just use 4 season tyres. They'll out perform nearly everything in all conditions (except winter tyres on deeper snow). They look pretty much the same, only a very marginal noise increase although they will wear out more quickly.

Which ones would anyone recommend then?

They won a Promobil award end of last year:

Probably

On the Conti site it's these: just cross reference the part number to be sure
Looks like they don't do the Vanco FourSeason in 225/75/16 :(

Thanks

would the 205 be too narrow ?

I wouldn't know that; beyond my scope of knowledge.

Anyone else want to pitch in on the best solution?

I can go any lower than the current van height due to my driveway being on a slope.....

Thanks all
BigDean.

Checked on another site and it seems they do exist, that is Vanco 225/75/16 not sure why they don't show on the Conti site:unsure:

Remember that a lot of people who have an opinion on the BFG‘s will have never used them daily, and/or are just used to a vehicle does whatever they want without considering conditions.

I thought about getting them for mine but couldn’t get what I wanted so went for Goodyear instead.

Thats madness. How much business do big companies lose due to incorrect information on their websites? Frightening.

Thanks for that.

Anyone else have any opinion on this tyre?

Thanks

I have General Grabbers AT3s on my pickup. There doesn’t seem to be anymore road noise than any other vehicle I use. They’ve been on coming up for three years now and are not showing much sign of wear.

A lot of the AT’s and Mud tyres get noisy with age as they don’t wear the tread blocks evenly. This can be solved by regular rotation of the tyres around the vehicle.

I've run both Grabbers and BFG's on Defenders, and also had AT tyres on Discoveries, they are noisier by a long way it's just that the vehicles they are mainly fitted to are also noisier and that drowns out the extra noise. Fit a set on say a VW Golf and it would be pretty horrendous.

I think most BFGs are sold for the white lettering alone :D

are you suggesting vanity with the 4x4 beardy brigade  if so i used to qualify.

They are standard fit at that size on MORELO, Concorde, N+B in fact virtually everything on the Iveco daily 70C chassis.

The old one's got a bit old and slippy and I had a new set of BFGs fitted to my Lanny a couple of months ago. The fitter asked, white letters out or in? Out of course. '\

Here's one a moment ago.

My tyre place asks

”Yankee doodle dandy, or British bulldog”

To pick white in or out.

The white lettering alone was enough to stop me buying BFG tyres. I also got a better deal on the Grabbers.

White lettering shouldn’t have stopped you it is only only on one side of BFG’s so you choose when fitting to see it or not (y)

The grabbers were a much better deal at the time. The white writing is very American. I don’t mean that as a good thing.

Soooo,

As it was p'ing it down all day yesterday, I took out the VW on the BFGs and drove a little more aggressively that I normally do to see if I could feel anything. I have to say I felt very safe and secure. No problems whatsoever. Even the missus agreed!

I now know nothing........

First night away for a while just to check the recent warranty repair on the shower. Of course it’s been raining all day and we got to the farm we had booked to see grass only pitches. Slippy slidy everywhere on the existing Vanco Campers. Farmer came over and had a laugh. Told me to leave it where it was with front tyres on the “track”.

So, this makes me want to replace tyres ASAP.

I have read a million “reviews” that are mainly crap or biased.

I think the best options are
Michelin CrossClimate
Conti 4 seasons (not sure difference between regular and 2)

Has anyone had both so can give a balanced view?

Just want the best!

thanks.

You will get good mileage on the BFG's as the AT's will have about 25mm of tread, but as others have said the grip in the wet is not the best, Tried them on my Defender 110 and took them off as they were unpredictable when towing and very ass clenching in the wet. Not that it helps but swapped to Mickey Thomson's AT's which are a superb all round tyre on the Defender. As for the MoHo I'll stick to Michelin camper tyres, personal choice and all that.
