We are in the same position, so far cheapest is AA, which we did on the phone, 90 days single trip quote is £700.81p for a couple, age 81 and 75.
Other quotes were well over £850

What is the 81p for? The stamp to send the certificate?

If you buy when booking with Eurotunnel, their travel insurance is very competitive, however we bought our tickets through Camping and Caravanning, the price of Eurotunnel through them was much cheaper but could not get the insurance with it. Eurotunnel will not sell their travel insurance separately.

Where are you going to?
Don't you feel there is any value in the EHIC card?

EHIC is fine for basic stuff but what if you were seriously ill and needed transporting home. What about all the other aspects of insurance. Theft, cancellation of holiday etc etc

Don't they treat serious illness on the reciprocal heath agreement.
We would treat anybody here -no matter how serious.
I thought they were only looking for health insurance.

Foreign countries covered by EHIC usually treat any illness I think but once you are able to travel you might need special care, an ambulance nurses etc to get you home and they don't cover that. Also, although I don't like to think about it, an undertaker and transport home might be needed. About 10 years ago someone I knew had to pay for his partner's repatriation after she died unexpectedly in Spain. He had to mortgage the house for £30,000 to get her back. Awful time for him.

If you are dead why do you want to come home?
If I had a pre-payment funeral plan I'd want to make use of it! :giggle: There are various reasons why people would want their remains transferred back to the UK, family, religion etc, personally if it happened to me I'd just want the easiest option for my hubby, probably cremation and then bring my ashes back or, preferably, scatter them somewhere nice abroad.

If seriously ill would you want to travel? Surely it would be better to use a company that let's you choose exactly what you want.
Not always a choice ... if it's going to be a permanent or a long term illness/disability you wouldn't be able to stay abroad indefinitely so would need to come back at some point. The treatment you'd receive abroad with the EHIC will only cover you for the immediate emergency, not on-going care, hence the need for proper travel insurance.

yes your correct if you have the ehic card then if you are an emergency patient most European country's will treat you ! And give you really good care ( as the bill is going to the uk ) some country's in the eu. I believe charge a percentage and you then have to reclaim that back when in the uk ( France being one ? Be it 20 years ago so now ? )

Yes they do but, it wont cover the cost of a medical flight home after serious illness a costly business as not suitable for normal plane and nurse escort. think private plane, nurse and doctor plus all the equipment needed, think selling our motorhome might just cover it.

I know know if I were to die abroad. I would want Kevin to get me cremated wherever it was. I would do the same for him. He has already told me where he wants his ashes scattered and it isn't in the UK.

You can hold a service and wake anytime adter to celebrate my life.

I suppose f you want 5* cover then you could have to spend £800 to cover all eventuality's.
I'd be happy to be took home by ambulance van or even my own van.
I also asked my wife if she would pay £30,000 to have my body repatriated to the UK - she laughed:roflmto:
It would be cheaper to fly the whole family to Spain for a funeral. Plus they would also get an holiday out off it after the wake.:drinks:

It's not 5* cover, it's just the normal cover for travel insurance to save the person needing to fork out what can be a massive amount for treatment and repatriation etc.

That's if you have a choice and whatever is wrong with you isn't serious enough for you to need medical equipment/staff support en route, I doubt it would be cheap though. You may also have to fork our for new return ferry/tunnel crossings as your existing ones may have expired or not be amendable.

Everyone seems to get 'hung up' on what happens if you die, that to some extend is the easiest thing to sort as you've indicated as doing the 'business' in the country you're in is the easiest way, it's if you DON'T die that the real issues come into play as they can't just pop you off because it's easier and cheaper ... although depending on how good your relationship is with your wife may not be so difficult for her to do!

I supposed throughout the years and a life time of traveling (both 73 now) we have always been willing to take our chanced, mostly because we have needed any extra insurance.
So it seems very unlikely to happen now.
You can imagine the worst possible scenarios but they are very unlikely to ever be that bad.
I wont spend my life worrying about maybes :drinks:

Forking out for ferry's is never an issue as long as you have credit cards ----- or family and friends with credit cards.

Carrying on with the worst case scenario. My dad once had to identify a body of a friend who'd died on holiday in Spain. He didn't think the body was his friend but had to make the decision quickly. The widow was in a terrible state and couldn't bring herself to do it. He decided that it wouldn't matter so he identified the body as his friend!
That decision bothered him for the next 40 years.
