Beware BT Open Reach Scam

Further to my previous replies I checked an old email address last night (Ex TalkTalk) and found an email supposedly from TV Licensing telling me that there had been a problem with collecting my direct debit. It looked very official with my name and address etc and asking me to follow link. However the Licence number did not correspond with mine. I rang the hepline. As expected there was no problem with my payments and the licence number listed did not exist. Confirmed it was a scam.
I expect this is the result of being ex Talktalk and their data breaches.

I am genuinely not trying to be a smart ar@e gents, but we don't get any calls of a scamming nature on our landline, and haven't done for many years, and exceptionally few on the mobiles over the years.

Cheers,

Jock. :)
Don't worry Jock I will get them your number next time they ring me(y)

My understanding is that the sex line industry kept a log of all phone calls made to them and passed them on to the scammers.
I would nt be looking back through this thread to see who admitted to getting calls daily.(y)

For clarity, i didnt know these calls even existed :pinocchio:

Got one of those clever BT phones with call blocking built in a couple of years ago.
Not had a dodgy call since. (y):D

Richard.

Me to! It works really well. One of the best things I have ever bought.

Quite funny when they ring me to tell me my BT Internet has a fault....
You're damn right it does, I disconnected it over two years ago and got fibre internet and phone down the same cable.
Which incidentally has call blocking services, to which they get immediatly added

I rarely give out my landline number so was surprised to get a scam call yesterday. Showed up as international, heavy Indian accent insisting the renewal for a contract to stop nuisance calls was due ( pot, kettle came to mind) I strung him along but he kept insisting he needed my " contract number" from my bank card ---- account and sort code I got out of him eventually. He kept saying as a senior citizen there was no charge this was my contract number, obviously hoping confusing me would work. I kept repeating he must put this on an email to me at f.u.c........@ etc... Cut him off and the bast**** phoned back. Livened up a dull afternoon anyway.

I had the "Accident in which you were innocent" Automated call last week. I answered yes so got a human he went through his speil and I said "Thats right the one where I crashed in to a minibus and killed 8 folk, I was innocent of that" he hung up...

I don't get those anymore I kept telling them it wasn't an accident, I drove down the pavement on purpose but only managed to hit a few people. spoilsports won't play with me anymore

Likewise with the calls, always tell them to foook off in no uncertain terms,

As you ? Possibly worse though, I don’t pull punches, if I don’t know the number and I’m not expecting a call, I just tell them to f#*ck off, I’ve then got a blocker, press #2 and they are finished, I do have to be careful as I’ve only got room for another 926 blocks LMAO

One issue I have experienced is that (unless they have managed to get around it in more recent times) If like us, you have family in several parts of the world, Blocking calls, also blocks International calls. And as far as I am aware there is no way around it. You can "allow" UK numbers. But it does not (or did not) work with international Codes for some reason?.

The temptation to just block anything with "international" means we could miss an urgent call from family. For that reason we tend to put up with the "Crap" calls.

Try a CPR V5000, look in amazon £70.00, got ours a few years ago (£40.00 then) perfection from the minute it was plugged in, it handles the whole singular number, comes with 200 most frequent numbers already programmed in and you can add 1000 more, just by pressing #2 before you end the call, but you must have caller ID on your line, I’ve actually added another 86, I’ll have to be careful as I’ve only got 914 left LOL

It sounds OK, but reading some of the "Reviews". It would seem that in order to let Hospitals and Doctors etc through, THEY have to put 1471 in front of their number before they can speak to you? Not good in our situation as we get information regularly from both our surgery and the local hospital.

Sorry can’t help about the hospitals but our doctors (the wife’s and mine) AlLWAYS get through, no problem

Thanks for the info anyway. It is always worth investigating.

My Mrs gets these calls often while I'm at work. I've often wondered if on answering the phone and on deciding that it was a time waster/scam, if my wife just sat the phone down on the table and let them talk away until they realized that they were wasting their own time. With the phone lying on the table, is it true that the caller can't disconnect from you until YOU hang up, basically that means they can't make another call until you hang up possibly hours later?
Just a thought

The bottom line (as I tried to explain to my mother-in-sin yesterday - who's been caught out TWICE by these types of scammers) is that nobody legitimate ever needs you to install anything on your PC. Ever.

Teamviewer is actually a perfectly helpful piece of remote access software in the right hands, but you NEVER need to give a stranger access to your PC. If they're legit, they'll be able to change settings from their end.

For those of us a bit more tech savvy, if you have time to spare, we can help out other more naive users by keeping these scammers on the phone for as long as possible. You can play dumb, and keep them on hold for ages while you "answer the door", "let the dog out", "let the dog in", "crawl under the desk to check the cables", "answer the other phone", etc. Their level of anger when they finally realise that you're not as stupid as you seem is a measure of how effective you've been :D2

No, it's not true. The initiator of a call can always hang up. They just can't ring you again while your phone is off the hook. (And neither can anyone else, of course.)

Last scammer who rang me I told her to switch her phone to vibrate and insert where the sun don't shine. Tats all the satisfaction you will get from me! Strangely though I havee not had a call for the past 3 years. Do you think I up set them?

I always say, oh, I'm so lonely, can we talk about god, lol , there gone in seconds, it works every time and gives me a laugh
Just as long as the caller isn't a JW it could go down as the longest call ever:LOL:

I thought he was a seafaring officer on The Black Pig, under the rule of Captain Pugwash. ;)

Cheers,

Jock. ;)
and a friend of seaman stains

same here
Got rid of the landline so only on mobiles with a mifi on vodafone as can't get any other signal!
The only cold calls we get is for accident claims. Pity that search companies, repairers and insurance sell your information to these people.

One of the tellers in Nationwide always pretends she's the cleaner, one day this Indian guy rang up and when she said she was the cleaner and the lady of the house was not available , he swore in India and she swore back , she's of Indian origin ::bigsmile:
